June 4th, our Members Appreciation Night has been postponed. This is an evening when owner Mike Deep and the entire Waubeeka staff show our members just how much they are appreciated. It’s a night to celebrate. We will do it; be patient. (no pun intended).
The smartest people I know are those who live in downtown Boston and DO NOT OWN CARS! Traveling there has led to many conversations between the GPS in my car and myself. Some of them go this way:
GPS: “Turn left at the next intersection.”
Me: “I did!”
GPS: “That’s a parking lot!”
Or how about this one:
GPS: “Make a slight right turn.”
Me: “There’s two slight right turns. I took the wrong one, didn’t I?”
GPS: “Your ETA is now 30 minutes, not 5!”
When it comes to driving, give me the good ol’ Berkshires any day!
Congratulations to former Williams College standout, Sam Goldenring and Pittsfield PGA pro, Eric Mabee for their outstanding performance in the US Open Qualifier recently held at Taconic. Sam’s 71 earned him medalist honors and Eric’s fifth position allow them to advance to qualifying for the prestigious tournament. We wish them continued luck!
The 104th edition of the PGA Tour’s second major of the 2022 golf season will take place today; however this version is deep rooted in controversy. Defending Champion Phil Mickelson, Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and at least 15 other tour players will be missing from Southern Hills at the 86 year old Tulsa Oklahoma Course........Why aren’t they participating?
There are 2 new startup Golf Tours in town called the LIV Tour, funded with money from Saudi Arabia, the country that murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi 4 years ago and committed numerous other human rights violations. There is also another league which we shall refer to as Super Golf League.
So now the PGA Tour has become a base for politics! Last week in Mexico, at the prestigious resort stop, Puerto Vallarta, 3 journalists were killed. No mention by Commissioner Jay Monahan!
Send me an email, YES OR NO; do you think the Tour has the right to ban independent contractors Sergio, Phil, Westwood and others? We’ll have more on this in the next newsletter and will share your opinions.
The Oklahoma Sooners finished first in the last Coaches Golf Poll in the country in Division 1. The National Championship will be played May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk GC in Scottsdale, AZ. I remember playing Grayhawk a few years back when Phil was a member there. The banner across the entrance praised him for his latest victory…I don’t recall which one. It was a spectacular course.
Book your tee time around 2 PM Saturday, preorder a couple of rib eye steaks and enjoy the 147th running of the Preakness at Pimlico, leg two of the Triple Crown. Since 80-1 longshot Rich Strike won’t be in Baltimore, Epicenter, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, runner-up at the Kentucky Derby, will be the 6-5 favorite for the 7 PM start.
Marcus Smart (injured foot) and Al Holford (Covid protocol) could not play in the Celtics Eastern Conference Final opener, losing 118-107 to the Miami Heat. Game 2 is tonight at 8:30 PM. Go, Celtics!
Today’s Farmer's Almanac says today is a great day to prune trees! Rain….you need to go away!

Congratulations to Paul Roeder for completion of his second year at MCLA college in North Adams. Paul finished his last semester with a 3.95 GPA.
With spring finally here we are fertilizing tees and approaches this week.
We are down one of our three rough mowers. It's going to be two or three weeks until Toro can come and troubleshoot our machine. We are going to try and keep up with the rough which is growing by leaps and bounds with the spectacular weather we are experiencing.

When it rains it pours in a good way…our second ace in four days..Congratulations to Bob Desanty who made a hole-in-one on Saturday, May 14th on the 171 yard 7th hole! He used a 5 hybrid. His playing partners were Chris Ware, Al Field and Russ Gilman. This is Bob’s third ace of his career, a nice way to start the season.

In case you missed it, the 2022 edition of the Kentucky Derby was held two weeks ago. All the experts were dead wrong and very few even mentioned the eventual winner, Rich Strike.
The mutual payout was $163.60 to win, 74.20 to place and 29.40 to show.
The $1.00 21-3 exacta paid $1,364.00
The Trifecta 21-3-10 returned $7,435.00
If you happened to live on 2131013 Main Street and played your address in the superfecta for a dollar, you got $321,500.00 back.
“How could anyone bet that horse?” was heard all over the track after the results were posted.
Well, there was a $501,000 bet on Rich Strike to win.
If a bunch of elderly ladies pooled their money and bet $5.00 to win on every horse in the race, they got back $407.50 for their $100.00 investment to parley on the next Bingo Night. Yes, this did happen.
Good luck in the Preakness Stakes this Saturday.

Let's flashback to the year 1849 to a very common occurrence experienced by many. With respect for Neil Diamond, a large number of mid western Americans "packed up the babies and grabbed the old ladies" and headed for the riches of the west coast; the California Gold Rush was in full swing.
When they arrived and looked to purchase tools necessary to mine their riches, they found the prices were quite different from the cost of items back home.
"Twenty dollars for a shovel, that is ridiculous, they only cost a dollar back in Indiana.”
"Well I suggest that you go back to Indiana and buy one.”..
That my loyal readers is an example of opportunism.
Last Saturday the Allied two ball was hosted by Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown. As always the host club put on a fine run experience for county golfers. However sometimes there are things that can't be controlled.
If you were in the morning flight you probably found a parking spot in the spacious lot near the athletic field and registered to play. However later that morning, fans were arriving for a major track meet, and the lot was overflowing.
While the morning wave was still on the course, the afternoon golfers were arriving; it was a full field.
I remember reading a comment of the parking situation in Brattleboro VT during the Christmas shopping season, “The only way to find a parking spot was to buy a parked car.”
If I only had a house on Meacham St last Saturday my front yard would have looked like many houses on Jefferson Avenue in Saratoga during July and August.
I would have been out there with my lime green safety vest waving a flag while leaning on a sign that read "Parking $20.00".
Opportunism, indeed.

I was just asked who I thought would win the Celtics-Miami Heat series. My response was "You have to ask the only people that know the answer to that, the officials!"
I have watched most of the games in the first two rounds of the Eastern Conference playoffs and I cannot tell you what a travel is, what an offensive foul is or how much blood has to be on a player before he gets to the foul line.
I am aware that games are officiated differently in the playoffs and I don't want to be a "get off my lawn old fool,” but hey what gives here?
Two great events happened this week:
#1 Jack Nicklaus was offered $100 million to be the face of the Saudi Golf League and said "No thanks.”
#2 Albert Pujols took the mound in a recent blowout win for the Cardinals for an inning. He and the fans enjoyed the frivolity. Who said there is no fun in baseball? Albert gave up a bomb but made it through the inning but did not record a save.
Let's give a shout out to the Milwaukee Bucks. They showed class throughout their series with the Celtics. The Greek Freak is the best player in the league; he just got worn down.
Two celebrities spotted at the first tee at Wyndhurst Golf Club this week. First, it was Adams native and former Hoosac Valley HS hoop legend, Robbie Burke. The Springfield College grad is living in Springfield and is Dean of Students at JFK Junior High and is on the coaching staff of the Pope Francis basketball team. Next to make an appearance was an old friend and foe of mine, Kevin Boisjolie. I went down memory lane with Kevin recalling some encounters in the 60s and 70s. We also spoke of too many of our old friends who are no longer with us. Enjoy each day. He sends his best to our boss.

LPGA Tour
 Australian Mingee Lee finished 19 under par for a 2 shot win over 27-year-old American Lexi Thompson at the Cognizant Founders Cup, Upper Montclair CC, Clifton, NJ.
WITB- Since she is sponsored by Cleveland Golf, she plays the Srixon ZX7 10.5 degree driver, Srixon ZX 5 wood, the 19 degree Srixon ZX Hybrid and the 5 - PW forged irons. Naturally she plays the same trio 50, 54 and 58 degree ZipCore Cleveland wedges that we have in stock at the Pro Shop! PGA Tour
 South Korean K.H. Lee edged out hometown favorite Jordan Spieth again while at the same time defending his title at the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic at TPC Craig Ranch. Lee is on the Callaway Staff, but not a full bag contract! He begins with the Callaway Epic LS Driver and the Callaway LS 3 Wood Rogue. He then uses the Titleist TS3 Hybrid. All irons are Callaway X forged. He has 3 Titleist Vokey wedges and the Odyssey White Hot Two Ball MarxMan putter. His favored ball is the Titleist Pro V1x.
Tiger and Ricky Fowler will play at the season’s second major, the PGA Championship at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

DEEP Thoughts
A yoyo and I are similar in so many ways….up, down, good days, bad days, in the hospital, out. Every day I do feel like I’m getting stronger, and with radiation done on Tuesday, I will know more of what the future holds. Many have said it is hard to believe I’ve been in the hospital for three months; unheard of, they say. I am looking forward to my return home and my return to Waubeeka. Boston is a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live here.
