It's a Beautiful Day at WAUBEEKA - OUR THURSDAY NEWSLETTER

Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates.

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

ATTENTION ALL JUNIORS:  Through the generous underwriting of Dr. & Mrs. Sukumaran, Greenock Country Club in Lee will host a free golf tournament on Tuesday, August 11!!   There are 3 divisions, ages 8 - 11 will play a 9 hole tournament, ages 12 - 15 and 16 - 18 will play 18 holes.  Juniors are competing for a scholarship and pro shop merchandise.  I encourage all our golf school participants to enter as well as our Sunday afternoon clinic attendees.  Ask me, Erik or Mike if a ride is needed to Greenock on Tuesday, August 11 for a 9 AM shotgun start.    Every participant will be provided with a complimentary lunch.  Call the Greenock Pro Shop at 413-243-3323 and sign up NOW!  The field is limited to the first 72 juniors who make the call.

We have decided to revert back to 10 minute tee times effective tomorrow, Friday, July 17.  All tournaments or outings will now be allowed to book shotgun starts!

So happy with our Suggestion Box. We have received many great ideas!  Keep ‘em coming!

We have 2 takers for advertising spots on our GPS system.  Only 16 spots left!

The lines in the parking lot look great.  Kyle McEwen from Lanesboro, Precision Striping, (413) 271-2825 did a great job!  I recommend him highly if you need your parking lot painted or lined!

Thanks, Duffy!!  Maybe the biggest winner of all in this weekend’s Member/Guest was Duffy Judge, guest of member Nick Petropulos! Duffy has too many golf shoes, so he donated his tee gift to one of the junior golfers here!  That’s what golf is all about!

Best thing about our Junior Golf camp….(well maybe not the best thing….after all, they enjoy the intense and informative instruction), but we sure do get compliments on the food and desserts they are given throughout the day.  I visited last Tuesday and saw the homemade sundaes.  Got there a little too late as they were devoured in minutes!

Congratulations to Jake Benzinger, the former MGRHS athlete and Wake Forest Football Offensive Lineman.  Jake has signed a deal with the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL!!  His dad, John tells us he is now in Atlanta, GA working with elite trainer Chip Smith.  He will report to the Cardinals on July 21 and hopes to make the first cut.  All his friends here are rooting for Jake and wish him the very best!!  Speaking of football, the Patriots will have 20% fans in the stands this season, the Philadelphia Eagles will not! Not sure about the Cardinals.

How about Jeff Pulari shooting a 62 Sunday at Berkshire Hills?  10 birdies and 0 bogeys!!  Congrats!

Meeting room? - Need a place to hold your small board meeting or plan a large event?  Our sun room is available for your group to hold a meeting for absolutely no charge!  Please call the ‘Tavern on 7’, 458-6000 and reserve a date!!  Our compliments! OH, you won’t find a prettier setting!

Finally, I have heard that a Massachusetts company has developed a vaccine to fight COVID-19.  Praying it happens soon!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Thank you to those who read last week’s newsletter.  There are less ball marks on the green, and they have been repaired correctly!!  Thanks to my staff as they worked extra hard getting the course in tip top shape for last week’s Member/Guest tournament.  I hope you noticed all around the pond exteriors!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The Member/Guest this year went off without a hitch.  Calling for a deluge of rain, things didn’t look promising for day one!!! A ¼ of an inch later, things went forward as scheduled.  What a GREAT weekend!!  Also, the ‘hit from any tee you want to’ rule made it a very enjoyable weekend for all!

Congratulations to Todd Shafer and Geoff Tatro on winning the Championship Division. They fired rounds of 69-70-139. Second went to Chris Bourdon and Uncle John Bourdon 69-75-144. Third was claimed by Nick Petropolus and Duffy Judge 73-72 -145.

The First Division was a hard fought battle on both the Gross and Net sides of the ball!! Emerging as victors on the Gross portion was Dan Gliwski and Will Cropper 78-74-152.  The Net side saw a tie develop between the teams of Chuck Lewitt and Larry Beach and Ken Hodgdon and Steve Brown. Both teams shot identical rounds of 64-61-125. While going through all methods of tie breakers the tie could not be broken. Both teams decided not to have a playoff and were declared co-champs!!

The Second Division was a battle down to the end resulting with John Vareschi and his partner Jamie Zdon winning 80-81-161. The Net portion saw Chris Ware and Tom Leveque run away from the rest of the field with consecutive rounds of 64-64-128. Second net was claimed by the team of Gary Urkevich and Dan Urkevich with 70-66-136.

President’s Cup qualifying is this week!!! Please make sure to declare your round before you tee off to post your qualifying score. We will make up the pairings on Sunday so that play can begin on Monday!!

Rules for Ryder Cup are as follows: Day 1 is a 9 hole two person scramble match play and a 9 hole scotch match play, while Day 2 will feature an 18 hole better ball match play. All players that sign up will be split into two teams, Team Deep and Team Tiele. We will then play matches as they do in the Ryder Cup!!!

The Chip & Sip saw 17 ladies take part~our largest turnout ever! We had one hour of instruction covering the basics of proper grip, set up and then we worked on some putting drills. We saw  a lot of improvement over the session.  Afterwards, we shared cocktails  and laughs!! Looking forward to next Monday already!!!

My third junior golf camp of the season will begin next Tuesday with 9 enthusiastic campers ready to go!!! What a summer it has been for the kids!!

Fantasy Golf Standings will get posted after this weekend. I had to write a new program after changing computers in the golf shop. Of course the new computer didn’t like my older program version!!!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

The word around Berkshire County golf circles is that Jeff Puleri went low at Berkshire Hills over the weekend. I believe shooting a 62 is considered going low.  Next time someone at The Beek is looking for a partner for a member/guest maybe they should consider giving Jeff a call.  One year I remember asking Jeff how his team did in the MCLA Sports Fundraiser Scramble at the Hills and their team had all 3s on the back nine. That was good enough for the win. He is quite a player.

* South Hadley's Richy Werenski cashed another PGA check last week at Muirfield. His 5 under finish earned him $31,542 for his efforts.

Celebrity sighting at the Cranwell range. Andy Congdon of Great Barrington has stopped by a few times and he can still stripe it. He has won the Club Championship at Wyantenuck 25 times and was the Mass Golf Senior Player of the Year in 2011.

So, if Puleri's line is busy, maybe you could try Mr Congdon? The secret to winning M-G events is having the right phone numbers.

This week's surprise quiz, good luck:

#1: It is 9:00 AM and there are 10 cars in the parking lot at any golf course in America.  Which car belongs to the PGA professional on duty?

#2: You enter a Golf Shop and there are 7 people in the shop on a rainy day. How can you identify the assistant pro?

#3: You are unloading your clubs in the parking lot and 6 golf carts pass by you, each carrying the driver only. Which one is being operated by the assistant pro?

Answers :

#1 If you said it is the one parked in the slot with a sign that reads “Reserved for golf professional", nice try but you are wrong. It is the one with 5 shirts, 3 vests and 2 jackets on hangers and assorted hats on the back seat.

#2 It is not necessarily the person behind the counter, again sorry. It is a gentleman with his sunglasses on upside down on top of his hat, even though the sun has no chance of coming out for the next 5 days.

# 3 This is an easy one. If you said "It is the guy with sunglasses on top of his hat", you get partial credit. For full credit you had to add that his left foot is dangling dangerously 1" from the pavement as he drives by.      ***************

* Speaking of Ass't pros, back in the early 80s there were two young assistants at Oak Ridge who could bounce a golf ball off their wedge forever.  As I recall, neither ever broke 80 on the course.

* The best assistant pro of all time, without a doubt, was my good friend John Demko of Crumpin Fox.  Always in a great mood and he was popular with the entire membership for years.  He was also quite a player. He was a master of an impressive and colorful leaderboard at all club events.  He left the business and has had a career as a correctional officer in Hampshire County.  His impressions of many members' voices and mannerisms were always a must see and listen.

* For the horse racing fans out there, here is a shocker. Chad Brown was the leading trainer at the recently concluded Belmont meet and Irad Ortiz Jr led the jockey standings.  Who would have thunk it ???

Here is a bold prediction, ditto for the upcoming Saratoga meet.

PGA Tour

The Workday Charity Open featured 23 year old Collin Morikawa sipping the traditional Muirfield Milkshake after he posted the win on playoff Hole #3 last Sunday over World #1 Justin Thomas! Today, at the very same golf course, it's the start of the Memorial, absent fans, but, including milkshakes for all!!  First time that a PGA event has been held at the same venue 2 times in succession in 63 years!!  Last week the green speeds were 11½, this week they are going to 13.  Superintendent Chad Mark may be looking for employment soon if the greens at Muirfield die this week!!

Tiger’s back today, he’ll tee it up with Rory and Brooks Koepka.

DEEP Thoughts

Metacomet GC, former home course of the former Brown golf teams, is partly owned by PGA Pro Brad Faxon.  Metacomet is currently mired in a sale and may never again open.  Yale, the #1 college course in America, has not opened in 2020.   Dartmouth has made its golf teams club sports.  Their home course, Hanover CC, will close!  Isn’t it time for the PGA Tour, the USGA, the NCAA, the NGCOA, and giants like Titleist, TaylorMade and others to commit to this sport!  What about the 50 individual state associations?  At the very least they should discuss how this tide can be stemmed?  Isn’t it horrible for a sport that can be played your entire life, to be reduced to those who can travel, afford huge fees, and aren’t young?  We, all of us collectively, must encourage greater participation in this great game, and do all we can to get colleges back into golf and support our high school programs--before it's too late!
