FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

This morning all of us are out on the course working to eliminate the debris left by last night’s downpour.  The course should be in great shape by your tee off time. It may be cart path only….depending…..
These last couple of storms are knocking trees down and making the course almost too wet!  Hard to believe we are almost mid season, becoming difficult to keep up with mowing and equipment repairs.  Please remember on all par 3’s to remain on the cart path and remain on cart paths on Holes 13 and 15, especially in this wet weather.  Always try to leave the course in better condition than when you started your round.  Repair two ball marks on every green, replace your divot with the sand provided on the carts and do NOT litter.  It is an uphill battle to keep Waubeeka in the conditions we are accustomed to; this is a team effort!  Enjoy your 4th of July!

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -

Two time Club Champ Jamie Gaffey  qualified for the MA Public Links Championship at the Ledges in South Hadley shooting a 4 over par 76.  The Championship will be played at Westover GC in Granby, August 17 & 18!!  Good luck, Jamie, Break a Leg!(or better yet...don’t….just hit ‘em like you normally do here at the Beek….we know you’ll do well.)

Last week’s sweeps format was delete Hole #8 and #10. Chris Bourdon took the honors while Geoff Tatro claimed second and third went to Jamie Gaffey.  A three way tie developed for first net between Dave Rickert, Al Field and Al Stalker.

Donations continue to arrive for our bagroom worker Justyn Cowell.  The Wednesday and Thursday night leagues teed it up really high.  Thank you to all you wonderful league members, our members, friends and all the generous people who continue to be concerned!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

*A shout out to a couple of high school golfers who stepped up in class and tossed their bag tags into the ring at the Pewter Cup at BHCC over the weekend.  Nate Murphy of Taconic and Ben Haddad of Lenox took the top prize in the second flight with a 1 shot win over veterans Don Dastoli of BHCC and Dave Laravee of Ludlow CC.  Good for them. A couple of solid players and great kids.

* Did you know that when Babe Ruth signed a contract for $80,000.00 in 1931 a writer complained, “Why should Ruth make more than President Hoover?”  Ruth replied, “I had a better year than him.”

* During the 1989 World Series we all remember the earthquake that shook Candlestick Park and the city of San Francisco.  Areas of Frisco were shut down and many people were not allowed to go back to their homes until they  were deemed safe.  Joe DiMaggio wasn't one of the folks who was kept away from his property.  Because he was Joe D. he got a look away pass from local authorities and he was allowed to retrieve some belongings.  He came out of his families' house with a big garbage bag. The police even offered Joe some help with his "belongings.”   He declined.  In the bag was $800,000.00 that a mob pal of his had left there for Joe to hide. The man had passed away and Joe took the cash, tax free, and never let on to anyone about his score.  (Except your ‘Beek' scribe??)

*After reading last week's edition a reader from Feeding Hills MA, Joseph Patrick Fitzgerald, reminded me of a story out of the 1980s about Western Mass native Art Ditmar.  After a Budweiser commercial incorrectly named Ditmar as the pitcher that gave up the Game 7 World Series home run to Bill Mazerowski of the Pirates (It was Ralph Terry) he sued Anheuser Busch for $500,000.00 for tarnishing his reputation.   Nice retirement package.

*Our 2021 venture around the beautiful venue of Waubeeka Golf Links was a blast.  I actually parred the first hole for the first time in 20 years.  The only thing missing was my usual sighting of good friend, Jim Freeney.  In the past, our paths always crossed out on the course somewhere.  Jim must be teeing it up early these days.  It was nice to catch up with Mike and Erick and that sleeping security dog in the golf shop.  The golf cart crew had the fleet cleaned up and ready to go. Those kids  do a great job and I hope the members and guests aren't afraid to toss them a few bucks for their efforts.

Ditto bar and wait staff.

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

Thank you Karen Pedercini from Goodman’s Jewelers for making the lovely plaques at  the base of the sculptures located on Route 7.  The artist information and email address is helpful for observers and they may contact the artist themselves and perhaps commission a piece made especially for them!

PGA TourHarris English and Kramer Hickok gave all 10,000 fans a week to remember at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, CT.  It was a hard ticket to get, but worth twice the price of admission.  Eight holes after the planned conclusion, English finally defeated the pesky Hickok.  “I put some extra work in on the putting,” English stated after the win!  Today starts the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club.

LPGA Tour22-year-old Nelly Korda... don’t call her the best player never to win a major anymore!  Now you can call her the KPMG Women’s PGA Champion and the #1 ranked lady player in the world, the first American to hold that title since 2014 and 1 of 4 to represent the USA at the Olympics in Tokyo. What a difference a week makes!  Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Volunteers of America Classic being played at the Old American GC, The Colony, Texas.

One more thing, in addition to Nelly Korda, sister Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson and Daniele Kang will represent the USA at the Women’s Olympics in Tokyo!  We named the men’s team last week.

DEEP Thoughts

For those of you seeing me using a cane...no worries. I’m just in need of another new hip. It’s gotta hold up until November...And by the way, if you see my cane hanging around, let me know. I’m forever losing it!
