We received a nice surprise in the mail this week when we opened a ‘Thank you’ note from Doug Milne’s brother, Gordy.  It was a purple wristband from the Lustgarten Foundation which specializes in Pancreatic Cancer Research. 

Happy to see the Dean of high school golf coaches here this past Monday.  Dick Salinetti, a legend both on the links and in his community, brought his Lenox team here for a match against our own Mt. Greylock team.  The student athletes at Lenox who have the opportunity to learn from coach Salinetti are taught a whole lot more than golf.  Continue on, Coach, and best of health!

Huge tip of the hat to our staff.  It all starts in the pro shop where Erik is so willing to help our staff with lending an employee or two to the kitchen in super busy times, where Brian and the grounds crew will happily assume water filling and trash pickup whenever needed and our kitchen which is understaffed, yet always willing to do whatever extra is needed to make every customer feel like the most important person in the world.  Thank you to such a great team, for working together, enjoying being here and being happy! If you would like to join our team to end out the year and perhaps secure a job next season, give us a call!

We fixed our 22nd irrigation leak of the season.  Not bad - we have been open 25 weeks and have used the system less than any other year.   Mother Nature and her rain took care of it!  Use it or lose it!  Go figure!

The Tuesday night Ladies League completed their season with a banquet and awards night.  The laughs they generate are contagious!  Thanks for being here. 

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele -  I am finalizing our demo day with PXG and Cobra. It appears that it will be either October 1st or 8th. If you would like to attend a fitting day, I strongly suggest you take the Trackman Combine test prior to the fitting day.  You cannot score if you don’t know your distances from 100 yards to the pin!

Signup for our one-day combined Men’s and Women’s Member/Guest tournament in the pro shop (get application here). The date of this event is October 1st, 1PM shotgun start. Members may invite 1, 2 or 3 guests or pair up with another member and their guest to comprise a four man/women team.  Entry fee per team, one member and 3 guests is $280 ($70 per player). Every player will receive a sleeve of golf balls (their choice), cart, prizes and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres after the event!

The Senior Club Championships begin today!  13 competitors in the Senior flight and 6 in the Super Seniors!
The Berkshire Seniors Fall series gets going next week with the first stop at Berkshire Hills on September 22nd. We will be hosting the finale on October 20th.

Nancy Barry & Staci Govi teamed up to win the Senior Women’s Senior Open at Berkshire Hills CC last Thursday. Nice job, ladies!

This week the Sunday Sweeps format was delete the 5th hole. Chris Bourdon claimed first gross with a 68, Todd Shafer and his 70 took second while Geoff Tatro was third with a 71. Bill Molloy was firing away and took the low net honors with a scorching 62. Second net went to Denny Lawson and Jack Pieraccini with their 64’s!

Glow Ball winners were Mark and Ben Dingman and Mark Lancia!  Oh what fun they had!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:   Berkshire County lost a true friend,  a man that accomplished many things in his 82 years.  Paul Perachi passed away recently at Albany Med.  I, like many that knew him, would describe him as a "good man".  Paul was a St Joe Pittsfield grad and excelled as a two sport athlete while there.  He later taught and coached at St. Joe where he had Frank Scago as a point and shooting guard.  He played college hoops at NASC where he was a member of a team that was enshrined into the MCLA Hall of Fame.  Paul was principal of Lenox High School and later graduated from Western New England College Law School.  He first practiced law in 1983 and in 1995 was appointed as Associate Justice for the Mass.Trial Court.   After his retirement from the bench, he honed his photography skills and had some great works that he shot during his trips to Italy.  He could be spotted at area craft fairs with his pictures on display.  Paul was a very talented, driven man who excelled at whatever he attempted.  If you ask the people of Lenox who knew him as an administrator in the school system, why he didn't continue in education the response would be, "he was too nice a guy.”
As a judge he helped many young people turn the corner and become better citizens under his watch.
Linda and I send our sincere condolences to his wonderful family. 

While surfing my Sirius Radio dial I came upon a station that plays 60’s music only.  I recognized the songs but had trouble identifying the recording artists. If I want to ever make Jeopardy I better start to pay attention.  How would you do it?  The Supremes are easy. They are very recognizable because they had so many hits.  In my early days I worked as a stagehand at the Big E in West Springfield.  I remember Diana Ross demanding her own private dressing room, away from the other gals.  The groups that are a challenge include: The Ronettes, Crystals, Marvelettes, Shirelles, Cookies, Chiffons, Orlons and The Shangri Las.  On second thought, these could possibly be the same group, using multiple names to sell more records?
If you see anyone around Waubeeka that you think would know all of these groups, try Ed Noel.  I'm sure that you did not know this fact but now you know the rest of the story.  

When NBC was looking for an overweight former athlete to play the bartender on their new comedy "Cheers" they interviewed some interesting candidates.  Tom Heinsohn and John Madden auditioned for the part and, as you know, did not get the role.  Former MLB umpire Ron Luciano got his shot at a steady job also but was rejected.

Let's hope this year's high school and college athletes can experience a more normal 2021 than the class of 2020.

Congratulations to all the club champions from all the Berkshire County clubs. I would like to see all this talent assembled for a playoff for county honors. 

Western Mass offered something in the past and the Boston Globe sponsored a state-wide event to bring all the champs together.  I don't believe that is still a thing.

 

Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf  

Angelina Radocchia brought her talent to Massachusetts yesterday when she installed her sculpture “Circles”.  Angelina is a most talented, hard working artist who envisions something for a place and creates and designs after that.  Her time is divided equally between her love of art and her talent to raise horses at her home in Bennington, VT.  She selected to place this work on the tee at Hole 8.  Do you see golf balls?  Can more be better?  Come explore this exciting work; have lunch when you visit!

PGA Tour - Silly season begins today with the Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort, Napa, CA.  Of course the Ryder cup begins next week at Whistling Straits!  Captain Steve Stricker finalized his 6 picks last week on live TV with favorites Jordan Spieth (3 majors), Xander Schauffele (Olympic Gold), Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, Harris English and Scottie Scheffler.  They will join Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Colin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson, who all qualified based on points in the past 2 years!  The USA is 2 - 7 against Europe in the past 9 matches.  Europe has Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland,  Lee Westwood, Sergio, Shane Lowry and Rory for starters.
PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Rookie of the year award was really between Will Zalatoris (runner-up at The Masters) and Garrick Higgo (3 wins this season). Zalatoris won!  It was a vote of the Tour’s membership; Higgo played more in Europe, which we are sure was a factor!  Happy for Z (and his sponsor Titleist), well liked and talented!  He will tee it up at the Fortinet today! 

LPGA Tour - Today is the 50th anniversary of the Cambia Portland Classic which begins this morning in West Linn, Oregon. (On the golf channel 3-6 PM starting today.)

DEEP Thoughts -   In retrospect, Mother Nature has been very good to us this season.  30 inches of rain, not many cancelled events, but maybe the most disappointing was this past Monday, where the NENY PGA had their showcase event scheduled here.  These pros, especially our own Erik Tiele, work so hard and deserve the chance to get together, renew old friendships and network about this industry.  Just emphasizes how fortunate we are to have a course with cart paths on 14 holes and an ever improving drainage system.  Sorry pros, maybe next year?
