FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello  

Congratulations to two great Berkshire County high school golf teams, the Lenox Millionaires and the Mt. Greylock Mounties.  The knowledge gained from both teams’ coaching staffs, Dick Salinetti and Mark Gillis of Lenox and Mitchell Spooner and Casey Conry of Greylock was invaluable on a day that was counterintuitive to playing good golf, as the high winds and difficult greens at Greenfield CC led to unusually high scores for these excellent golfers!  Team Lenox won the Western MA Tournament led by Max Shepardson, Devan Patel, Captains Max DiGrigoli and Ben Haddad, Clifford Flynn and Noah Kirby.  

The Mounties also qualified for the MA state golf tournament to be played at Shining Rock Golf Course in Northbridge, MA, this coming Tuesday.  Greylock team members include Captain Alex Axt, Cameron Turner, Cayden Conry, Ben Dingman, Owen Petropulos, Thomas Art, Drew Scanlon and Will Cortes.  Congratulations to both these fine golf teams, ‘Building the Future Through Educational Athletics.’  Continued success in the state Division 3 tournament!







 

Remember Casey Martin, the pro who sued the PGA for the right to use a golf cart --and won in front of the Supreme Court?  Now Casey is the coach of the Oregon Men’s Golf team, (2016 National Champions) but unfortunately had to have his leg amputated above the knee last week.  Best wishes, Coach, recover quickly, the sport needs you!

Harry Sheehy, friend, mentor and coach, is on the road to recovery after a series of health issues, thanks to the great care he is getting from his doctors and wife Connie.  Interested in how Harry is progressing or want to send him a note?  Google the Caring Bridge website and look up Harry Sheehy.  Harry and Frank Zoltek coached basketball to many fine men over the years!

Yale v. Columbia,  a rematch of the first ever collegiate golf match in America will take place tomorrow at Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.  Originally played Nov. 6, 1896, 125 years ago, Yale won 35-0!  They scored differently back then. Rumor has it that they will use the same scoring system for this rematch.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett            

Today, golf designers, e.g. Tom Doak, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus,  Gil Hanse, Tom Fazio, Mark Mungeam and others, have placed more and more emphasis on minimalist design and emphasizing the natural beauty of the land.  The Golf Course Superintendents Association has held numerous seminars preaching the benefits derived from such interaction with nature.  AND, they have performed studies on the time golf maintenance crews lose while performing daily routine duties, e.g. mowing tees, moving trash receptacles and ball washers, moving benches and other man made objects placed on the course which detract from the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.  We understand both minimalist and conventional sides of the argument.  Next year, we ordered 20 new golf carts, equipped with ball washers, in an effort to listen to more conventional players.

Chicken Wings are popular now!  We have a limited supply of Prime Rib dinners and Ribeye steaks this weekend.  Lunch special is Ziti and Meatballs the rest of this week!  Reservations are required, and we close early now that darkness is upon us.  458-6000 for reservations.
 

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele 

This coming Sunday is our Annual Par Three Tournament!  All 18 holes will be played as par three’s ranging from 75 yards to 200 yds!  Entry fee includes a cart for $40 for non-members. A fun event to begin the wrap up to the 2021 season.  Make your own foursome and call the golf shop to make a tee time.  I will give $100 pro shop credit to the first hole-in-one on Sunday!  Non-members are invited to sign up also!

The Mount Greylock Golf Team benefit Scramble was played this past Sunday, October 17th. 13 teams played on a cool blustery afternoon for a great cause!  Mitch and Duffy (fundraisers extraordinaire!). 


1st Place went to the team of Duffy Judge, Brian Drake, Ed Bianchi and Andrew Stuebner. 

The Berkshire Seniors held the final event of their season yesterday at Waubeeka. The annual event drew 46 teams (92 players) for a two man scramble format. The following players found the podium!




The Gold Jacket Event, which marks the beginning of the end every season, was played by our Sunday morning group this past weekend.  Dan Bourdon became the first repeat winner!  Past winners of this event are:

Daily Hours of operation for the golf shop are now 8-6 daily Monday thru Sunday. The Driving Range hours are Monday thru Saturday 8-6 and Sunday 8-4. Please keep in mind that the driving range will be off of the mats for the remainder of the season!  We are in short supply of grass seed.

All proshop credit must be redeemed by the end of the month. Please don’t lose out on your yearly winnings!

Alright eagle-eye Berkshire County sports fans.. here is a question for you.  In last week's newsletter a picture of Julius Erving was featured in my column. The Doctor was shown trying to go over the top of a player to get a rebound.  The opposing player was using a box-out technique learned at St. Joseph High School in North Adams.  You will notice that both players' feet were off the court at the same height, however Julius had arms and hands of ridiculous length and size and had quite an advantage.  Boxing out The Doctor was Tommy Gentile wearing his St Anselm uniform.  If my memory serves me correctly Gentile held Dr. J to his lowest scoring game of his UMASS career. As Casey Stengel  said, "You can look it up.”  Tommy was coached by Bruce Gallagher and Frank Zoltek at St. Joe.  Later in his career Tommy tossed in 56 points in the NA ‘Y’ League and a teammate in the same game had 47 points.  Needless to say, defense was not stressed.


 
 

I once again was a Marshall for the Western Mass. DI Golf Championship at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield on Monday.  The 4 kids in my group were very talented and had all the shots. They were from Chicopee Comp, Auburn HS, East Longmeadow and Westfield HS.  I witnessed 230 yard 5 iron shots, excellent bunker play and kids who were able to reach par fives with ease in two shots.  In conclusion, none of my troops broke 83.  Short game and putting probably is not stressed enough with our youngsters, who all can certainly "rip it.”  Medalist was a sophomore from Longmeadow HS, Ryan Downes, with a 70.  His dad, Billy cashed a couple of checks on the PGA tour and is the head pro at Great Horse in Hamden, MA, after holding  the same position at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield in his younger days.  His grandfather "Red" Downes was basketball and golf coach at WNEC in Springfield for years. He was a great friend of Joe Zavattaro.

Our sympathies from everyone who knew him at Waubeeka to the family of John "Cano" Cantoni who passed away recently.  John learned he had stage 4 cancer in September and battled until the end.  Jim Petropulos remembers Cano as the MVP of their 8th grade “Y” League basketball  team.  Jim remained in touch with John during his illness. "He never saw a shot that he didn't like, or take" Jim added.  John played hoops for me and Coach Jim Freeney at Drury and was tri captain of the football team his senior year under Roger Cirone. He will be missed.

Bigfoot  (sculptured by Ken Packi) was indeed sighted at Waubeeka recently, with a Titleist Pro V1 in his left hand!  Contemplating a call to law enforcement, the situation resolved itself as witnesses saw him throw it back onto the driving range, a toss of about 400 yards!  The detail shown is surreal; rumor has it Bigfoot wants to move on to greener pastures!

All the ladies are in Busan in the Republic of Korea for the long anticipated BMW Championship.  Don’t forget, Jin Young Ko had shot 14 straight rounds in the 60’s, tying Annika Sorenstam’s record.  Actually, play started last night at 11 PM our time.  Ko shot a one under par 71 and now goes into the record books as tied with Annika and So Yeon Ryu as her attempt at the record falls 2 shots short!    

DEEP Thoughts - 

Hats off to Dick Syriac for noticing that the player jumping just as high as Dr. J in last week’s photo was St. Joe graduate, Tommy Gentile when he played for St. Anselm’s college!  Tommy was always seen in the Walnut St area of North Adams, where his dad Ike and mom Bernice kept a tight leash on him and older brother Joe, two great athletes to come out of North Adams.
