FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Ladies’ Club Champion Nancy Barry got off to a slow start in the MGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Tournament played at the Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield yesterday and Tuesday.  She shot a 178 two-day total, but was 6 shots better in the rain yesterday.  Nancy came in 4th place in the Tournament Division, which was captured by 25 time Berkshire Hills Club champion Diane Breen, who shot a terrific 162!  Barry has been seen at Waubeeka helping many of our juniors and instructing in our summer camps.  Congrats to these fine ladies!

The Allied Scotch will be played at the beautiful Wyndhurst facility in Lenox, MA on Sunday, September 12, at a cost of $70 PP and includes the cart.  Both players must be members of an Allied Club to participate.

What we’ve learned from COVID…. Golf is booming in this little county of Berkshire, MA.  Rounds are up at most courses by double digits, despite a rain soaked July (thank you cart paths), new and returning golfers are sticking with golf, revenue per available rounds is up, rate is up and discounted times are declining!  What does this mean?  Translation... join a golf course, be part of the growth, help shape your future, bring your family; make golf part of your life’s enjoyment.

Join Waubeeka now and play September, October and November for free.  Your dues will not be due until opening day, April 15, depending on weather, but you must place a deposit on your initiation fee which can be paid in installments.  Let’s talk; we will make it easy for you.  Also, the deal that potential new members look forward to each year is on again!  Four members can join and only pay for 3!  What a great way to make your own foursome all season long!  See Membership rates here.

Special rates this fall include: today through Saturday, play 18 holes with a cart for $55 and get a $5 credit toward food in the Tavern.  Beginning Monday, Sept 6, our new end of season rates are as follows: $65 includes cart weekdays and $85 on the weekend!

Great outdoor Norwegian concert this Saturday at 4 PM at The Clark.  The Knights Orchestra.  Bring a blanket and the price is right--FREE!  Check out some of the artwork on the grounds while you’re there.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

We completed the aerification process this past Tuesday, top dressed and overseeded all 18 greens.  Our entire staff worked very hard and I am very proud of what they accomplished.  The process moved along seamlessly, and if the weather is in our favor next week, we will begin aerification of tees and approaches.

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -

Friday and Saturday nights we will be serving pork tenderloins, eggplant parmesan and chicken broccoli.   Reservations are required.

TRACKMAN UPDATE:  The best way to lower your score is to know how far you hit every club in your bag.  99% of regular golfers do not know how far they hit their irons, especially their scoring clubs.  Getting 10 feet closer on every approach shot will give you a better opportunity to get up and down, with the potential to take 18 shots off your game!  Trackman is here, it is available and for a COMBINE test, the cost is $90.  The value: priceless!

Congratulations to one of our junior members, Gabe Thomas, age 10, who had the thrill of a lifetime Sunday night at the Stamford Valley Golf Course.  On the 230 yard 9th hole par 4, Gabe not only drove the green, but put his shot right into the center of the cup for his first ever hole-in-one!  It was witnessed by his mom & dad, Rob & Ashleigh, and his teacher Mary Beth Gardner.

The final Sunday Junior Free clinic will be this upcoming Sunday. We will have a short session on the range and then do our annual golf ball search in the brook on Hole 7!  Last year we found over 70 golf balls all thanks to our junior searchers!

The Ladies Chip and Sip will be off this Monday due to the holiday. We will have our “review” session on Monday the 13th and then a small mini four hole course management session on the 20th.

Tuesday, September 28th is the last remaining Play with the Pro Day. If you are interested in playing, grab a threesome and let me know. We can set up whatever time you would like to play that day and afterwards grab a quick bite to eat!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:    A big ‘Thank You’ to all those who took the time to send our friend Fred Goerlac a note.  Never too late to say “Hey Fred”!  His address is Hillcrest Commons, Room 429, 169 Valentine Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201.  His wife Debbie is a caregiving champion!

We were just out for a quick nine holes on Monday at Wyndhurst Golf Resort in Lenox.  Our group consisted of  Matt Cyr, Mark Sottile and yours truly.  On Hole # 5, a 194 yard par 3, Mark hit a shot that I immediately said, " that could go in the hole", and it did. Two little bounces just over the right front bunker and 3' of roll and it was in the jar.  Mark had little time to celebrate his accomplishment because he had to complete a  plumbing issue at my crib.  Mark hit a 3 iron (do they still make those?) for career ace # 1.  He is a solid player and also knows his way around bathroom sinks.

It is an exciting time for major league baseball.  Fans will certainly be doing a lot of scoreboard watching. How about the Yankees winning 13 in a row and gaining little ground on those Tampa Bay Rays.  It will be fun to follow the rest of the season.  Milwaukee Brewers are a solid team, Dodgers are loaded, Astros can not be ignored and the White Sox can put a lot of runs on the board. Oh yea, there are also those SF Giants and the Atlanta Braves to consider. .

Derek Paris of Mt. Greylock HS has given a verbal commitment to play D-I baseball at UMBC in Maryland. He can hit, he can pitch and he can run, as his 14-15 SBs this season shows.  If UMBC is looking for a solid catcher they now have one.  I first saw Derek when he was playing in an under 13 game at Bill Laston Field in Lanesboro.  Anyone who attempted to steal a base on him was forced to take the walk of shame back to the pine.  He was the best catcher that I had ever seen at that level.  I also saw him have a 40+ point game against Lenox when he played hoops as a sophomore.  Derek is the grandson of a well known golfer of Berkshire County, John Dawley.   Great kid from a great family and we wish him all the best.

OPINION from one of my loyal followers, Brian Majewski of Pittsfield: NBC stinks!
NBC stinks when it comes to golf coverage.  I thought that they learned from the "Heidi" game back in the 1960s?  The BMW Championship goes to a playoff -- a playoff -- and yet NBC happily signs off to go to a preseason NFL football game -- a meaningless preseason NFL football game -- a preseason game of the hapless NY Giants at that.

The reason the PGA rearranged their major tournaments and moved up the FedEx playoffs to August was so that it didn't compete with precious, sacred football.

Yet, NBC will sign off early if the golf tournament gets exciting and goes to a playoff, because, heck, there is preseason football to watch.
What a joke.

Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

This sculpture is so colorful as you drive down Route 7, it compels you to slow down and think, what is that, what surrounds that, what does it symbolize, how expensive is that treasure?  Flame Dance, comprised of welded and powder coated steel, was created by Steven Brooks,  who has a summer home in Arlington, VT!  The work stands 8’ tall and is priced very reasonably for a true lover of the work!  Flame Dance would make a tremendous impact in a spacious green backyard!!

PGA Tour - What a show Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay put on going into the final week of the PGA season.  Six action packed holes, emotional and clutch putts for the entire nation to watch as these two warriors went toe-to-toe to give us a tremendous display of golf at its best!  Patrick Cantlay made a 17 foot birdie putt on the 6th playoff hole, with the imposing, larger than life DeChambeau watching, to end the duel at the BMW in Caves Valley GC, Owings Mills, Maryland.  40 players were eliminated, leaving only 30 PGA Professionals able to rake in that $15 million top prize, while last place will collect $395,000.  Cantlay will begin the FedEx Cup Tour Championship at East Lake CC in Atlanta at -10, Tony Finau -8, DeChambeau -7, Jon Rahm -6, Cameron Smith -5 and 20 others who will begin Round 1 under par before they hit a shot!  Only 5 players will begin the round at even par!
2 takeaways from the BMW:  1. Every single player in the tournament broke par, 2. Cantlay gained 14.58 shots on the field with his putting!  He made 537 feet of putts over the weekend using the Scotty Cameron X5!
Ryder Cup update: Qualifying for the 6 automatic spots were Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka.  Koepka and DeChambeau promised Captain Steve Stricker to like each other from now on!  Stricker will make his other 6 picks after the Tour Championship.

LPGA TourU.S. Solheim Cup team Captain Pat Hurst knows all 12 team members after the results of the AIG.  Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, Ally Ewing, Austin Ernst, Lexi Thompson, Jessica Kodra, Megan Khang, Lizette Salas, Jennifer Kupcho, Brittany Altomare, Mina Harigae and Yealimi Noh comprise the entire squad.  Play against Team Europe takes up the labor day weekend Sept. 4 - 6 at Inverness, Toledo, Ohio.

DEEP Thoughts -  Ben Hogan’s famous quote is worth repeating this week……As you walk down the fairway of life, you must smell the roses for you only get to play one round.
