FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

We are grateful for every tournament, outing, wedding and celebration that is held at Waubeeka.  Some of these events require a great deal of work and planning.  Today, we want to say ‘Thank you’ to the players who took part in the Berkshire Family YMCA golf tournament. Those who played understood the rain-soaked conditions and were respectful of the golf course; your actions did not go unnoticed.  The staff at the ‘Y’ worked extremely hard to make everyone happy--and they did.  Special salute to Jessica Rumlow, Executive Director, whose tireless work and communication skills made everyone feel welcomed and appreciated.  We hope the ‘Y’ raised enough money to support their many youth programs!

19 year old Michael Thorbjornsen captured the 113th Mass Amateur scoring 18 birdies in 30 holes to defeat Matt Parziale 8 and 6 at Brae Burn CC.  Parziale shot 67 in the first 18 hole match and was 6 down at the halfway mark of the championship!  The only other teenager to ever win this event was Lee’s Jim Salinetti.

Twin Bridges Championship, The Symetra Tour, which is the official developmental circuit of the LPGA tour, will feature 144 future stars coming to Pine Haven CC, tomorrow through Sunday in Guilderland, NY.  If you go, keep an eye out for Rachel Rohanna, Karen Chung and Ruixin Liu.  They are grouped together and tee off Friday at 1:47 PM.  Get there early in the morning to watch all the action!

‘This driver sucks’ sayeth Bryson DeChambeau at last week’s OPEN!  Someone please give him the book ‘How to win friends and influence people’.  Cobra/Puma has probably invested millions in Bryson DeChambeau, given him the best shafts, heads, angles and lies.  Not the best way to strike up a conversation with your manufacturer!

Octogenarian Nancy Daignault made her second career hole-in-one last Saturday on Hole 16 in the Women’s One-Day Member/Guest Tournament, MONOPOLY!  Lucky for her, the Waubeeka local rule states that, “You make a hole in one, we buy YOU drinks.”  It was this season’s second hole in one at Waubeeka!

Only 8 home games left in the North Adams SteepleCats regular season.  Bring the kids down to watch some real good baseball.  It will be the best 5 bucks you’ll ever spend!  Good hot dogs, too!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Challenging is my new favorite word!  Hard to believe we had a Glow Ball Tournament Friday night, a Ladies Member/Guest Saturday and the BFYMCA Charity Tournament on Monday, all in the midst of 3.5 inches of additional rain!  Someone upstairs is certainly coordinating our events!  There are spots on the fairways and approaches that we have not been able to mow in over a week. I guess we are lucky that we have many cart paths and the condition of the course is still pretty good.  More than likely, until we completely dry out, we will have CART PATH only.  We appreciate everyone who drives slowly and carefully to avoid damaging our beautiful course.

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -

Back by popular demand:  Prime Rib, Rib Eye Steaks, Shepherd’s Pie and Chicken Parmesan on the same weekend!  Please call for reservations, 458-6000, as we keep running out.  See our Specials menu here and our regular menu here!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The Allied Net Championship registration is now open and will be played here at Waubeeka on Sunday, August 8th. Those that aren’t playing are eligible to play at other Allied courses. You must make your request in the golf shop. Any course with more than the allotted spots will have a lottery for those times.

The Member/Member will be held on Sunday, August 15th. Players can pick their partner and make their own foursomes for that day. Tee times can be made anytime between 7 AM and noon.

The Ladies’ Chip and Sip will begin this coming Monday, July 26th. 6 to 7PM is the instruction period for golf; after 7, we begin the instruction for drinking some adult beverages!

The free junior clinics continue every Sunday from 1-2 until September 8th. If you know of any juniors, get them down here!

The Club Championship is just one month away. Jamie Gaffey is looking for a threepeat!!! Can he pull it off? Stay tuned!

The Women's One Day Member/Guest Tournament played last Saturday was a shamble format recording two gross and two net scores per hole. The tournament was captured by Jane Brown, Laura Couch, Vicki Richardello and Mary Ellen Burt.  Second place went to Judy Willette, Julie Arnold, Anna Robertson and Dot Houston.  First net went to Deb Corkins, Cindy Deblois, Angie Lingner and Jean Rice.  Second net was won by the team of Sandy Bourdon, Kathy Schmidt, Kay Goldstein and Kim Murdoch. The biggest winner of Monopoly was the team of Judi Willette, Julie Arnold, Dot Houston and Anna Robertson. They had over $300,000 worth of properties and cash!!!

Naturally,  ‘shot of the day’ was Nancy Daignault’s hole-in-one on #7!

The YMCA Golf Tournament was a resounding success with much capital raised for the youth programs at the YMCA’s in Pittsfield, North Adams and Bennington, VT.  The team of Brad Horth, Jay and John Barbarotta and Gary Bianchi won the low gross honors with a 58. Low net went to the team of John Quinto, Eric Pratt, Bill Robinson and Kevin Quinto with a 54.7.  Closest to the pin winners were:

GLOW BALL - Oh what a night!! Great song and some great golf conditions!  And oh what fun we had!  The team of Jake Phillips, Seth George, Aaron Rothschild and Brandon Burnham won, while the team of Chris Koch, Tom Nowlan, Mike Picard and Josh Fortier came in second by a match of cards!  We may do another Glow Ball Tournament in September.  Again, we will limit the field to 36 players, 9 foursomes!  We’ll keep you posted.

The Adult Golf School will be held next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday July 27, 28 and 29, 9 AM - 3 PM.  I have room for four more participants.  Included in your fee is instruction on all facets of the game.  A  trackman session along with on course instruction/course management will be taught.  Give the Proshop a call if interested, 413-458-8355.

Sim2 Driver, Sim2 Fairway, Sim2 Rescue, the SuperStroke putter grip….all played this weekend by American Colin Morikawa are in stock in the Waubeeka pro shop. Try a demo.  Let me take a look at your clubs and give you a trade-in price toward a new set.

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

This year's British Open (Yes, I still call it that) was a perfectly timed event.  The early start allows a sports fan like myself to cash in on the "exacta" of TV viewing.  Being able to watch a major golf tournament (yes I still call it a tournament) start to finish and still being able to transition straight to "America's Day at the Races" to catch the afternoon card at Saratoga is the exacta I speak of.  And...if there was a 7:00 MLB game on that night, it now becomes a “trifecta.”
Speaking of Saratoga, if you want to view the races from the new 1863 building at the clubhouse turn, and you have 44 friends that may want to join you for the day, I can get you the top room for $19,000.00.  My Waubeeka press credentials were not honored last weekend for entry.

Every pro shop staff member at most golf courses is often swamped with phone calls from John Q. Public inquiring about conditions at the course.  Is there a frost delay?  Oh, how long do you think it will last?  The best call that I ever got was from a resident on the Cranwell property a few years ago.  (She lived about 500 yards from our first tee).  It went something like this.
"Good morning this is the Cranwell Golf Shop, how can I help you?”  "Hi, is it raining up there?”  "How about  looking out your kitchen window and you tell me!”  At the time I think that I was ready for a week off without pay.

Stockbridge Golf club was under water and closed. Berkshire Hills was walking  and back nine only. Wyndhurst Manor (formerly Cranwell) was closed for a couple of days and "The Beek" has dealt with severe storms all week…  A call to Bas Ridge in Hinsdale was met with a "We are open, and carts are available.”  It pays to build a course on a gravel pit, without a river going through the property.  I played up there on Tuesday and I will, for the first time in a while, be able to get a second round out of the same pair of socks!

Would you rather be Giancarlo Stanton, DH of the Yankees, or Brian Cashman the GM of the Bronx Bombers?  Cashman signed Stanton to a multi year deal which starting in 2022 the Yanks will owe him $159 million over the next 7 years.  By spending this money on Stanton, the Yanks were not able to pursue Shohei Ohtani when he was being shopped around.  Stanton will soon be 32 years old.Let's look at the pros and cons of this deal.
Pros: When he hits a baseball he hits it hard. The operative word there is when!
Cons: He is past his prime. He cannot field, so he is a designated hitter.  He is afraid to run hard to not injure himself.  He doesn't make contact often when he is in the batter's box.  He strikes out consistently.  He has worn out a path from home plate back to the dugout, not after scoring a run.  I'll take Stanton’s job for sure because he will be cashing checks for the next 7 years.  Cashman could be heading for a soup kitchen.

A very good friend of many members of Waubeeka, Joe Girardi, recently passed away.  Joe was a three sport star athlete and later an educator and basketball coach for years at Drury HS.  He left North Adams to take an assistant superintendent of schools job in New York.  His best team at Drury included Tom Kately, Lee and Billy Reeves, Shaun Sprague, George Galli and point guard and Beek member Ron Goss. Great guy; he will be missed.

Plaques will be going up today on every sculpture.  Prices will be furnished upon request!

PGA Tour -
Congratulations to American Colin Morikawa on a Royal victory!  The two main ingredients enabling Morikawa to drink from the Claret Jug were good weather and good putting!  The 149th Open was played in excellent weather and the winning score at Royal St. George was the lowest ever recorded!
The Barbasol Championship, although overshadowed by The Open, went six sudden death holes on a smaller stage, but certainly no less exciting!  Seamus Power won his first PGA title when runner-up J.T. Poston hit his drive into the water on the par 4 18th hole!
Today the 3M Open takes center stage at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, MN!

LPGA Tour Ariya and Moryia Jutanguarn, May & Mo,  fired their 2nd 59 in this best ball tournament to defeat defending champs Jasmine Suwannapura and Cydney Clanton at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational.
The final major of this season takes place at Evian-les-Bains, France today.  The Amundi Evian Championship will feature 126 players, including # 1 Nelly Korda, as well as #’s 2 and 3 in the Rolex Rankings and 15 of the Tours 16 winners this year!

DEEP Thoughts -

So very sad to see many local courses affected by the rain when so many golfers have been enjoying the sport. This resurgence of golf can only be dampened by the weather.
