FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

The Women’s Fall Classic will be held on Saturday, September 25th.  Our Spring Classic was a sell-out, so if you intend to play, find a partner and sign up today! Click here for entry form.

The North Adams Steeplecats gave us three months of enjoyment and  proved to be a classy baseball club which earned our respect and admiration.  Those of us fortunate enough to meet these student/athletes are richer for the experience.  We all wish them great success no matter where their career path takes them, and we hope they will always remember their fans and the experience that coming here has given them!

Shaquille O'Neal was at Camp Winadu last Tuesday! Such a special treat for the kids in Pittsfield who got to meet him, one lucky child won $10,000 for making a long shot!  An inspiration, for sure.  Winadu does a great job, Tim Conway, PGA Pro, brought some of the kids to Waubeeka nearly every day!  Thanks Tim.

Sorry to hear Coca-Cola Bottling is abandoning its plant in North Hampton, leaving 319 people without a job.  Bobby Jones, founder of Augusta National GC and winner of the Grand Slam in 1930, owned the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Pittsfield and they closed in 2018, putting a dozen workers out of a job.

Howard Herman of the Berkshire Eagle wrote a nice story about Major League Hall of Famer Dale Long  who played his high school baseball in Adams.  Surprised how some players in Adams didn’t even know that he holds the record for most home runs in consecutive games along with Ken Griffey Jr. and Don Mattingly.  Long later he moved to Barbour St in North Adams, where his son Dale Jr. made quite a name for himself as a two sport star for St. Joe!  Last we knew, Dale Jr. was coaching high school golf in New York!

Last, but maybe should be first, 35 friends of the late Doug Milne raised $2000 to help fight pancreatic cancer.  Golfers are wonderful, selfless individuals when it comes to helping others.  Thank you to everyone who played for Doug to support this wonderful cause.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

We encourage you to apply sunscreen; however, please not on our green grass!  Do it in the parking lot or on the cart paths!  Also, our pro shop has an abundant supply of various brands!

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -

Specials this weekend include Filet Mignon, Lobster Tails, Surf ‘n’ Turf, fresh asparagus, potato and dessert, in addition to our regular menu!  We suggest pairing with a bottle of Simi or one of our Cabernet Sauvignon choices. Reservations are required and we stop serving at 8 PM.

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

MEMBER MEMBER is this SUNDAY!
Choose a partner, choose your foursome and then pick your tee time. It’s that easy! $40 team or $20 player, whichever way you want to divy it up!

Tax Free Weekend.  Saturday and Sunday, the 14th and 15th.  Every driver, sets of clubs, metals, putters, everything in the pro shop will be sold with no tax!  Not our usual huge selection; everything is moving, getting ready for next season's line.  See square deal Tiele before the weekend.  Thank you, Governor Baker!

I would like to Congratulate Waubeeka’s own Dan Bourdon for claiming the Allied Net Overall Championship last Sunday. He fired a net 69 (-2). “I wanted to defend our home turf, just happy it worked out.”  Other Waubeeka members, Tom Degray 73 (4th) and Ron Goss 75 (9th) also had a great event. The Championship was held here with 75 players in the field. The field was split into two divisions.  Also, congratulations to Geoff Tatro who made the cut in the Gross Division played at Wahconah, but came up short in his second 18 holes!

Congratulations to all of our junior members that took part in the junior golf tournament which was hosted by Greenock GC.The event which was free to all of the juniors was sponsored by Muthiah and Vasnhti Sulaiman. Thank you for offering this to our future golfers!  10 year old Gabe Thomas, a first year junior member, took 4th place honors in the 10-12 year old division. What makes it even sweeter is that this was his first junior tournament that he has played in! Owen Petropolus fired an 80 and Ben Dingman had a 84 in the 13-15 division. They finished 2nd and 4th  respectively. Again, congratulations to all of you on a great job.

Thank you to our members, friends and guests for all of the used golf balls that are “rolling” in! (pardon the pun) We can never have enough balls for the range, so thank you!

Our final Junior Golf Camp of the season is concluding today.  We had 14 more youngsters in this school which brought the total for our three schools to an amazing 44 students!

Keep in mind that we still have 4 weeks left for our free Sunday Junior clinics.  Instruction takes place from 1-2 PM and then we conclude with some snacks back down in the clubhouse area.

The women’s Chip and Sip just finished
up week 3 with 19 more enthusiastic women looking for
some help with their game. Monday nights from 6-7 is chipping time and then 7:15 to ? is sipping time!

Want to feel old?

I recall watching Michelle Dobek of Chicopee hit golf balls at her families' Driving Range. She was 7 years old and had the best swing on the mats.  She went on to play at Florida International University and then at age 22 joined the FuturesTour and ultimately played on the LPGA Tour.  Michelle won 2 events on the Futures Tour and cashed a couple of checks on the big tour.  Recently she qualified for the US Senior Women's Open to be played in Fairfield, CT.  She shot 76 at Brooklawn CC in Fairfield CT to qualify.  Michelle has hung her shield at Fairview CC in Greenwich where she has a large following as an instructor.

Just in case we ever make it to Jeopardy:

Budweiser first put their beer in cans in:

A-1926
B-1936
C-1946

Answer below

We had some Beek members cash in at Worthington CC last week. Their names will not be published here because I believe their scores were spotted in the net division.  The best net score ever up there was posted by my late friend Ron "Pop" Dean when he carded a net 46! (not a typo).

If any of our shippers want to take their games on the road, maybe Greenfield CC could be an option.

Aug 28 or 29 (Play either day) the Greenfield Open will take place at Greenfield CC.(good place to hold it, no?)  $52.00 is the fee.  If you see Joe Golonka up there, say hi for me.

Answer to quiz : 1936.

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

We have had more comments and discussion about the Guitar than any other piece.  Lots of aspiring accomplished artists have asked about putting that in their backyard, and a lot of wannabees also!  Jose Criollo, originally from Ecuador, has certainly made the best use of circular saw blades and other interesting recycled metals!

PGA Tour -

Abraham Ancer beat Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns in a two hole playoff in Memphis, Tennessee.  The real story though is the meltdown of Harris English, who entered the back 9 on the final day of the World Golf Championships/St. Jude Invitational with a 5 shot lead over the winner!

Meanwhile at the Barracuda Championship in Truckee, CA, Erik van Rooyen edged Andrew Putnam to join Abraham Ancer as a first time PGA Tour winner. They played a modified Stableford scoring system.

LPGA Tour

Another GOLD Medal for the USA in Golf Women’s Olympics.  Nelly Korda,  the best player in the world, led from wire to wire, but what an exciting finish and what unbelievable playing by our GOLD Medalist!  Japan’s Mone Inami took the Silver medal and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko won the Bronze.

DEEP Thoughts -

(HAPPY BIRTHDAYS) We are having a little celebration for our GM, Vicki Richardello and her Mom, Marge.  Vicki’s birthday is on Saturday while Marge’s birthday is on Sunday!  Rumor is they will sing a duet.  Please stop over between 6:30 - 10 PM on Friday the 13th, have a little cheese and crackers, share a laugh or two and say thanks Vicki for a great Newsletter and thanks Margie for teaching her how to write!  Everyone is welcome.
