FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Beginning next Thursday, July 1, Massachusetts is having a VaxMillions Giveaway.  If you are fully vaccinated, 5 people, 18 or older will win $1,000,000 each.  5 people, 12 - 17 years old will win a college scholarship!!  More info (HERE)

It’s hard to believe, summer just recently arrived, but the days are getting shorter!  Don’t procrastinate...stop, smell the roses, book your tee time today with your family; you can still play til 9 PM!

The third Women’s Allied tournament of the year (Best Ball) will be held at Waubeeka on Monday.  80 gals will tee it up at 9 AM.  We are keeping our fingers crossed for a beautiful day…..isn’t it always a beautiful day at Waubeeka?

With the many tournaments being played recently, it’s important to mention pace of play.  A golfer can shoot the best score of his or her life, but if it takes 6 hours to do it, somehow the fun is gone. Some of the ladies I play with know what I mean when I say, “ the teapot,” or “the sugar bowl.”  When out on the golf course, if you turn around and see someone that looks like Kay (the teapot) in the picture below, you will know she has been waiting a while for you to hit….not good.  But if you turn around and see Sandy (the sugar bowl), you definitely know you need to speed up play.

The girls joke about this, but in reality, golf is so much more fun when played in a reasonable amount of time.  Be considerate of others.  Having a bad day?….let the people behind you play through and pick up when you know you are out of a hole.

Nick Petropulos and son Owen placed second in the under 16 year old category at the Allied’s annual Father-Son competition at Greenock CC in Lee on Father’s Day! They shot a 76 in a tough scotch format.  Congratulations!

Any Waubeeka member wishing to play in a Parent/Child Tournament throughout the state is very welcome to sign up.  A chance to play some nice venues including Renaissance, Shaker Hills and New Seabury.  More info (HERE)

The Supreme Court has ruled that student athletes may be compensated for their image and likeness.  Excellent decision; elite kids deserve a piece of the pie!  QUESTION: If college golfers get paid for their image and likeness, are they amateurs?

Green books - gone?  Last newsletter we mentioned the possibility. On Tuesday the PGA Tour Advisory president Rory McIlroy and the Council voted to ban the books, hoping to speed up play.  Let’s see what the PGA Tour Board of Directors has for input.  By the way, Augusta never allowed the green reading books!

Let’s support our Steeplecats as they make a second half push for a higher playoff seed.  The Cats are only 3 games out of first place and will be home this Saturday night at 6:30.  New recruits are still coming….

Former golf instructor, the late Jim Flick, said it best, “Golf is 90% mental and the other 10%........is mental.”

Opportunity seldom knocks twice.  High school coaches encourage your team, the #1, 2 or 3 boy or girl to get noticed by college coaches.  Maybe even open their eyes to what it takes to move to the next level.  You could change their life! Sign up here

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

I am very happy that school is out for the summer.  Each year we are so fortunate to be able to employ some great young kids and this year is no exception.  With our new co-workers we can get to those tasks that have been put on the back burner.  Route 7 is looking good with the lawn mowed and exposing the art along the highway.  The interior of the golf course is finally seeing the brush hog for the first time in a while!  We needed the rain, and the golf course shows it--make your tee time today!

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -

The restaurant will be closed Sunday from 4 PM for a 50th anniversary celebration.
We spruced up the menu a bit, great new look.   Check it out HERE.

We are featuring Shrimp Scampi and Calamari from 4 PM till close, but please call for dinner reservations, 458-6000.

Some area high school golfers are showing that they are not one-trick ponies!
The Lenox baseball team is having success in the Western Mass tournament after defeating two higher seeds in Smith Voke and Westfield Tech Academy. They will meet # 2 seed Hopkins tonight.
Max Shepardson, a 9th grader, was the winning pitcher in round one going the distance.  In the Tuesday win over Westfield, he had a  key clutch double to give Lenox a big run late in the game.  Two other members of the Lenox golf team are missing the playoffs because of injuries. Max DiGrigoli and Cliff Flynn are spectators at this point.

Max Shepardson and DiGrigoli are two of  the top golfers in Berkshire County and Flynn has more holes in one than I do.

A quick shout out to Mike Walsh of the Berkshire Eagle for his precise coverage of Tuesday night's game in Westfield.

Before that coverage the fact that these kids were over achieving was a well kept secret.  Every high school baseball game in my era was given top sports page placement featuring box scores. That was a good thing as long as I didn't go for the collar.

Something to make us hackers feel better:
How about PGA professional Brian Harman taking 4 putts from 5’5"?

Justin Rose +13 for the first two days of the Open.  (He was not available for the next two days.)

                                           *******
On last weekend's NBC telecast of the U.S. Open they announced that the 2022 US Open would be contested at "The Country Club".  Someone better inform the USGA that NACC is no longer available and the CC of Pittsfield does not have adequate parking.  Maybe Forest Park CC could host and they could park cars at Greylock Glen?  Stay tuned.
                                          ********
On Saturday I will be making my initial appearance at The Beek for 2021. I assume that my parking spot will be reserved for me once again.  I'll be running behind so there will not be a pick up at the A Frame Bakery.. sorry, Erik.

If anyone sees Mr. Deep heading for the public auction at The Orchards Hotel in Williamstown, stop him and relieve him of his checkbook.  Mike, it is too big to be moved.

Congrats to Ed Noel and the Zoltek family for their efforts to honor Frank's legacy by giving out the yearly award to area coaches for their passion for coaching.  Frank was a special guy and a great friend.  I recall back in 1965, I saw Frank while attending Sunday Mass at St. Francis.  He asked me if I was a member of the parish and I said no.  He was nice and took me to the rectory to join the fold.  Two days later I was on the St. Francis parish basketball team and headed to the CYC in Pittsfield.  My teammates were Fred Scully, Russ Durant, Joe Lipa, Billy Callahan and Dennis Bullett.   We had no trouble and took home the hardware.  Leave it to Zolt; always recruiting.

The recent passing of Pittsfield native Art Ditmar brought back some memories. The former MLB hurler for the Yankees and Kansas City was my hoop coach at Camp Sun and Fun in Hampden, MA when I was in 9th grade.  I remember his evaluation of my skills on the final report card as something like this "You have potential to be a fine high school player, but you need to work on your rebounding. Try to get more arc on your jump shot and learn to pass the ball to your teammates.”  "Pass the ball?”
The guest celebrity to give us a speech and sign autographs was Sam Jones of the Celtics.  After his talk he fielded questions from the kids.
I recall a young kid asking Sam "I saw you smoking a cigarette, why do you do that?”  Sam had an answer that I guess we all bought:  “It helps me keep my weight down in the off season.”  Every time I visited Myrtle Beach I would find Ditmars' name in the phone book, but I never pulled the trigger and reached out.  "Lary who?”

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

We are in the process of considering a walking trail to view all the art on display at Waubeeka.  Hopefully included will be an audio recording by the artist which will be triggered by persons walking near the piece; the artist will explain his thinking process about the work, his education and his future thoughts.  We’ll keep you posted!  Keep your eyes open as you drive down Route 7!

PGA TourHappy Father’s Day to Jon Rahm!  His new-born son, Kepa and his wife, Kelley, spent Father’s Day at Torrey Pines and Rahm emerged as the #1 golfer in the world, the 2021 U.S. Open Champion and winner of his first ever major!  Now vaccinated, the Memorial that he had to withdraw from behind him, mind at ease, 2 drained putts totaling 43 feet on holes 71 & 72 and wanting to be a role model for Kepa, all added up to a Father’s Day to remember!  It was a great leaderboard down the stretch….Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Mathew Wolff, Louis Oosthuizen and Collin Morikawa. Next door to us in Cromwell, Ct., today marks the start of the Travelers Championship.  Phil, DJ, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka will be there!   Tix are hard to get.

The men’s golf Tokyo Olympics, July 29 - August 1, will feature world #1 Jon Rahm representing Spain, while the U.S. will be represented by Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau.  The 3 medalists from the 2016 Olympics in Rio DeJaneiro, gold medalist Justin Rose, silver medalist Henrik Stenson and bronze medalist Matt Kuchar, all failed to qualify for Tokyo!  The women’s Olympic team, August 4 - 7, will be announced after this week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

LPGA TourNelly Korda, the younger of the 2 Korda sisters, shot 62 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday to capture the Meijer Classic by a single shot, her 2nd win of 2021!  Ireland’s Leona Maguire finished second.  This week is major #3, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club.  Both Korda sisters, Nelly and Jessica, will be looking to shed the label “best player without a major.”

DEEP Thoughts

It doesn’t appear that any local money is willing to put in the $60 million it's going to take to build a 120 room destination resort.  Maybe we’ll try China!
