The Matriarch of Golf in the CT/MA circle celebrated her 90th birthday on July 1st.  Marion Hyde plays golf regularly, competes in many of the tournaments we all play in, and continues to cash!  Marion, you are our hero and we love you.  Here’s to many more tournaments, many more Black Velvets, many more country roads and many more happy, healthy years!

Did you sign up to try to win $1,000,000 or a scholarship?  Try (HERE)!

Twin Bridges Championship, The Symetra Tour, the official developmental circuit of the LPGA tour, will be featuring 144 future stars coming to Pine Haven CC, July 23 - 25 in Guilderland, NY.

The Match IV - They needed a ranger at the beautifully designed Jack Nicklaus course in Big Sky, Montana. It took 6 hours to play, but, after watching Brady and Rodgers hit 300 yard drives, DeChambeau hitting mulligans and Mickelson telling wild stories, the team of DeChambeau and Rodgers won the battle. However, 2 charities won the war with over 6.3 million meals raised and $2.6 million in cash donated! If you weren’t impressed by the golf…..you had to be mesmerized by the venue!  What a spectacular golf course!  Now on my bucket list!

Want a cart for the rest of the year?  Use it everyday.  Normal cost for the year is $799; take 40% off since we are mid way through the season!  Just $479.

Ever play golf in the dark?  Can’t wait to give it a try.  Next Friday we’ll tee it up at 8 PM, we’ll decorate our cart, bring a flashlight, use special balls that glow in the dark and enjoy a beverage around 10 PM!  $25 for members, $45 for non-members.   Openings for 4 groups remain.  Call the proshop 458-8355 before you get shut out!

I hope all these juniors we have been writing about will all enter “Golfweek’s Northeast Junior Championship sponsored by Cobra”!

Congratulations to Mt. Greylock RHS Athletic Director Lindsey von Holtz, on being named the 23rd President of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Directors. Jake Mendel of the Berkshire Eagle cracked the story last week, noting that von Holtz has been chair of the finance committee and vice president in the past.  She has been a staunch supporter of the high school golf team.  Best wishes to Lindsey von Holtz; she will do a great job as she leads the MIAA back to a normal schedule!

Watched the Steeplecats on the 4th and 5th of July: the pitching staff threw 18 innings of shutout baseball!   They are an excellent defensive team, saw 2 or 3 key double plays at critical times and the catching department is rock solid!  Get down to Joe Wolfe Field and watch these guys with the wooden bats. At home next on Monday!

Sincere condolences to the family of Tom Kinne, a pillar of the Great Barrington community and mentor to many youngsters throughout Berkshire County.  RIP.

Inquire about the Waubeeka Farmhouse and our Stay‘n Play Packages.

Butterfly Walk tomorrow, 1:30 - 3 at the end of Mason St., off Cole Ave in Williamstown.  Compare those to the butterflies on our 14th and 17th holes!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

8.0 inches of rain from Tuesday night until yesterday forced us to close the course at certain times many of those days.  The good news is Mother Nature marked off those areas that we want to address over this fall and winter!  Beats the cost of hiring a consultant to give us recommendations!  Most of the focus will be on Hole #9 going forward.  Some great ideas have been put forth!

Good Luck to one of my former members from Worthington GC, Jim Patterson!   He qualified for the US Senior Open being held in Omaha, Nebraska. He teed off this morning at 7:15 and goes again tomorrow at 12:45.  Knock ‘em stiff!

Bryson DeChambeau and his forever caddie Tim Tucker have played through their relationship. There was a new guy on Bryson's bag at the recently completed Rocket Mortgage tour stop.  Let’s not pass the hat for Tucker because his cut of Brysons' $11 million winnings for the last two seasons should keep him in sun screen and shades for a while.  Maybe Tucker told his man to lay up on a few too many holes, or maybe to not swing so hard at the ball on every shot?  The parting was reported as a mutual agreement of both parties. (I guess that is what a mutual agreement is!)

If anyone actually stays up late to watch NBA games I'm sure they noticed this in the Clippers - Suns game which saw the Suns send the LA club home early.  On the way to their respective huddles during a timeout Patrick Beverly of the Clippers shoved Chris Paul of the Suns in the back and the victim with the two first names flopped to the floor. "Pat Bev" got tossed and I'm OK with that.  Later Beverly issued an apology to Paul that confused me. "Emotions got the better of me ...wasn't meant for you.”  Ok, Mr. Beverly, here is my issue with your contrition.

1-Chris Paul is known league and world wide as CP3.
2-Paul had on his Suns' jersey at the time of the incident with the # 3 on the back.
3 Above the 3 on his uniform is the name "Paul".
4- Who was your sneaky shove meant for?  “YOUR WITNESS”

Always nice to catch up on the area golf news in the Berkshire Eagle presented by Richard Lord.  Ben Haddad of Lenox HS , who made the Waubeeka Newsletter last week for his play in the Pewter Cup, continued his fine play when he qualified for the Mass Junior Amateur with a 78 at the Agawam Muni layout.  I knew Ben when he was a sixth grade power forward on my Lenox travel team, and now I'd have to ask him for 3 shots a side.  Ben was never hesitant to get off his shot, and never met a shot that he did not like.  Another banner year is expected for Coach Dick Salinetti's Lenox squad next fall.  The medalist was an excellent player from Minnechaug HS who shot 75, Peter Wurszt.  Wurszt is grandson of Frank Oppedisano who played his hoops at Cathedral HS in the 60s and later captained the AIC team which included Jim Calhoun (yes that Jim Calhoun) Henry Payne and Pittsfields' Paul Procopio.  We always look for the local angle.  Speaking of Henry Payne, as Commerce came off the floor in the opener of a schoolboy double dip at the Springfield College Field House in 1964 after he went off for 64 points he passed his good friend Gene Ryczwicz of Cathedral and said "There you go, top that.” Gene came up short only scoring 51 in the nightcap vs Springfield Trade. (now Putnam HS).  FYI, games were only 32 minutes with no 3 point line.

As a safety precaution please check to make sure the hose clamp on your sump pump hose is tightened securely.  If you neglect to do this you may have to avoid an early shower.

In the "Hot Potato" department I give you this.  On Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 8:30 AM Dunkin Donuts in Lee MA was ............are you ready ?.......OOD !!!!  That would be OUT OF DONUTS !  Some summer camp bought every doughnut they had in stock.  I wonder if later in the morning the staff was instructed to replay to orders for the frosted treats "Sorry we are Fresh Out.”

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

Each sculpture on display at the golf course is for sale by the artist.  We will be happy to provide the history and the background on each piece and arrange for installation at your location.  You may contact the artist yourself with questions.  We are making our art trail bigger and better and more improved each week!

PGA Tour - 26 year old Australian Cam Davis outlasted Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann with a hole out bunker shot for par on the fifth extra hole at Detroit’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.  Bryson DeChambeau and his caddie, Tim Tucker split before the start of the event.   On hearing the news, Brooks Koepka took the opportunity to praise his long-time caddie Rick Elliott and declared last Friday ‘caddie appreciation day’!  DeChambeau didn’t make the cut and Koepka didn’t play.  Today marks the start of the 50th John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run, Silvis, IL.  23 first time 2021 Tour winners are included!

LPGA Tour Jin Young Ko won The Volunteers of America Classic by a single shot over rising star Matilda Castren.  Today marks the beginning of the Marathon Classic at Highland Meadows GC in Sylvania, OH.

DEEP Thoughts - Golf Magazine and golf.com, the same company that rated Waubeeka the #1 golf course in Massachusetts for conditions and value, published an editorial in its July issue about golfers enjoying the game more by taking lessons from a PGA pro.  We could not agree more.  One lesson with a PGA pro will allow you to enjoy the game so much more; basic fundamentals will be reinforced and the pleasure of a good strike will stimulate you to play more and derive greater enjoyment!  David DeNunzio, Editor-in-Chief of Golf Magazine states, “It doesn’t matter where you play or what club you're holding in your hands:  If someone hasn’t told you how to do it, you’re toast.  My advice: Latch on to one (PGA Pro), it’ll be the smartest investment you ever make in this game.”  Shouldn’t you be the best golfer in your 4some?  Just ask our PGA pro, Erik Tiele!
