It's A Beautiful Day at Waubeeka - OUR THURSDAY NEWSLETTER

Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates..

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

On Tuesday, August 11th, Waubeeka is hosting a FUN DAY of social golf.  This is NOT a tournament; just a day to get together with friends and family (men and women) at the discounted price of $240 per foursome, which includes 18 holes, cart and use of the range.  Bring a 4some for this special rate and book your own tee time.  Hopefully we can renew old friendships and enjoy the splendor of golf in the Berkshires! We, of course, will practice social distancing and other protocols for a safe day.  AND….DON’T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE A FEW SPECIAL CONTESTS OUT ON THE COURSE.  I’m looking to fill the tee sheet and I think we can!

Do you know where the Automated External Defibrillator is located?  That may be the most important piece of information to know when you are at Waubeeka Golf Links.  The AED machine is located near the beer cooler
in the clubhouse.
Do you discuss with your foursome, if a medical emergency arises, how you will proceed?  Many lives have been saved on a golf course, simply because every person knew what to do in an emergency.  Let’s review:

  1. Call 911 or 458-5080.
  2. Stay calm, call 458-6000 (restaurant) or 458-8355 (pro shop), ask them to send out the AED machine.
  3. Have someone meet the ambulance so they can get to the injured person ASAP.

The 2020 Pudge Fisk Frappe Cup Open (Players Taconic Open- 31 consecutive years) was held at Waubeeka and Taconic GC this past weekend!  Talk about a group of guys knowing how to have fun--WOW. All matches had to do with former Red Sox stars, i.e. the namesake trophy (Pesky, Dewey, Wakefield, Mirabelli)!  On hole 9, every player had to throw their ball over the pond from where their drive landed!!  Not sure how many made it over - they’re not spring chickens!! The purpose of the event was golf, food, drink, to enjoy Williamstown, appreciate all they have worked for and to forge great friendships!  There is a lesson there for each of us!!!

Kudos to Bette Craig and the members of SWCA for their efforts in cleaning up one small section of the Green River last Saturday.  What a better place we would all enjoy if everyone did their share to NOT litter!

Casey Conry wrote to us Monday night about the Waubeeka bees!  They should harvest some honey before the goldenrod!!  Casey generously will give any member a small jar at no charge!

There are still a few openings at Greenock CC for that great junior tournament coming Tuesday, August 11 at 9 AM. Every participant will be provided with a complimentary lunch. Call the Greenock Pro Shop at 413-243-3323; we will make sure you have transportation!  Thank you Dr. and Mrs. Sukumaran for promoting junior golf.

Hard to figure:  Miraval Hyatt spent $132 million in Lenox and Mike Deep can’t find $30 million to invest in Williamstown?

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

This was an extremely hot tedious work week for myself and our staff.  We spent considerable time picking up brush, cleaning up a lot of our overgrown areas, slicing over 50% of the greens and unfortunately, repairing many of our golf carts!  What COVID-19 has done is double our cart usage, which naturally doubles the repairs necessary, the batteries needed, alternators replaced and stealing parts from Peter to pay Paul!  I guess that’s what makes Waubeeka such a great golf course for myself and our crew; we never really know what to expect next!   Hopefully, we can go back on our mowing schedule for Monday morning, beginning with the range, which hasn’t been picked in 2 weeks because our range picking machine died!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Thanks for the feedback on our summer salad with dressing!  Most of you have enjoyed blackened salmon over the top!   Lots of fun cooking for our Golf School.  Who says you can’t have dessert unless you finish your meal?

Week two of the Ladies Chip & Sip has passed by!!! Another large group of women took in the basics of chipping and pitching this week!!! A $20 weekly fee covers all of the instruction and an adult beverage following the clinic.  And...never fear if you can’t attend; you may participate in as many of the clinics that you wish to!!!

My third junior golf camp finished up today!!! Another great group of kids learned the fundamentals of golf, grip, stance, posture, the swing and then a mini tournament to finish it up!! A big improvement was noticed by many!!! Onto a lifetime journey on the links!!

The annual Member/Member Tournament will be played next Sunday, August 2.  Deadline for signups will be this Sunday,July 26 at 5 PM, if you want to play.  Teams may be male/male, lady/lady, man/lady.  We will pay winners in every division based on entries.

Pandemic "activities" etc, etc, etc.

Let’s start with cleaning the basement after an early exit from Bonita Springs in late March:

* Where did all the golf balls and golf clubs come from?

* Do I really need 19 screwdrivers, even though I possess an electric and portable screw gun with multiple bits?

* Who needs more than maybe two tape measures; I discovered that I have 14.

* Tape you say ? I have red tape, green tape, duct tape, masking tape, electricians and scotch tape. Tape dispensers? You don't want to know.

Let’s check out what I have on my office reminder board:

* A $38.00 gift certificate (#154) for Fran Esposito's Golf Shop at North Adams Country Club for winning the 3rd Division in some event.

* A few NACC cards, good for one round of golf (9 or 18 holes)  to be used by October 31, 19_____.

* A copy of a 2012 column of mine that appeared  in The Berkshire Beacon which included my humble opinion on Augusta National. "I'm all for progress and equality, but I would love to see Darla Moore and Condoleeza Rice tell Billy Payne what he can do with his stupid green jacket.  Maybe Hootie Johnson can be there to introduce Martha Burk as a new hostess". You can look it up.

* Saratoga Race Course had just completed their meet and I reminded my readership that "Since 2005 over $10 million of winning NYRA sold tickets went uncashed. In 2005 the total was $1.7 million alone". The State of NY thanks all of the fools who either lost their tickets or forgot to claim their winnings. One year my German Shepherd chewed up an $ 87.00 winning Double ticket. He was grounded for the summer.

                                                      A List of Lists

* A list with the 63 Western Mass Golf Courses with phone numbers w/ check marks of the ones that I have played.  How many "Beek" members could check off, or locate, the following gems? Dunroamin CC (Gilbertville), Hilltop GL ( Goshen), Mill Valley ( Belchertown), Scottish Meadows GC (Warren),  Thomas Memorial of Turners Falls and the course with the "lollipop" trees lining the fairways on Route 5 in Greenfield, The Meadows.

Unfortunately , like members of the Lawrence Welk band, some of these golf venues are no longer with us.

One course that was not listed  because there are now houses on the property was the old Wimpernon Links on Route 20 in Russell or Westfield, and yes, I found it and played it.

For the casual horse racing fan, how about this quiz.

What do you do with a horse that was 0-18 in his racing career ?

Trainer Sean Mcdermott  took control of Snap Decision and gave the horse a try at jumping over fences. The now 6-year-old gelding has had a record of 5 wins and two runner up finishes including a 38 length win at the Spa last year. On Wednesday he was entered in the first race at Saratoga. Since the surface switch he has banked $387,000.

Check the results on Newsletter Thursday.  I hope the rain doesn't wash the race off the card.

Next project for me ....the attic. I hope I find some 1956 Mickey Mantle cards up there.

PGA Tour

Spain’s Jon Rahm moved to the World’s #1 ranking after all was said and done! The Memorial and Rahm, absent fans, but, including milkshakes for all, had a bizarre finish!!  First Rahm was unknowingly assessed a 2 stroke penalty because his ball moved on a chip shot just off the 16th green!  Next, he ended up carding a 75, still winning by 3 shots over playing partner Ryan Palmer!  Finally, 80 year old Jack Nicklaus shook hands and congratulated Rahm for his win on the slick greens at Muirfield Village!  It was revealed earlier in the day that the Golden Bear and his wife Barbara both tested positive for Covid-19, but recovered nicely.  “Our hearts go out to the people who did lose their lives and their families.  We were just a couple of the lucky ones, so we feel very strong about working with those who are taking care of those who have COVID-19.”  Today marks day one of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, Minnesota.

DEEP Thoughts

Support your golf club!!  Last week we wrote that 3 college courses were in danger of never again opening.  Supporting your club means supporting your entire club, in the same manner your club supports you.  If you appreciate the condition of your golf course, let those workers know you appreciate their hard work.  A simple wave or a thumbs up goes a long way!  Are you happy with the service your pro gives you?  Does he grip your clubs in a timely manner, does he get you a tee time when we are full, does he offer advice to make you better - if so, buy your clubs, shoes, balls or tees from him-- he will appreciate your support.  When your round is finished, do you sit and enjoy a beer or lunch from our restaurant.  The waitstaff and the chefs appreciate your support.  Your support recognizes the long hours they work to make you happy!  Stay an extra ½ hour and enjoy a fine meal - we appreciate your support and your friendship!  Make a reservation for your family for a night out, Chef will prepare your favorite dish!  Most of all, visit your club and visit it often!  It’s your lifestyle!
