Happy to see young friends this past weekend. Kyle Scadlock, James Heskett, Matt Karpowicz, Don Dagnoli, Mike Deep, Chris Galvin, Bobby Casey, Cole Teal and Danny Aronowitz….former basketball stars at Williams College with 2 of their biggest fans!
Jim Koppenhaver from Pellucid Corp., more or less the Bible on golf statistics, is helpful to us in that we are informed of trends in the golf industry. Our problem (Waubeeka) is we need to create our own market, a resort hotel on property, which will drive up rounds played in the 7 or so months we are open for business!
4 hours / 18 holes... 2 hours / 9 holes…. pace of play. Not allowing range finders, only for the majors--Why? Can range finders actually slow down play? What about green books? Why do the pros need them? All they do is slow down play.. Another time waster! Sometimes we are able to play in 3 and a half hours or less….and it feels terrific!
Tickets are available for the pasta dinner to benefit our bag room employee, young Justyn Cowell. Tickets will be sold at the door or you can call the restaurant to reserve your table. The dinner will be held this Monday from 4 to 7. Take out and dine-in tickets are $12 with all proceeds going to Justyn’s family! Lots of great raffle prizes! Cash bar.

Special Scramble in honor of our good friend the late Doug Milne will be held on Friday, August 6, here at Waubeeka, 1 PM shotgun start. Call the pro shop to enter 458-8355. Cost is $85 PP includes a cart and a little social fun after! Make your own team or we can put you on a team. Donations will be gladly accepted and will go toward the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
The Steeplecats are playing some good baseball. First baseman Brandon Hylton hit one of the longest shots ever out of Joe Wolfe field, 405 feet, a couple of nights ago. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, but chose to come to North Adams instead! The best $5 bucks you’ll ever pay for admission! Next game is tomorrow, 7 PM start. Those guys can also hit a golf ball!
The Brooks Koepka - Bryson DeChambeau back and forth continues this week at Torrey Pines; however, the only chance they have of playing together is on Saturday and/or Sunday! Last week we mentioned the ‘feud’, and said Jack and Arnie didn’t act that way. John Lanoue challenged that statement saying both were similar to Koepka and DeChambeau, but the wives of Jack & Arnie became good friends; hence the change in attitude!
Lumber prices are down 41% from recent highs, but still 3X higher than last year!

Thank you to those conscientious golfers who fix 2 ball marks on the green, every green! Everything is beginning to look so beautiful; we all must do our part to keep Waubeeka pristine!! We spent a good part of this week repairing sprinkler leaks; the budget calls for a new computed sprinkler system this season. Can’t wait!

FROM THE KITCHEN: TAVERN ON 7 -
The restaurant will be closed Saturday from 3 PM for a wedding. Yesterday, Governor Charlie Baker signed into law an order allowing us to sell beer, wine and liquor ‘to go’ when food is purchased from the restaurant. Basically, the bill extended to us the same opportunity as during COVID, until May 1, 2022. Find our menu HERE.

Congratulations to Nancy Barry and Russ Gilman, our new First Lady’s Trophy and President’s Cup Champions for 2021! Nancy shot a sizzling 75, net 65; Russ had a great round of 76, net 70; however, it took a match of cards over Jack Pieraccini, who fired an 82, net 70 for Russ to claim victory. Thank you to all of the participants that played!!
GLOW BALL - YES!! Tournament for July 16th, tee off 8 PM! I will have a sign up sheet going up this weekend. It will be a 9 hole scramble format and we will allow you to choose your own foursomes. The entry fee will be $25 for members and $45 for guests, included is the ball, prize fee and cart.
The Driving Range will be closed this coming Saturday, June 19th from 2 - 5 PM as there will be a wedding ceremony! Congratulations to the happy couple!
Practice early...Practice late! Again, keep in mind the Range Schedule which is Mondays 9:30- 8, Tuesday thru Saturday 7- 8 and Sundays 7- 5.
It appears that only Jamie Gaffey paid any attention to last week’s newsletter! We told all of our players to start aiming for the flags and on Tuesday, June 15th, Jamie did just that and recorded the first hole-in-one at Waubeeka this season on Hole #16. It was his second career ace! His playing partners were Ron Goss and Geoff Tatro. Congratulations!
We had 12 youngsters for our first Sunday Juniors Golf Series! We worked on the fundamentals of putting. If you know of a youngster aged 6-12, have them come over for a free one hour lesson, games and a snack afterwards!
The Men’s Two Day Member Guest applications have been steadily rolling in. If you plan on playing, get your application in ASAP. We will have two fun days of golf, a great dinner and a laugh or two along the way!

For basketball junkies, here is a heads up on a superior talent from Berkshire County. Keep your eye on Dion "Any Town" Brown of Vermont Academy. Dion played his youth hoops for Housy, a team consisting of Great Barrington kids and he was always the sharpest player on the court. Since he was in 5th grade whenever Lenox played Housy he would dominate the games in spite of being one of the shortest players on his team. When he got to high school, all of a sudden he was 6'3 and dunking without a running start. Dion would have had a record setting senior high school season at Monument Mountain but Covid killed that and Dion was off to VA and reclassified as a junior. He will be a senior next season. Google him and watch his 5 minute Youtube highlights. You will see why the D-I scouts will be spending time this winter in the VA gym. If you happen to run into Drury coach Jackie Racette or Hoosac mentor Bill Robinson ask them how happy they were to see Dion leave the High School ranks.
A former Vermont Academy point guard has done very well in the NBA playoffs, Bruce Brown, (no relation) after a year at UMIAMI. He is the starting PG for the NJ Nets. Brown played for coach Alex Popp Jr. at VA. Alex Popp Sr played his hoops for Chicopee Comp and later at Westfield State. Lenox native Bailey Patella played one year with Bruce Brown and will be returning to UVM as a 5th year senior in the fall. There is your hoop news brought to you by the "Beek" Newsletter.

Easy for the gopher and the bartender. "That will be $1. 50". In the year 2021 you may hear something like the following: "I'll have a Mosaic Bomb Neipa, a Wanderer, 2 8 Days a Week, an Odyssey #8 TDH TIPA and a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly for table 3 please". "Will $50.00 cover it?” How times have changed.

If you were watching the MLB network last week, believe it or not, they actually covered a Texas Rangers game. Serving as the color analyst was former first round draft pick of the Rangers and Pittsfield native Tom Grieve. Tom also served the Ranger organization as a GM and is a member of their Hall of Fame. Grieve graduated from Pittsfield HS in 1966.

Yes, that was Mike Bechard of Springfield who qualified for the Mass Am. at Wahconah CC last week. Mike's dad , also Mike , was the former PGA pro at Greenock CC in Lee. I'm told that Mike Jr. has a younger sister who is a top notch player, also.

I played two years of varsity baseball in high school and never came close to hitting a home run. But if I ever had the opportunity to touch them all, I would have definitely touched them all. Ke'Bryan Hayes of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit one in the seats and neglected to touch first base on his way to home plate. Sorry, you are out and it counts as an 0-1.

Twirling Mirrors, a work from the gallery of the distinguished artist Richard Pitts, adorns the entrance to our restaurant, Tavern on 7. Pitts, a professor of Fine Arts at The Fashion Institute of Technology, is over 80 years old and shoots below his age frequently! If you’d like to play a round with this likeable man, or see some of his other works, drop us a line.

PGA Tour -
22 year old South African Garrick Higgo got his first PGA Tour win in only his second start at the inaugural Palmetto Championship at Congaree with a final round 68, beating 6 others by a single shot after 72 holes! Chesson Hadley, who finished in a 6-way tie for 2nd place, had a 2 shot lead with 3 holes to play! The other 5 second place finishers were Hudson Swafford, Doc Redman, Jhonattan Vegas, Bo Van Pelt and Tyrell Hatton.
Jon Rahm has been cleared to play in this week’s major, the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Rahm had a 6 shot lead before being forced to withdraw at the Memorial. Phil, who will turn 51, is the oldest ever major champ to play in a U.S. Open, and more bettors have taken Phil to win at 50-1 than any other golfer! Justin Thomas and DJ are favorites beginning today at 1:36 PM. Hope Brooksy and DeChambeau are paired on Saturday or Sunday. If there is a playoff, the format will be a 2 hole aggregate, then sudden death! No more 18 holes on Monday!
Monday, we will know which 4 players will represent the USA in the Tokyo Olympics….play well this weekend! |
LPGA Tour -
Matilda Castren, Finland, became the first ever winner from that country in LPGA history The Mediheal Championship winner held off Min Lee by 2 shots. Today starts the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give after a year off due to COVID. The ladies are in the Great Lakes State, city of Belmont. Past champions Brooke Henderson, Mirim Lee and Lexi Thompson are headlining the field. |
DEEP Thoughts
So happy to see many happy golfers enjoying themselves, smiling, having fun and appreciating the effort put forth by the grounds crew, the pro and the restaurant staff! The friends made here by people who never met until playing golf will last their entire lifetime. Worth the price of admission!
