FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Hey, whose picture is that on the May Waubeeka Calendar?  Better pick up your free edition today while they are still available.  Lots of valuable information as the season progresses.  Beautiful photography!!

When you are in charge of a tournament, it poses many challenges.  If you are conscientious about having a fair tournament, you check out those that are playing, look at the ghin information, and look to see if scores have been posted.  Let’s face it…..there is social golf, when we play for fun, and competitive golf, where perhaps you aren’t playing for the shirt or socks you win, but the thrill of knowing you did your best and won.  So, if you decide you want to play competitive golf, please post your scores.  The Women’s Allied has suggested that at least 10 scores should be posted prior to a tournament. I think this is fair. And, I totally agree that if you haven’t posted scores, when in a tournament, you play scratch. I urge you all to play for fun, but if you intend to play in tournaments, post your scores!

Pine Valley, (N.J.), the number 1 ranked golf course in the world, voted last week to allow women members.  Yippee!!  Where do I pick up an application!  The times, they are a changin!  And they should be!

Checking the suggestion box the past 2 weeks; it’s empty!  We encourage your suggestions.  All ideas are welcome!

Our annual Members Appreciation party is our way of thanking you for your support throughout the year, not only on our course, but also for patronage in our tavern and in our pro shop. The Yale Whiffenpoofs, the world's oldest and best collegiate A Capella singing group will entertain from 6 to 7. They have performed for Presidents Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43 and Obama. Can't wait to see all members and spouses Saturday night!

The Waubeeka Spring Cup team competed last Thursday at the Ledges GC in South Hadley….yes, we played the entire round in the pouring rain, but had a blast!  Today we are at Crumpin-Fox GC competing against The Ledges team.  Looking forward to a sunny day.

The Walker Cup is being played this weekend in Juno Beach, FL.  Good friend Bill Hadden, who won the prestigious Crump Cup at Pine Valley at least twice, was road roommate of Walker Cup Captain Nathanial Crosby at UMiami! This is a link to this year’s Walker Cup.

Karen Ware,  wife of our renowned member Chris Ware,  frequents Waubeeka often. She was in the spotlight of the Williams College Sports Dept over the past season.  Nothing goes on in Williams Sports that does not get the okay from Karen.  Watch the well deserved video here.

The NFL held its draft last Friday night and there was no need for Jake Benzinger to be on pins and needles.  The former Mt. Greylock RHS standout had already signed a pro football contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He is attending their mini camp and will know in mid May if he is officially on the team. We are wishing him lots of luck! Also, we are sending his dad, John, best wishes for a quick recovery with his recent knee surgery.

Dottie Pepper’s new book, “Letters to a Future Champion: My Time with Mr. Pulver” is a great read!  George Pulver was a NENY PGA Professional, but, more importantly, a mentor to this 15 year old aspiring young lady!  Available at the Williams Bookstore on Spring St.

Women’s Golf Day Palooza!  Next week’s newsletter will provide details on how every woman can listen to Jack & Barb Nicklaus, Annika, get free swag from Titleist, Footjoy and ClubCorp!  It’s free, men can also listen!!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Thanks Mike!  One of our hard working staff, Mike Dilego, while raking in the parking lot last Friday, found this little guy a long way from home.  Michael gently picked him up and transported him near the ninth pond.  He figured it out from there!

Mulch is still available for $35 a yard.

We rented this  machine to add 32 tons of sand to the left bunker on the 3rd green. We also added another 33 tons of sand to other bunkers on the course.  Our new cart path on Hole #2 made with crushed blacktop will actually go around the back of the green.   We’ve also been busy setting up Glenn Zweygardt’s artwork called ‘Earthen Dancer’.  We fixed the hydraulic leak on one green with sod from the putting green.

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Happy Mother’s Day Special!!! 18 holes, cart and dinner $75!!!  Choice of Chicken Parm served with shredded Mozzarella, Rigatoni & Garlic Bread or Fresh Beer Battered Atlantic Cod, French Fries & ColeSlaw.

Are you looking to celebrate a graduation?  Book now!  Dates are filling quickly.  We can offer a wonderful menu and views to die for!

With spring around the corner, it’s time to enlighten our menu. We will be adding different selections every couple of weeks; our goal is to offer new and exciting choices.  This week we have added two items on our Specials Menu. Our homemade baked stuffed clams with lemon and tabasco will be making their debut; add a cold brew and nothing is better. There will be a traditional Greek Gyro with house made tzatziki sauce served on pita bread. The new flatbread features sweet Italian sausage, red bell pepper, and shredded mozzarella. Look for additional new items as the season progresses.

Beginning this week,  we will be offering 2-3 dinner specials that will change weekly with emphasis on fresh products. These specials will be offered 4 PM to closing Tuesday through Saturday. This week’s specials will be Fish & Chips, using fresh Atlantic Cod, served with potato option and cole slaw, and a  fresh fish sandwich on brioche with tartar sauce and lettuce. Also, Chicken Parmesan with Rigatoni. Scan our QR code with your phone to see our menus!

Saturday the restaurant is closed to the public as we celebrate our annual Members Appreciation party.  We will be serving a variety of  appetizers; shrimp cocktail, scallops wrapped in bacon, chicken skewers, and antipasto on a stick, to name a few. Cash bar.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any suggestions to improve your clubhouse experience.

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The Golfweek Northeast Junior Championship for boys and girls 13 - 19, non-college players will be held at Waubeeka Golf Links, August 22 and 23.  The tournament will be ranked by Sagarin and the Junior Golf scoreboard.  Any interested juniors looking to participate  can register by going to golfweek.com or click here. See our AD on page 63 in Golfweek’s Best 2021 this week!

The first “Play with the Pro Day” is Tuesday, May 11th.  You and two other members can choose the time and the 4 of us will go out for a relaxing round of golf, some storytelling and yes, a few laughs.   Afterwards, we’ll grab a bite to eat, have a drink and probably discuss the shots we made and those we missed. If you already played last season, please give someone else a chance; I will put your group on an alternates list should the slot not get taken. The sign up sheet is in the golf shop.

Members, please remember that a USGA handicap is available to you. If you are interested, please notify me in the golf shop and we will put you into the system.

This week’s Sunday Sweeps format was delete #2 and #11, two of the tougher holes out there!! Gross was won by Chris Bourdon, second place went to Todd Shafer and third developed in a tie between Jim Crews and Geoff Tatro. The net portion was claimed by John Dabrowski, second place was tied between Jerry Bush and Tom Degray while fourth went to Bill Molloy.

PGA Junior League sign ups have begun...go to the PGA Junior League Website and register for Team Waubeeka!!!  Ages 13 and under.  Here’s the deal.  We will have a weekly practice on Wednesdays at 5 PM for an hour and play on Sunday afternoons.  We are currently working on traveling to CC of Pittsfield, Taconic, and possibly Greenock and then we would also host everyone here!

Our Trackman unit is up and running smoothly!  I want to begin to make you a better golfer! Try the Trackman Combine! This is a great method to discover your weaknesses in your accuracy and distance control.  Download the new free Trackman Golf app here. Contact me to set up a lesson schedule.  Get better~~have more fun!

The one thing that I see too often when teaching is the idea of a “QUICK FIX”.  You can only get out of your golf game what you decide to put into it!  Necessary changes in one’s swing needs constant practice and repetition.  Practicing incorrectly can lead to disastrous results!  Make a commitment and stick with it.  Learning new skills or refining existing ones is a time consuming process that will test your resolve.  Having unreasonable goals or expecting immediate gains without putting in the work is a sure fire way to sabotage your enjoyment!

Could I please get some thoughts and prayers for my good friend, golf club repairman, and Berkshire County golfer, Fred Goerlach.  He suffered a setback during surgery!!!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

The Waubeeka Newsletter, The latest  news from around the corner, around the world, around the clock.

* Nice to see Richard Lord back in the Berkshire Eagle. He is the voice of golf in Berkshire County; in the words of Carly Simon, ‘Nobody Does It Better.’

 * A new commercial recently aired for Orbit Gum features Celine Dion singing "It's all coming back to me now." Watch here.  I wish they elected to use the rendition by Meatloaf. Watch here. Check them both out and let me know what you think.

* Pope Francis Prep of Springfield, Cathedral High School when I attended, sent their boys hockey team to Nebraska to compete in the D-1 National Championship.  During the competition they outscored their opponents 51-5 and took home the hardware. They beat a team from Chicago in the final, 3-0.

* The school recently announced the results of their Cardinal Fund Raiser and 4 different donors were in the $100,000.00 and above category.  Maybe they raised enough to reopen St. Joseph HS in Pittsfield.

*In the "we are getting old department" Johnny Crawford , little Mark McCain of The Rifleman show, recently passed away at 75.

* Is anyone beside me watching the show Big Sky on ABC?  If not, binge it!

* If you are a reader, be sure to put  "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt on your list.

*Spoiler alert: Jimmy Hoffa is not in The Meadowlands. The movie "The Irishman" was based on this publication.

* A Get Well Soon to Fred Goerlach from all his friends in Berkshire County and beyond.  He is recovering from recent surgery at Albany Med.  Fred plays out of Berkshire Hills and is one of the better players in the county.  When Wahconah High School had that exceptional pitching staff back in the late 70s and early 80s featuring Jeff Reardon, Jerry Orb etc, Fred was the catcher.  He is a valued friend of mine and, of course, Erik "Square Deal" Tiele.

Best of luck to all the Beekers in this weekends' Allied Four Ball. Let’s see, it is being held at Berkshire Hills and many of their members will be entered, so if you have any hopes of cashing in the net division, I hope that you take a couple for the road.

A Slice of Art - A perspective of art from the point of view of golf

Introducing Glenn Zwegardt, Kansas born and now a resident of Alfred Station, NY., he earned his BFA from Wichita State, his MFA from Maryland Institute of Art and today is an emeritus Professor of Sculpture at the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University.  He is internationally known and recognized as a member of the prestigious Berman Group, a cooperative of sculptors whose collective work spans virtually the entire spectrum of possibilities of “traditional” modernist sculpture!  We met Glenn this past Tuesday, he is a character!!  His work, soon to be unveiled at Waubeeka’s Art Division is a heavy steel, stainless steel, enamaled steel, cast ductile iron and granite work with an upper element that rotates 360 degrees.  Standing almost 9 feet tall and viewable from Route 7, Zwegardt’s piece built in 2015, will make a lifetime of happiness for it’s purchaser!

PGA Tour -

Our neighbor from Vermont, Keegan Bradley, was in a dogfight this entire weekend with 24 year old Sam Burns at the Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course, Innisbrook, Palm Harbor, FL., but, Keegan’s short 8 iron on the par 3 13th hole found the water and one double bogey later, Burns sailed to his first PGA Tour win!   Today, it’s happening at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC at the Wells Fargo Championship.

LPGA Tour -

Hyo Joo Kim won the HSBC World Champion in Singapore last week by overcoming a 5 shot deficit over Australian Hannah Green.  Poor Green had a one shot lead with two holes to play and finished bogey, bogey, for an unbelievable train wreck 69!!  Today the ladies tee it up in the Honda LPGA at Siam CC in Pattaya, Thailand.

DEEP Thoughts

Our crew worked so hard to make the golf course beautiful, and continues to do so! Its disheartening to see cigarette butts littering the course. Please be considerate, put your butts in your cart and dispose of them after your round.
