On Tuesday, August 11th, Waubeeka is hosting a FUN DAY.  Send in your 4 player names with an approximate tee time. Hope to see you all!  Click here for entry form!

I was happy to receive the inquiries we had about the AED machine.  It is encouraging to know that people really do care about others.  Hopefully we never have to use it, but it is very important to know how.

I spoke with PGA Pro Ryan Butterick of Greenock CC today and he says there are still openings left for the free junior tournament being held on Tuesday, August 11 at 9 AM. Call the Greenock Pro Shop at 413-243-3323.  This is a wonderful treat, we’ll get you a ride if needed!

Thank you, Steve Brown!!  Steve made Waubeeka 2 bat houses.  Not letting you know where they are, but bats are harmless, under appreciated gobblers of mosquito's.  One bat can consume 2000 mosquitoes per night.  Bats’ needs are simple: this house will act as a home to dozens of bats at a time.  The grooved backing provides a place for them to cling while roosting.  We undoubtedly won’t see them; they’ll do their job when we are enjoying our third dream.

Finally, since our golf course was not allowed to open April 15 due to Covid-19, we are extending to every member one free cart for any day you choose in the month of August.

Looking forward to the future, it is more than likely that membership fees will be increasing substantially for all NEW members, excluding juniors, who join in January.  To avoid the added cost of membership next year, we are offering new members the opportunity to join this year for half price.  It is a WIN/WIN situation.  Play our wonderful course for the remainder of the year and avoid a possible initiation fee for new members next year.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Generally, since COVID-19, we have doubled the cart usage and created double the wear and tear on the turf.  This has caused us to see a negative impact on the turf.  For this reason, please, stay on cart paths as much as possible, use the 90 degree rule to cross the fairway to get to your ball, and try to repair an extra ball mark when you get to the green.  I am proud of our country club conditions at a public golf course. I ask that you show that same pride on the fairways, greens and especially when disposing of trash, cigarette filters and other debris.  We are not allowed to put trash cans, ball washers and rakes on the course, so every good deed you do goes a long way in maintaining the condition of the golf course you have come to expect!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Friday Night Special - Prime Rib, cooked to your liking, with fresh vegetable and baked potato.  End cuts are available.  Please call 458-6000 for reservation, end cut or rare cut!  We only have a few ribs left, and we are certain to sell out.  Please call early!!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

Remember to sign up for the Member/Member Tournament  this Sunday. I can take reservations up to (tomorrow) Friday at 5 PM. This will still allow me some lead time to do up a proper scoreboard and have team scorecards ready. Please let me know if you plan to participate!! Teams may be male/male, lady/lady, man/lady.  We will pay winners in every division based on entries.

The final Waubeeka Golf Camp will be held this coming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday August 4, 5 and 6 from 9 AM until 3 PM.  There is one only opening available.  Call the pro shop now, 458-8355,  if you were shut out of one of the other camps!

Matches have started in the President’s Cup and so far, Tom Downey, Al Stalker and Ken Hodgdon have won their first round matches. The First Lady’s Trophy matches begin tomorrow!!

Week Three of the Ladies’ Chip & Sip has passed by! Another group of women were introduced to the pitch shot and the start of a full golf swing which is what is on slate for this coming week. A $20 weekly fee covers all of the instruction and an adult beverage following the clinic. Again, what a great way to introduce a daughter, wife, girlfriend or mom to the game of golf!!

Sunday Sweeps - Gross portion played out with Chris Bourdon claiming first, Russ Gilman took home second and Todd Shafer and Jamie Gaffey tied for third. The Net side of things went to Dave Rickert in first, Chuck Lewitt in second and third place was tied between Ron Goss and Fred Scully.

It just came to my attention...Congratulations to Fran Fachetti who made a hole-in-one on Wednesday, July 15th.  His ace came on Hole #7. It was his 2nd career hole-in-one. His witnesses were longtime friends, John Lanoue, Ron Ferris and Coach Larry Dufresne.

Yesterday, we had a gentleman here from Albany, NY, first time seeing the course and he had a hole-in-one on the par 3 14th hole!!  Oh, it was his first hole-in-one ever and he’s 74 years old!  AND... it was his birthday!!  What a gift... his son, a reporter for USA Today, witnessed it!  Happy, happy Birthday!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

Western Mass native Richy Werenski had a great week at the 3M stop on the PGA tour. He birdied the final hole to finish T-3 and cash for $250,800.00 . He had rounds of 63-67-68-70.  His bird on the last hole increased his payday by $127,000.00.

                                                   ********

In the "It is never too late for us" department, my late father-in-law made 13 holes-in-one in his golf career.  I will add that he did not start playing golf until he was 50 years old.  Joseph H. Piretti carded all those aces at the Cranwell Resort (Now Wynhurst Golf and Resort).

Former Head PGA professional John Wells confirmed Joe's accomplishments, "Joe was a great player, he had 5 aces on the 12th hole (Formerly Hole #3) alone. I witnessed many of them.”

If any Waubeeka members play in any outside tournaments and post scores that they are proud of, send it along and we will get it in the Newsletter.

                                            *************

As a starter at Cranwell for 10 years I had some strange dealings with golfers; in other words, I saw it all.

The best one, by far, was the Saturday morning, in the very busy summer prime time, when my radio alerted me that the 10:10 tee time would need rental sets. When they reached the 1st tee I asked, “Right or left handed?” The two men said, “right handed please” and one of the ladies answered, "I don't know.”  Lady #2 had an answer a little bit more encouraging when she responded, "I'm not sure.”

After I got them semi-squared away one of the ladies pointed to the gold and black tee markers and asked, "What are those things for?”

It was confirmed that this foursome had never held a golf club in their hands and, for sure, were never within a furlong of a golf course.

After convincing this group that they should all play the white tees, off they went.  The first 10 swings were whiffs and then a ball was hit sideways, about 6'.  At this point I'm checking out the 10:20, 10:30 and 10:40 tee time folks and about to give them directions to Greenock CC.

I later found out that my group dropped over $ 800.00 in the shop on green fees, rentals and  golf supplies.  Am I supposed to suggest they consider heading to the tennis courts or pool area and lose the $800.00?

Maybe later in the season I'll continue with "The rest of the story…."

PGA Tour

7 years playing on the PGA Tour without a victory might influence someone else to find a new job - not Michael Thompson!  Perseverance and determination got Thompson his first win since the Honda Classic in 2013 at The 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, Minnesota.  The veteran had to birdie 2 of his last 3 holes and more importantly a 2 year exemption and a spot in today’s WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational, being played at TPC Southwind in Memphis Tennessee.  No fans and no Tiger will be there!  South Hadley’s Richy Werenski, after leading the second and third rounds of the 3M Open, shot a 70, good enough for a 9-way tie for third place!!  Richy was wearing a ‘Blue Lives Matter’ wristband all weekend, the same one he has worn for 4 years supporting his family in law enforcement!

LPGA Tour

Inverness will host the Drive On Championship tomorrow in Toledo, Ohio. No fans or sponsors this week will be allowed at the famed Inverness, but expect both next week at Highland Meadows, also in the Toledo area!!

DEEP Thoughts

PLAYING GOLF…..the SAVING GRACE for many of us during this pandemic.  Follow the rules and continue to be safe.
