Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates.

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

There are still openings for next Tuesday’s Men’s and Women’s Fun Day, August 11th.  Book online or call the pro shop, (413) 458-8355 with your 4 player names and requested tee time. Check out the games. Hope to see you all!

Coolers are not allowed at Waubeeka.  The ABCC requires all alcoholic beverages must be purchased from the Tavern on 7.  That’s the law!  Thanks for playing fair!

Good luck to the many juniors playing next Tuesday at Greenock CC in Lee!  You guys are going to have a blast!

Did you know that because there are no rakes in or near our bunkers, you are now allowed to take a lie? You must remain in the bunker within a club length, no closer to the hole…darn!

Join Waubeeka NOW!  Memberships have been reduced to ½ price from today until the end of the season!  Why join now?  Avoid paying the $2000 initiation fee next year!!  This fee waiver is good until Sept. 30, 2020!  Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, all new members will be assessed a $2,000 initiation fee.  Membership application can be found here.

Current members, do not forget:  You have an 18 hole cart or two 9 hole carts coming to you because we opened late this year due to COVID!!  This offer expires August 31.

PLAY GOLF + LIVE LONGER: Research presented to the American Stroke Association Conference in February, found that regular golfing (at least 2X month) can add years onto the lives of adults over the age of 65.  Out of nearly 5900 participants with an average age of 72, researchers found that the risk of strokes and heart attacks was halved among golfers!!

Check out our new COVID-19 Safety policy on our website!

Have you seen the new Nike ad here?

Boneheadz cited in the Berkshires!!  The Boneheadz spent the entire weekend at 3 area golf courses enjoying the beauty that Berkshire County venues have to offer.  They also spent money at restaurants, hotels and local watering holes!!  We love our guests and our guests love the Berkshires!!

Waubeeka friend Duncan Robinson scored 21 points for the Miami Heat Tuesday night as they beat the Boston Celtics for the first time in 3 tries this year!

Thank you MassGolf for including Waubeeka in a story about “A Route 2 Adventure” written by former WNEC baseball star and current staff member, Stephen Hanjack. Read the article here!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

The golf course is our home.  We work here every day and enjoy our work.  When you visit our home, we expect you to respect our home just as you respect your home.  Do you throw cigarette butts on your carpet?  Please do not throw cigarette butts on or fairways, greens, rough, parking lot or anywhere else on the property.  Put your butts in the cart, in your pocket or in your golf bag---not on our manicured golf course.   Same with candy wrappers and other trash.  We do our best to provide you with a great place to play, your help to have a great place to play will be appreciated!

Hurricane Isaias left a lot of debris around the course;  we picked up a lot of tree limbs and debris, and we emerged post storm in excellent condition!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Boombayah, Lunch & Golf!!  Choose a spot to enjoy a summer salad, a hearty ½ pound burger your way, or one of our different weekly flatbread choices along with your favorite cocktail in the shaded or sunny area after golf.  And even if you don’t golf, enjoy our spectacular facility to have a relaxing lunch or cocktail.   We think there is no better outside dining area anywhere!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

President’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy have seen all of the first round play start and end!!   In the First Lady’s bracket. Sandy Bourdon and Kay Goldstein will battle it out for the Title!!! The President’s Cup finds Tom Downey taking on Tom McGrath in the semis and Al Stalker will challenge long time friend Ken Hodgdon in the other semi final match!!

The Ladies’ Chip & Sip continues to be a hit!  Nineteen enthusiastic women took part this week. I’m not sure if it is my teaching prowess or the free adult beverage after class that has made this weekly event a huge success!!!

Private Lessons - Available by appointment, $60 for 45 minutes of instruction, a book of 5 lessons gets one additional lesson at no charge!  458-8355 for appointments.

14 year old Ben Dingman  had his first career hole-in-one last evening, and he did it playing with his dad, Mark.  How great is that!!!  Also in the group in addition to Mark Dingman was close friend Nick Petropulos!  Ben, an employee of the pro shop, hit a 9 iron on the par 3 132 yard 14th hole using a Callaway Diablo Tour ball!!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

The Richy Werenski watch is getting exciting. The Georgia Tech grad and Western Mass native won the recent Barracuda tourney, worth a $670.000.00 paycheck. It was his first PGA win and assures him of some great exemptions.  He can use the cash as he plans to marry later in the year.

Golfers must always be prepared for sudden thunderstorms and get to safety immediately.  I recall an incident during a North Adams Singles event where two players elected to wait out the storm under a tree.  After the delay, they were discovered lying under said tree with the metal spikes on their golf shoes MELTED!!!  Luckily  they avoided serious injury once they woke up.  Can any Beeks identify these two well known area golfers?

Area hoop fans of NASC will sadly remember Big Paul Abare who passed away recently. Paul was a teammate of mine for one season and I believe graduated in 72'.  Good player, great guy. I saw him at the Celebration of Life for Joe Zavattaro at the college recently.  Paul was an educator in his home town of Malden and also an assistant principal. He was involved in Missionary work in the Dominican Republic and made several trips there. His wife Mary (Brown) was also a NASC grad. Paul was 69 and was the father of two grown children.

From our safety department:

Check your smoke detectors, time goes by and you may have other things on your mind.  Taking my own advice I found the 10 year warranty on one of my units expired in 2008. One of the others had a battery in it that read "discard after  2002".  I was in the industrial safety business and conducted many safety meetings throughout my career and I found the two best pieces of advice that I stressed were:

1: Avoid complacency , no matter how experienced you are, take nothing for granted.

2: No fat guys on ladders !!!

Do you miss a couple of putts that you usually make and think you are having a bad day?You think Jason Tatum of the Celtics wanted to exit to the showers early during a recent loss to the Bucks119-112? He was 2-18 from the floor, 0-4 from 3 range and contributed 5 points!

I very often try to figure out the meaning of the lyrics of some songs , but I am stumped."I ain't changed but I know I'm not the same". Wallflowers , "One head light".  Humm??

PGA Tour

Justin Thomas captured the World Golf Championship FedEx St. Jude Invitational and also regained his spot as the #1 ranked player in the world!!  Also, in other PGA action for those not invited to play in the WGC FedEx St Jude, South Hadley’s Richy Werenski won his first ever PGA championship at the Old Greenwood Course on Tahoe Mountain, in the tour’s only modified Stableford scoring event!  Werenski is 28 years young!  Today marks the beginning of the season's first major, (it’s been over 1 year since we’ve seen a major), the PGA Championship being played at municipal course TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, home to former greats Ken Venturi and Johnny Miller.  Last year's winner Brooks Koepka will be out to win his 3rd PGA in a row!  Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory, Jordan Speith and JT will try to prevent that as well as our own Richy Werenski!!

LPGA Tour

Danielle Kang was crowned champion at the Drive On Championship played over the weekend at Inverness in Toledo, Ohio.   She credits her win from practice rounds she has been playing from the back tees with her brother, Alex Kang, who played on the Korn Ferry Tour and her boyfriend, Maverick McNealy, a rookie on the PGA Tour!  Change of scenery at the Marathon this week as we will see real fans throughout Highland Meadows, in Sylvania, Ohio!!

DEEP Thoughts

In a recent interview with GQ magazine, 26 year old PGA star Bryson DeChambeau revealed his goal is to live to be 130 or 140 years old.  Wasn’t that all of our goals when we were 26?  When you’re 36 or 46 the goal reduces to 100.  I think the goal for most of us now is tomorrow….one day at a time!  Every day is a gift.
