FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and caregivers who love unconditionally whether it be our children or our pets.  We hope you all enjoy your special day! Look below for our special Mother’s Day discount!

The tournament season has officially begun! This Saturday 224 Berkshire County golfers will be competing at Taconic Golf Club in the first Men’s Allied 4Ball.  We wish you all lots of luck!

Last Thursday our women’s Spring Cup team braved the freezing temperatures and snow flurries in Greenfield.  Scores, not surprisingly, were rather high, but the team managed to take 44 points and ended up in the middle of the pack.  Separation from first to fifth place is only a few points. This week the team travels to Taconic and takes on CC of Pittsfield.

As the season now moves from shoulder to regular season, our daily rates will undoubtedly be increasing.  There are many advantages to becoming a member listed below:

  • Play as many times as you like. Come over for a quick 9, a quick 6 or a few holes after work. Never feel you must finish the round because you don’t have to!
  • Receive discounted rates on cart rentals, pro shop purchases and Tavern food.
  •  Play in all the allied tournaments at discounted prices.
  •  Play on our Spring and Fall Cup teams where the price to pay some very fine courses is very inexpensive. How does $45 sound for golf, cart, breakfast and lunch at courses like Pittsfield and Crumpin Fox?
  •  Play with our pro and better your game. I call it, “a free lesson.”
  •  Invite your friends to join you at discounted rates.
  •  Join today….4 people join for the price of 3!

What are you waiting for?  The season has just begun!

Celtic coach of the year, Ime Yodoka, may have figured out a way to stop Giannis Antetokpunmpo and the rest of his teammates Tuesday night. Game 3 is Saturday in Milwaukee 3:30 on ABC-TV in this best of 7 series.

BINGO!....Looking for a new game that can be played by 2, 3 or 4 golfers? Try Bingo, Bango, Bongo.

Collect points this way:

  • Bingo….the first person to land on the green.
  • Bango….the first person closest to the hole once all balls are on the green.
  • Bongo….the first person to hole out.

Now, what was the wager?  A million dollars or a drink in the Tavern…and the bragging rights?…priceless!

This Saturday, the annual Kentucky Derby gets underway.  Our TV’s will be turned on and it will be exciting to watch which horse crosses the finish line first, with the opportunity to win the Triple Crown.  Got a favorite? I’m debating….but I will be wearing my favorite hat!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Our 9th hole project is looking better and better. This week we are moving topsoil around the sod.  We’re hoping to punch a few greens and top dress them next week.  We are also hoping to seed the target areas and over seed the driving range tee area.

FROM THE KITCHEN -

We have a chef on duty every day of the week from 10:30 to close.  If you feel you hungry and think perhaps you would like something to eat at the turn…..call 458-6000 on Hole #8 and we can take your order. Your food will be ready when you arrive! Quick and easy!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

Mother’s Day Special - All Moms will have the opportunity to play at Waubeeka on Sunday for $1 per hole! Treat mom to a day on the links. What a great deal! Cart fee is additional. We will also offer 20% off all women’s shoes and women’s clothing.

Please keep in mind that you can book your tee time online at any time. You just need to set up a customer account. Even if you are a member, you will be prompted for a credit card number but you will never be charged. The system needs the information to hold the time. Give it a try.

As the season begins to get started, now would be a great time to regrip those clubs. Check out the variety I have available. I will normally have them done within two days; most of the time, the next day they are ready.

This week’s trivia question, good luck!

In 1961, the year Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record, how many times was Maris intentionally walked? Answer below.

Do you want to manage a Major League baseball team? The best advice I ever heard was from the "Old Perfessor" Casey Stengel.

"You got 5 guys who like you, five guys who don't, and fifteen guys who are undecided. Your job is to keep the guys who don't like you away from the guys who are undecided.”
Makes sense to me.

Local celebrity spotted at the Wyndhurst practice range last week. Julia Murphy, granddaughter of Dick Rivers, was trying to eliminate her softball swings from her golf swing. She appeared to be doing just fine. Julia is a Pittsfield native and a recent graduate of D-1 Providence College where she had a great career as a pitcher and won many Big East honors. Julia lives in Boston and works for State Representative Smitty Pignatelli.

Flashback to the day when basketball box scores were actually carried by newspapers. This clip from the Springfield Union covering the Boys Club tourney in Pittsfield, 1964 ??

St. Francis of North Adams 82-69 over St. Ann's of Lenox.

Ray Lamoreaux 28, Steve Filliault 15, Kevin Boisjolie 11, Arnie Schmidt 11, Billy Callahan 10 paced the victors.

Fred Scully and Dennis D'Arcangelo were held scoreless. St. Ann's  must have utilized a box and one defense on them.

Why can't Dave O'Brien of NESN Red Sox broadcasts simply tell us that so and so walked in the third inning? He has to add that so and so "took a walk" or "has taken" a walk in his first at bat in the third. In a recent broadcast he outdid himself and forced me to hit the mute button when he hit us with this one, "Devers accepted  a walk in the third inning.”

I wonder if Devers could have rejected the base on balls and remained in the box. Dave, you are trying too hard.

Am I the only one to find it a bit strange that Tony Massarotti has been in the booth with O'Brien for a few games? For years on 98 The Sports Hub with co-host Michael Felger, he has not been shy to second guess and bad mouth the Red Sox. Now he has to change his tune.

I have to admit that he is doing an admirable job in the booth.

Golf thoughts, not to be confused with Deep Thoughts.

Let’s get all the golf courses dried out and ready for a great spring season.

Don't forget to get some new grips on those clubs and check your carts for your belongings upon completing your round. Erik "Square Deal" Tiele can help you with the grips.

There is not enough room in this newsletter to list the various items left in golf carts @ Wyndhurst over the years.

Relax,  the 19th hole is not closing, they will be there for you. Don't forget to tip the cart crew.

Trivia answer :

ZERO, NADA, ZIPPO. The reason…the guy on deck was Mickey Mantle.

LPGA Tour

Marina Alex won the Palos Verdes Championship on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour title, breaking a tie with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th and parring the final two holes for a one-stroke victory over Jin Young Ko.

The LPGA now moves to Sin City, Las Vegas where the match play Bank of Hope will be played.

Lydia Ko left a reporter speechless for her incredible honesty after a second place finish at the Palos Verdes Championship on Sunday. Lydia was seen stretching by Golf Channel's Jerry Foltz and he asked if her soreness would be a problem for the remainder of the tournament. She responded with "It's that time of the month" leaving Jerry speechless and wrapping up the interview.

PGA Tour

Last week the Tour went south of the border much to the liking of #2 ranked Jon Rahm as he won the Mexico Open staged at the beautiful Vidanta Resort in Vallarta, Mexico.  For his efforts, the 27-year-old Spaniard picked up $1,314,000.  Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama and Brandon Wu split second place money, each picking up $552,367.

Today marks the beginning of the Wells Fargo Championship.

DEEP Thoughts

I have 18 more radiation treatments and yes…I’m counting!  After that,  a decision will be made on how to get my needed transfusions once or twice a week, and hopefully that will be closer to home.  I will be so happy when I can get back to Waubeeka!  Missing you all!
