FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

We are all looking forward to this weekend…...our second annual “Wow”beeka Tournament!  If you happen to not be playing in the tournament, you are still invited to come over, play a round of golf, shop for new clubs and balls (the vendors will be here!) and enjoy the great food (Calamari, Pot Roast, Chicken Francais) specials in our tavern.  Tee times are still available in the afternoon….check our website or call the pro shop 413-458-8355.

Today the ladies’ Spring Cup matches continue.  The Waubeeka team will be playing the Taconic team at Taconic.  Good luck to all!

Sincere condolences to our good friend and neighbor, Gerry Rhodes.  We know she is now with her husband, Linwood and we know she is beating him at her favorite card game, Rummy. RIP, Gerry.

Duncan Robinson stuck a dagger in the heart of all Celtic fans last Sunday including a contingent of Williamstown area followers who witnessed the proceedings in a 12% full TD Garden.  Two days later, on Tuesday, Duncan scored another 22 points to total 44 against the C’s in two days including the heartbreaker with just over 1 minute left in the game on Sunday! We think the Heat should pay Duncan $100 million when he signs his next contract or at least $20 million/year!  He is the quickest player in NBA History to make 500 3’s!!  He now makes the NBA minimum salary~~$925,000.  Just found out from Williams college assistant hoop coach Justin Sosinsky that Duncan has a podcast weekly called (Who would have picked that name) “Longshot”!!  Great and informative listening!  Maybe Duncan wants to build a hotel at Waubeeka?

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is threatening tour players with permanent expulsion from the PGA Tour if they join the newly contemplated Saudi Arabian Premier Golf League, which could threaten the PGA and European tours.

The Williams College Women’s Golf Team is making its 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament Championship appearance. After two complete rounds, the Lady Ephs are tied for 4th place with Centre College, trailing only George Fox U, Methodist and leader Carnegie Mellon.  First year Melinda Yuan’s 73 yesterday catapulted her into a tie for 12th place in the individuals, only 8 shots back of the leader with 36 holes to play!  The final round will be played tomorrow at Forest Akers in East Lansing, Michigan.

Lynn Jordan, thank you for the great rainbow photo last Tuesday night! Talented photographer!

Our Big Mountain Driving Range - Come over, for as little as $4 you can purchase a small bag of balls and enjoy yourself having some no pressure fun!  Use our 10,000 square feet putting green at no charge!  Enjoy a beer while you're putting!  Bring your date!  Have lunch or dinner at the Tavern on 7 before or after. With warmer weather, our outside dining area has spectacular views!

After you finish your round at Waubeeka, plan to visit the Williamstown Historical Museum across the street from the golf course.   They are open Saturdays, 10 AM - 5 PM.   The current exhibit is “Baseball in Williamstown;” familiar names include Cameron, Judge, Odell, Hosley, White, Gardner, Kelley, Danaher, Rudnick and Upton!

TaylorMade, set for its biggest ever profit year, has been sold to Centroid Investment Partners, a Korean Private Equity firm.  TaylorMade was bought from Adidas 4 years ago for $425 million and reportedly is selling for $2 billion!!

SCAMS -  Although this article is the end of my column, it is perhaps the most important for all of us.  We received an email from a dad who wanted golf lessons for his 2 children - the hitch, he wanted to pay us $500 extra with a credit card and send him a $500 Amazon card in return!  Please be suspicious of every solicitation through email or telephone.  Know who you’re doing business with and ask for advice from a third party you trust before parting with any money - PLEASE!!  It is terrible how people try to take advantage of others.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Our second green is now open and we have received raving reviews!  The entire course is ready for the upcoming “WOW”beeka Weekend!  We finished seeding rough spots and leveled the bunkers on 2. The crew has begun edging bunkers throughout the course.  Have fun everyone this weekend!

Mulch is still available for $35 a yard.

FROM THE KITCHEN -

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The President’s Cup and First Lady’s trophy qualifying ends this Sunday afternoon, May 16.  Match play net begins on Monday, May 17.  Last year's champions Al Stalker and Kay Goldstein have their names proudly displayed on our trophy rack and both have predicted repeat victories!  This year-long event should end no later than the end of Sept with the coronation of both champions.

The 2021 Berkshire Junior Golf Camp at Waubeeka, for boys and girls ages 7 - 15, dates have filled up fast. I have two openings remaining for my 1st junior camp which is June 22, 23 and 24.

Our second junior camp is now full and I have one remaining opening for the third junior camp set for August 10,11 and 12.

The first Berkshire County Allied was played last Saturday at Berkshire Hills.  Our members came back saying the course was in great shape!

Sunday Sweeps this week was delete your worst two holes. Gross was a battle between father and son and senior came out on top!!!  Dan Bourdon took home honors with a 64, Chris Bourdon took home second whileTodd Shafer claimed third!! Jerry Bush was this week's Net winner while Ken Hodgdon outlasted Ron Goss for second and third.

Not a lot of time to sign up for the PGA Junior League…..you snooze, you lose!

Starting tomorrow daily hours of operation for the golf shop will be 7am - 7pm. The driving range hours are the same as the golf shop except for Mondays which are 9am - 7pm and Sundays which are 7am - 5pm, so we can pick up balls and mow the lawn!

It was great to see many of you last Saturday at the Members Appreciation party!!!  Good Food, Good Music and Good Friends, what a trifecta! Now I want to add my golf game to that list!

News from around the corner, around the world, around the clock.

*Great to see the rain let up for a day so the Allied Four Ball could be played at Berkshire Hills CC in Pittsfield.. Some very impressive scores were posted.  Waubeeka was well represented and it is nice to see money going back to the home clubs who send players.

*The Sports Haven Betting Complex in New Haven, CT has recently changed hands. The gambling venue, previously known as Teletrack, sold for $6 million.  I was a frequent customer back in the 80s when I was looking to make an investment on some horse races.  I do recall my last time down there I spotted a North Adams legend making a wager at the windows.  None other than Tom " Champ"Champney made the trek from Berkshire County.  Back then there were not a lot of options and Teletrack was the horse betting mecca of the east coast.

*The votes are in: the Meatloaf version of "It's all coming back to me now" is the choice.

Maybe the Route 7 Grille can feature meatloaf, not on the menu, but on the stereo? To quote Mr Loaf, "I may be crazy, but I'm crazy about you.”

* Jana Sanden of the UCONN Huskies softball team has been named the Big East Freshman of the Year for 2021. This honor has not been awarded to a UCONN player since 1996.  Jana batted .393 with an .839 slugging mark.

Why did this news qualify for the "Beek" newsletter?

She is the granddaughter of MCLA 1000 point scorer Bill Sarmuk, who is a  close personal friend of Fred Scully and in spite of the fact that he never passed me the ball, he is a friend of this keyboard also. Jana must get her athletic ability from her Mom, Sandy, a native of Adams.

My mentor, the late Tom McShane of the late NA Transcript,  always taught  me to look for the local angles.

* Too bad that Drury HS does not have a JV baseball team...

Editor’s Note - Meatloaf is one of the specials all next week!

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

Earthen Dancer, our newest piece of art, is fun!  Spin it.  Buy it for your backyard!!  Each piece on display at Waubeeka’s Art Division is for sale; all you need do is ask!

PGA Tour -

All Rory McIlroy needed to win was a crowd of people!  After more than one year without a crowd and more than one year without a win, both those matters ended on Mother’s Day at Quail Hollow in the Wells Fargo Championship.  “Rory, Rory, Rory” chanted the people once again!!  Questionable whether Rory would even be able to play due to a recurring ‘pain in the neck’ problem, thinking about his mom Rose and his wife Erica and the first Mother’s day for daughter Poppy, everything seemed perfect for his 19th PGA Tour win!! Today, all eyes are at the AT&T Byron Nelson in McKinney Texas!  World #1, DJ, withdrew yesterday due to a recurring knee problem.  He may not make the season’s next major, next weekend, the PGA Championship @ Kiawah Island!

Bill Hadden’s road roommate and Walker Cup Captain, Nathaniel Crosby made all the right moves in Juno Beach, FL as the Americans defeated England and Ireland in the 48th rendition of the Walker Cup!

LPGA Tour -

Thailand’s own Ariya Jutanugarn became the first Thai ever to win the Honda LPGA at Siam CC in Pattaya, Thailand.  She was so emotional to win on her own turf, and more amazing, her fellow country ladies finished 1-2-3!!  The ladies are taking a break this week, traveling back to the USA!  Next week is the Pure SIlk at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg!

Twin Bridges Championship,The Symetra Tour, the official developmental circuit of the LPGA tour, will be featuring 144 future stars coming to Pine Haven CC, July 23 - 25 in Guilderland, NY.  Tomorrow, the aspirations will tee it up at the Symetra Classic at River Run CC in Davidson, NC.

DEEP Thoughts

“WOW!” We are all hoping for good weather, good food, good samples, good fun, good golf, and friendships made this weekend that will last a lifetime!!
