The third and final day of the Waubeeka Adult Golf School is being held today. Our three terrific instructors, Erik, Fran and Tomas taught us many different ways to improve our game. They didn’t force us to make major changes, but those that did, raved about the results. I’m sure all the students in the class will take away something to better their game from this experience. From putting, to chipping, to pitching, to the full swing, I can honestly say it was well worth the time and effort. As for myself, I can’t wait to take what I learned out on the course. And, I’ve vowed to practice, practice, and practice. As tired as I was last night, I went in the backyard and yes, practiced! If they ever have this class again, I strongly urge you to take advantage of this deal….$400 for 18 hours of intense instruction. I will definitely do it again.
I heard wonderful things from my friends who volunteered at the Twin Bridges Championship, The Symetra Tour at Pine Haven. The experience shared by everyone was so successful that the tour plans to return to Pine Haven in the future.
It’s not that we don’t have a great driving range now, but staying open longer and giving families the opportunity to hit balls until 10 or 11 PM might attract a ton more millennials! What would the cost be to add lights? Something we should look into.
Good luck Cole Custer who this season is at Harvard. Cole, a MGRHS grad, is a star on the swim team and hopes to represent the USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics!

Our North Adams Steeplecats are ½ game out of first place with just one game left at Joe Wolfe Field. There is a chance they could win their first league title in their history! With 4 of their last 5 games not at home, it will be difficult, but these players are very very special! Go Cats, bring that title to North Adams!
 Our EV charging stations have seen increased use lately. Either more people are buying electric vehicles or golfers who have electric vehicles are coming here to charge their cars and improve their game, all at the same time!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett
Minimalist. Pre-COVID, the golf course had a ball washer on 18 holes, 4 sets of tees on 18 holes, benches, wire boxes for broken tee disposal, trash cans, directional signs, green posts, restaurant menus and who knows what other convenient distractions owners and promoters will conceive. Then COVID happened and the golf industry boomed! Banned were all of the above in the name of health, safety and welfare, sort of like the days when this great game began in Scotland. The golfer and nature--no distractions and the Superintendent with his job to do. Now, Post-COVID, there are 2 different schools of thought: 1. put all the distractions and conveniences back to ‘normal’, 2. Return to the minimalist beginnings of the game, those recommended and endorsed by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America as Best Management Practices, the organization to which I am a member.  Without writing a book on the advantages and disadvantages of both schools of thought, my philosophy is how does our staff put out the best product in the least amount of productive time. I’ve read study after study on time management and prioritized where quality time should be spent to produce a quality golf course. I do not know which school of thought is correct, but I do know the membership and guests can certainly help keep this golf course pristine with just a small amount of forethought. We have tried to strike a balance between the wants and needs of members and guests; we also think today’s golf course meets that balance sufficiently. We are considered one the best golf courses in the state; we will continue to make this course better and your pleasure is our enjoyment.

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -
Food and beverages are not allowed to be brought to the golf course. When a tee time confirmation is received, it is clearly printed that alcohol, food and coolers are not allowed.  We employ many fine people who rely on food and beverage sales to make their livelihood. Please don’t embarrass us or yourself as you will be asked to leave if you bring food or beverage to the golf course, with no refund given.

The Allied Senior has been rescheduled at Wyantenuck for Wednesday, August 25th. ALL PLAYERS NEED TO REGISTER again for the event. No players were carried over from the previous date. The link to register is here.
The Allied Net Championship will be held at Waubeeka this year on Sunday, August 8th! Deadline to register is tomorrow, Friday July 30th at 4PM. If you wish to play you must register online. You can do so here. For those of you that aren’t playing, please keep in mind that you may play at another Allied Course. You must register to do this in the golf shop! If any course gets more than 4 requests I will do a lottery draw to see who will get their first choice!
Week one of the Ladies’ Chip and Sip was held this past Monday night! Fran, Tomas and myself had our hands full as 19 women took advantage of the putting instruction that we offered! After golf we all had an adult beverage to quench our thirsts!

The Adult Golf School is concluding today! 12 avid golfers of all levels took part. We covered all points of the golf swing beginning with grip and setup and concluded with some time on the course.
Each participant also had a brief session with our Trackman unit! I see some happy golfers in the near future!
Speaking of game improvement, I recommend using our Trackman 4. The Combine Test uses technology for your game from 100 yards into the green. The Trackman gives you a score depending on how well you hit the ball to a certain distance. After you see your score, you may realize you need more practice from one hundred yards in. And once again taking the Combine Test will let you know if you have improved. We are so lucky to have the Trackman 4 here at Waubeeka.
The Annual Member/Member is just around the corner! Get a partner and make a tee time. You may also make your own foursome. This will also be open to any women members that are interested!
The Club Championship sign up will also be going up this weekend!
The last of our Junior Golf Camps will begin in a couple of weeks. It is currently full but we will take names of any one that may be interested in signing up (no guarantees!) as an alternate.
Golfweek's Northeast Junior Championship sponsored by Cobra with Southern Vermont Health Care has been cancelled. Scheduled for August 22 and 23, this Championship was to include the best Junior Golfers up and down the coast. Revamped plans and perhaps a 3 day tournament in 2022 are in discussions now between Golfweek, USA Today, Southern Vermont Health Care, Cobra and Waubeeka. Stay tuned.

Paul Quinn of Springfield shared his thoughts on the recent passing of Joe Girardi, former teacher/coach at Drury HS. "Sorry to hear of Joe Girardi's passing. He and Jim Whitney were my co-op teachers when I did my student teaching at Drury. My class (1973) was the first to be required to do 16 weeks of student teaching. I taught 8 weeks under Mr. Whitney and Joe for the second 8 weeks. Both were great guys to work with.”

From the useless stat department we find the pitching line of Zack Britton of the Yankees from a recent game. 1/3 of an inning (he got one batter out), he gave up 3 runs, 2 were earned, he walked two batters and was credited with a hold. He may have an incentive clause in his contract for "holds.”
In the " What's Next Department": There is a strong possibility that a typhoon may hit Tokyo a few days into the Olympics.

Two jockeys were fined and suspended at Monmouth Park recently for using their crops, whips, on their mounts.  A New Jersey law now prohibits riders from using their crops to motivate their horses. The riders will still carry crops to help steer the horse from danger and for the safety of the other horses and jockeys.
It was a slow news week and my computer does not work in wet weather.

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf
 You are invited to attend the art installation of Jose Criollo on Sunday, August 1 at 11 AM. Criollo specializes in metal; his Facebook page is titled ‘ART WITH METAL.’ Jose designed a guitar especially for our golf course and chose the Route 7 location specifically with the thought of reaching more individuals. He also has a piece at the North Bennington Show currently ongoing, titled ‘Lonesome George’, an extinct turtle from the Galapagos Island in Ecuador.

Cameron Champ won his third career PGA victory with a 15 under par to capture the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, MN! Louis Oosthuizen and Jhonattan Vegas tied for second place, two shots back of the winner.
The Men’s Golf Tokyo Olympics team debuts (Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of EST, so the matches began at 6:30 last night, tee times listed are for tonight’s USA team) today thru Sunday, represented by Justin Thomas (9:25 PM), Collin Morikawa (7:25 PM), Xander Schauffele (9:14 PM) and Patrick Reed (7:41 PM). Bryson DeChambeau, who has been replaced by Reed (no practice round, arrived Wednesday), tested positive for COVID last Sunday, just before boarding the flight for Tokyo. Coverage is live from 6:30 - 10 PM. Extreme heat and humidity in Japan now, 95 degrees every day! Austrian Sepp Straka leads the field with a Round 1 score of 8 under 63! Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed are tied for 12th at 3 under. Justin Thomas had 18 pars in a row, an extraordinary feat. Quote of the day from Justin Thomas,

LPGA Tour - Australian Mingee Lee overcame a 7 shot deficit last Sunday to win the season's last major in a playoff over Jeongeun Lee6, who had what seemed like an insurmountable 5 shot lead over her nearest competitor on Saturday night. The sudden death playoff was Lee’s first major, Lee vs. Lee6 at The Amundi-Evian-les-Bains, in France. Neighbor Lydia Ko soaked her buddy with champagne to cap the celebration! Tomorrow the ladies will be at the ISPS Handa World Invitational, Galgorm, Northern Ireland.
Representing The women’s Olympic golf team, beginning next Wednesday, August 4 - 7, will be sista's Nelly and Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang. All matches, men and women, will be played at Kasumigaseki CC in Kasahata, Saitama, Japan, about 20 miles east of Tokyo.
