Watching Phil Mickelson win the PGA tournament last weekend was amazing...the oldest PGA professional at age 50 to win a major! It doesn’t surprise me that everyone loves Phil. A story heard recently about the course at Kiawah….a good friend of ours, Rob Cella played Kiawah a while back. At the time he was a 3 handicap and was paired with another golfer; he, too, a similar 3. They thought perhaps they would play the back tees to get the full benefit of playing the course. The starter suggested they not do that. “Play these tees,” he said, and proceeded to tell them that if either one of them broke 80, they could play the course for free the next day. Cha….ching! No freebies there.
For those of you who don’t subscribe to Facebook...another comical story about Phil’s victory. Apparently, his sister, Tina Mickelson, and his mother Mary were watching Sunday’s round on television and naturally were quite concerned with what might happen. Tina received a text from their mother stating…Tina, text Philip and tell him to just par in. Don’t hit bombs or activate calves. Just par. They will have to catch him. He won’t listen to his mother. Do you text him? Hurry!
Tina’s answer….I’ll text Tim. He’s the only one Phil is listening to today…..

Thank You Williamstown volunteer firefighters and all local firefighters, EMT’s, police officers and everyone involved in bringing last week’s wildfire on Pine Cobble under control and making all of us feel safe! One Williamstown volunteer firefighter is a student at Williams College; Grant Gattuso ‘23. Grant, who wants to be a doctor, is the son of one of our former members and wonderful person, Matt Gattuso. Read what the Williams Record had to say about the wildfire here.
All firefighters, police officers, first responders, health care workers, nurses and doctors deserve a ton of thank you’s and heartfelt appreciation from each of us. Princeton Athletic Director Mollie Marcoux Samaan has been named the 11th LPGA Commissioner! Maybe Princeton’s current golf coach, Erica Desanty, former instructor at Waubeeka, will move up to AD at the Ivy League school?
Last Saturday, our Annual Ladies’ Spring Classic was held on a beautiful day with 96 women playing. Competition was tough….scores were relatively high. Apparently, the course is more challenging than many thought. Nevertheless, those of us who didn’t cash enjoyed the day. What a pleasure it was to reunite with friends after not playing last year. It isn’t surprising that tournaments this year will be oversubscribed. Don’t forget…..our annual Fall Classic will be held on Saturday, September 25th. Mark your calendar and sign up early!
The Spring Cup coronation of Champion will be held today right here at Waubeeka. Scores have been close…..depending on what happens today…..it’s anyone’s guess as to who will win. Good luck to all!
Next Men’s Allied golf event is the Father-Son Tournament at the Donald Ross designed Greenock CC on Sunday, June 20th. Signup deadline is Friday, June 11.
Next Women’s Allied is June 21 at Wahconah. Signup deadline June 3.
Women’s Golf Day is next Tuesday, June 1. WGD is bringing more opportunity and unity through golf to all women. This Tuesday afternoon between noon and 4, any women who has never been to Waubeeka may use our Big Mountain Driving range free, play 9 holes free, dine in our restaurant for 10% off and all purchases in the pro shop will be discounted 10%.
As a special treat, for the Tuesday Night Women’s League, we will have a special prize for closest to the pin winners on every Par 3.
If you love the game, the BEST place to improve is our Big Mountain Driving Range. Make it a point to stop by at least once a week. Take one lesson with our pro, and practice the swing correctly! Bring a friend and have a cocktail after!
Doug Milne was a wonderful friend to many people. He was an avid golfer, loved clubs (both musical and golf related) and club designs, played a great guitar and sang songs we all enjoyed so much. Everyone loved Doug, who with his brother Gordy, grew up in Dalton. We are having a memorial tournament for Doug, who passed away Nov. 15, 2019. Save the date, August 6!
Thank you to members Gary Urquhart and John Martell, who donated 5 lovely framed photos to us about the experienced golfers of days gone by! Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Walter Hagen and Ben Hogan. They are displayed throughout our clubhouse! Such a thoughtful gift for all of us to enjoy!
Looking for input…..when a tournament is played should each individual player post his or her score, or should the pro shop post the score? It is done differently at many clubs….but certainly scores need to be posted.

We have top dressed all greens this week. One of the pond hawks (an aeration system) is up and running in the pond between Hole 11 and 15 and creating a better looking venue than we have seen in many years. The crew is going to spend a lot of time weed eating and brush hogging the wood lines all next week.

#togetherwewin! #missionaccomplished! Effective Saturday, all restrictions throughout the golf course have been lifted! Great news for all of our booked weddings, rehearsal dinners, outings and golf tournaments! We will still be vigilant, careful, safe and a heck of a lot happier! Call us for your next large party!
Laws in MA have changed. But….we are asking those who are not fully vaccinated, to still wear a mask when entering the club house or pro shop. This is just a common courtesy. Until we are all safe, it is the best protocol to follow for your safety and for the safety of others.

The Ladies’ Spring Cup matches are concluding today and we have the honor of hosting the final event today. Vicki Richardello, Nancy Barry, Sandy Bourdon, Linda Lewitt, Debbie Corkins, Kay Goldstein and Anita Hodgdon were the players this year for our team.
The Ladies Spring Classic was held this past Saturday and we had 96 players take to the course. They had a great day on the course followed by a fantastic meal!

PGA Junior League sign ups have begun...go to the PGA Junior League website and register for Team Waubeeka, ages 13 and under. Here’s the deal. We will have a weekly practice on Wednesdays at 5 PM for an hour and play on Sunday afternoons. We are currently working on traveling to CC of Pittsfield, Taconic, and possibly Greenock and then we would also host everyone here! This is a great opportunity for all beginning golfers. Total cost for the year is $175.

The Crumpin-Fox Club was the venue for last weeks' U.S.OPEN qualifying and to say the least, there were some players and shot makers in the field. Armed with my expense check from my editor @ the Beek Newsletter, I ventured up to the Fox to check out the action. It was nice to see my name on the wall without too much dust on it. I haven't been a member there since the early 90s. (That is the 1990s) My locker, with an old pair of socks, is still intact.
I had a great lunch, but, as usual, they would not take a check from me for payment.
A 3 under 69 was posted by Mike Martel of New Ipswich NH (I love their clams).
Jeff Curl, son of former PGA tour player Rod Curl, of Alabama was second with a 70.
Will Lodge, who is a student at Deerfield Academy, and has the Fox as his home course, won a one hole playoff to qualify for the next stage.
Always looking for the local angle, the medalist Mike Martel plays a lot of golf in Nashua, NH with Jim and David Petropulos, the older brothers of Nick Petropulos of Waubeeka.

NYRA has suspended trainer Linda Rice for 3 years. Always one of the leading conditioners on the New York circuit, Linda was not punished for any doping issues but was involved with some other violations. You can google her for more information.
Recently she has entered some horses at Finger Lakes in upstate NY. (Not a NYRA track, I guess)

Albert Pujols has found a home with the Dodgers. I am very pleased to see he is still going strong. Albert is a great guy and still has some gas in the tank. Retired MLB pitcher Chris Capuano (Friend of this keyboard) of West Springfield played with Albert in the 2001 World Cup on Team USA. As you know we always look for a local angle.

Could someone at CBS Sports please inform the CEO that there are more than two pages of a leaderboard. On the coverage of the PGA, if a player wasn't minus 1 or better he was MIA.
There are all kinds of pools and gambling sites that people are involved with and CBS should realize that maybe that should be involved in their coverage? Not that hard!!

Western Mass PGA's Richy Werenski made a good showing at the PGA. He cashed for $ 47,000.00 and tied with Bryson DeChambeau. I saw Bryson's mug all over the TV for 4 days, never saw Richy. Hello CBS, are you listening?

Former Cranwell PGA professional John Wells of Lenox informed me that Ricky Fowler (BFF of Trevor Gliwski) made a bogey on the 18th hole on Sunday at the PGA. No big deal you say? That finish cost him a spot in the next Masters and British Open.

A report from Naples Florida on the recent hip replacement surgery of Greenock member Paul Mahoney was favorable and impressive.
Paul may have taken a wrong turn and pulled into Jiffy Lube to save some expenses because after 3 hours he was back home with some new body parts and a handful of meds.
He is doing fine. Paul was a participant in many tournaments at Waubeeka including all of the Frank Zoltek events. He says hello to all his friends in the Berkshires. |
A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf
Another new installation, Flame Dance,  comprised of welded and powder coated steel, created by Steven Brooks, is being planned for tomorrow around 3 PM! Artist Brooks has a summer home in Arlington, VT! The work stands 8’ tall and is priced very reasonably for a true lover of the work! Flame Dance would make a tremendous impact in a spacious green backyard!!

PGA Tour -
With younger brother Tim (his first ever PGA win with older brother) on the bag, Phil Mickelson, the 200-1 longshot, won the PGA Championship and the Wanamaker Trophy  (Waubeeka Pro Erik Tiele pictured with the Wannamaker Trophy!). Rickie Fowler finished 8th!! Neighbor Keegan Bradley has been at or near the top of the leaderboard very frequently this year. LPGA Tour -
Wei-Ling Hsu finished the Pure Silk @ Kingsmill Resort 13 under par, which was good enough for her first ever LPGA win over Moriya Jutanuagarn by 2 shots and 3 shots over 3rd place finisher Jessica Korda. Yesterday the ladies began at Shadow Creek, Las Vegas, for the Bank of Hope Match Play Event. Carlotta Ciganda, the 17 seed, birdied the last hole for seemingly a 1-up victory over 48 seed Sarah Schmelzel. BUT...wait… the LPGA assessed a loss-of-hole penalty against Ciganda for SLOW PLAY and awarded the match to Schmelzel!!
