Duncan Robinson, former basketball star at DIII Williams College and D1 Michigan, signed with the NBA’s Miami Heat for $90 million. No exclamation point needed or intended. Worth every penny; we only wish the Celtics paid for him. Fastest player ever to make 500 three pointers in NBA history! We’ll be in Boston watching him one of these days!
The Women’s Fall Classic will be held this year on Saturday, September 25th. It fills up fast, so if you intend to play, get your entry in ASAP. Entries forms are here on our website.
August is here and hopefully, the weather will return to the warm, sunny days we had in early June. Time flies, so plan the last of your summer days by playing the game we all love.

Game two of the second round of the NECBL finds our North Adams Steeplecats at home tonight, 6:30 PM against the Upper Valley Nighthawks from Hartford, VT. They must win tonight to force a third game in order to advance and win their first ever Championship! If you haven’t been to one of these games, trust me, these guys are talented. Don’t be surprised if some of them go on to the major leagues!
Former Steeplecat  Matthew Hayden Koperniak, 23, of Adams, has been promoted to the Peoria Chiefs, the High-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinal organization. They beat the South Bend Cubs in an away game last night 5-2.
Glow Ball will return in September. We will limit the field to 9 teams, 36 players. Details coming shortly!
Olympic Basketball - Team USA beat Australia last night 97-78, erasing a 17 point first half deficit to a team that beat them previously. The Gold Medal game will take place Sunday at 11:30 AM EST against either France or Slovenia. They began play at 7 AM this morning.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett
 Last week I addressed the member's concerns and reasons why we try to strike a balance between ball washers and trash cans on the golf course. A more important balance is how do we provide a home for Monarch Butterflies while still supplying an aesthetically superior golf course? The Monarch Butterfly is a marvelous migratory phenomenon. If we should cut one section of their territory, we will always leave another section of the golf course for them to have a home all season long.

If you haven’t enjoyed a cocktail out on our patio, now is the perfect time.  On a warm, summer night, the perfect date is enjoying a cocktail while watching the sun set over the Taconic mountains. Absolutely beautiful! Last night we had the firepit lit and lots of people took advantage of the perfect night, enjoying some of our terrific appetizers!

Our final Junior Camp will begin next Tuesday!! 16 enthusiastic juniors will begin their golf journey!
 Our free Sunday Junior Clinic continues. I set the putting green up last week into a six-hole mini course for our great group of kids; we did a brief lesson and that was followed by a golf tournament. Unlike miniature golf, this is the REAL deal!
Greenock CC will host its annual free Junior (6-18) Golf Tournament next Wednesday, August 11 at 9 AM. The event, sponsored by Muthiah and Vasnhti Sulaiman includes lunch, tee gifts, prizes and a scholarship! Call the pro shop 413-243-3323 NOW to register! Also, when you arrive, seek out Dr. & Mrs. Sulaiman to just say ‘Thanks.’
The women’s Chip and Sip continues to be a great hit! 21 women took part of session two which covered the chip shot and a very brief intro into pitching!! Session three on Monday will find us on the range beginning to discover the perfect golf swing!

Golf Clubs needed for sale. Either trade your clubs in toward a new set or I will buy your clubs for cash. I have plenty of demo clubs available for you to try on the range! Xander Schauffele used the Callaway driver, metals, and irons, Titleist Vokey wedges and putted with the Odyssey SuperStroke grip. You can demo any of the above as they are all in stock.
Please begin paying attention to the monthly schedule as August begins a very busy tournament season! There may be a day or two where you might possibly get shut out to play but on most days you will still have the ability to play early or late.
This week’s sweeps format was delete #1, #10 and #11. And the winners were...drumroll please….. 1st Gross went to Todd Shafer, 2nd was claimed by Jamie Gaffey, 3rd went to Jim Crews and 4th went to Chris Bourdon. Net positions were as follows: 1st Curtis Gazaille, 2nd Dave Rickert, 3rd was taken down by Gary Urkevich and 4th went to Fred Scully.

The job of a golf course superintendent is not an easy one at all. If you ask most supers, "Who is your boss?” they will respond "I've got 300 of them.” Here is my message to all golfers and please pay attention. I'll make it simple.
* Golf courses are in business to attract customers and provide the best product possible, pay the bills, make payroll and hopefully turn a profit when the season concludes.
* The superintendent is responsible for keeping the course in great playing condition. A former mayor of North Adams had a slogan during a campaign "To attract, we must be attractive.” Eliminate the kinks from your links and they will come.
* The super has to answer to the owner or board of directors at any club.
I bring this stuff up because of the awful weather we have experienced recently in Berkshire County. If highways, parking lots (and my cellar) have had trouble dealing with the downpours and flooding conditions, imagine caring for acres of tees, greens and fairways. During times like these, decisions have to be made; at times they could be unpopular. If a golf course shuts down for a day or decides to enact a cart path only policy or the dreaded "walking only" and not allow carts out at all, you as a golfer may feel inconvenienced, but that is something that you have to deal with. There could be a few nearby bowling alleys that are open for you, deal with it. It is the old damned if you do, damned if you don't. Shut the place down and lose revenue and maintain your course conditions or open up for carts and the money taken in goes toward overtime to make repairs to the damage. Such decisions are made in everyone's best interest. Chill. I have been in the company of a large group of adults who can't understand why they can't play during a frost delay. Time for these cats to "google" area bowling alleys.
Now that the Cleveland MLB baseball team will no longer be referred to as "The Indians" or "The Tribe" maybe Stockbridge Golf Club should eliminate their Native American logo. If they are taking suggestions down there for a new one, I submit a canoe.
I watched the NBA draft Thursday night and came away with theses observations:
* Socks were optional.
* Bling is in.
* To Adam Silver, we know it is 2021.
* The over/under on the phrase "Thank You So Much" was 33, I took the over and cashed in.
If golf clubs in Berkshire County want to form a basketball league  to pass the time during the winter months I have chosen the team to represent Waubeeka: They will need a shooter and someone to make clutch free throws at crunch time: Fred Scully. (He once made 57 straight at a NASC practice after Coach Joe Zav told the team, "We don't go home until someone makes 20 free throws in a row.” Fred was at 57 when Zav shut the lights out.) Someone to be unselfish and pass the ball to Fred, Ron Goss. Strength up front and someone to control the boards, Nick Petropulos. Power Forward, someone to penetrate and drive while also stretching the floor, Jim Freeney. Player coach, who else but Ed Noel. They will need an experienced cheerleader and that job goes to Vicki Richardello. Hope she still has her Mohawk uniform from the 60s.
A Waubeeka member took his game on the road and made a remarkable shot on # 4 at Wyndhurst Manor & Club in Lenox. Sam Canfield stuffed a nine in the ground for an eagle. That is the first time that I have heard of a deuce on that hole, but as my wife Linda has told me often, I don't listen. If anyone is down county and wants to enjoy a brew or two with a bite, stop at Bagel & Brew in Lenox and say hello to Sam and his golfing and business partner Phil Cohen, (and Ben Nader) also a Beek member. If during the morning hours, the coffee and bagels are great, ditto for lunch options.

We have received more comments on this piece than any other, and it just arrived last Saturday! Jose Criollo arrived here from Ecuador and graced us with his and his lovely family’s presence. We were truly happy to see the entire family pulling for each other and complimenting each other. We learned a lot last Saturday!

PGA Tour -
WE GOT THE GOLD!  USA’s XANDER Schauffele won the Gold Medal in the Olympic Competition which ended last Sunday in Tokyo. Xander has been around the leaderboard consistently, but alas, after 2 years, got himself the grand prize! Rory Sabbatini, a name from way back, representing Slovakia, took the Silver while a 7 way playoff ensued for the Bronze medal. China’s C.T. Pan prevailed against a star-studded conglomerate including Japan’s favorite son, Hideki Matsuyama, Irish Rory McIlroy, USA’s Colin Morikawa.
Today marks the start of the Barracuda Championship, Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood), Truckee, Calif., while in Memphis, Tennessee the WGC St. Jude Invitational is being played!

LPGA Tour -
American Emma Talley and Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn both finished 16 under par in the ISPS World Invitational completed in Northern Ireland on Sunday. Anannarkarn squeaked out her first LPGA win in a 2 hole sudden death playoff.
Speaking of names from way back, Annika Sorenstam won the US Senior Open by 8 shots over her nearest competitor!
Yesterday, the Women’s Olympics started and after 2 rounds, Nelly Korda of Team USA is the leader with a 2 day 9 under total. Her sister Jessica is at 4 under, Danielle Kang is 2 under while teammate Lexi Thompson is even par on moving day!

DEEP Thoughts -
It is a blast interacting with the kids who come to our Sunday clinics at 1 PM to play the game of golf. No idea where they are from, what their background is, or what they have experienced in the past. They are happy, they smile and they enjoy what they do. Life is so simple and uncomplicated. Why do they have to grow up?
