FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

According to the CDC, if you are completely vaccinated you are no longer required to wear your face mask outdoors.  Governor Baker has stated that All COVID restrictions are set to be lifted by August 1. Let’s stay vigilant by taking precautions whenever we feel we need to and let’s keep our fingers crossed….you’re allowed to uncross your fingers while swinging your clubs!

Huge THANK YOU to our members and friends who handled themselves perfectly in an unpleasant situation that developed Friday.  You may have erred, but you erred on the side of caution and with high regard for all of your friends.  Everyone is proud of you for putting our safety ahead of a game of golf!  You are very good people.  Please bring a guest anytime this year~on us!

We’re off and running…..and no, it’s not the derby.  The Waubeeka Spring Cup team is playing today at the Ledges in South Hadley.  We wish them well and we’re hoping the rain holds off...please, Golf Gods!

For those of you who may be “beginners” in this wonderful game called GOLF,  Naomi Nesenoff and Jenna Walkiewicz from MassGolf have created a wonderful video on golf etiquette.  I think you may enjoy it, especially if you sometimes have questions such as “Who goes first?” “Where should I stand?” “Am I playing too slow?”  “Am I allowed to pick up a short putt?” …..believe it or not…..you can in Match Play if your opponent says you can…..and YOU SHOULD! Watch here!

What is this PGA Player Impact Program (PIP)?  Should the top 10 players that generate the most ‘likes’ on Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, Tik Tok etc. divvy up $40 million pot between them?  Golfweek magazine (they’ll be here for the Northeast Junior Championship August 22 & 23) broke the story and later the PGA Tour confirmed it!  Just my opinion…..but don’t they make enough money already?  If they have an extra 40 million hanging around, why not boost our junior golf programs!  Forget about it….

April showers…...bring May flowers!

David Feherty, the golf channel comedy show host, a hit for 10 years, has been cancelled.  A two fisted drinker, while playing at the Houston Open back when hotel guests were given keys, got a penalty for marking his ball with, yup, a hotel key!   Feherty will remain at NBC as a golf commentator.

Monday, world traveler and sculptor Jo-Ann Brody completed installation of her work titled “Iconic Greeting from Three Sisters” at our art division between the 5th tee and 7th green.

Brody is a teaching artist with Young Artists NY at several NY City schools. JoAnn has exhibited her works at Ceres Gallery, NYC,  the Collaborative Concepts Farm exhibitions in Putnam County, NY,  the Hammond Museum and Hudson Valley MOCA both in Westchester County, NY.  She will be a part of North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show this summer and will have an exhibition January 2022 at Ceres.

Brody did a two month artist residency in Kyoto, Japan and lived and worked in Rehovot, Israel, for 3 years.

Each art piece at Waubeeka is for sale for the benefit of the artist, as well as a small stipend given to us for selling the piece.  What a great Mothers Day gift!

Mike Whan, former LPGA Commissioner, has resigned that position and been named the new CEO of the USGA!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Please DO NOT toss cigarettes on our golf course.  Put them in your pocket, put them in the cart,  but PLEASE do not throw them on the golf course.

All tees and approaches have been fertilized and it’s hard to tell when we aerified our greens!  We’ve distributed yards of the mulch into our flower beds around the clubhouse and the few beds on the course.  We do have extra mulch for sale which we will load in your truck, $40/yard.  Call pro shop 458-8355 and schedule a time to pick up.

WE HAVE FILLED ALL SAND TRAPS AROUND HOLE #2.   It is starting to look very nice.

Big congratulations to my assistant Keenan Pallos, an excellent hockey player.  His team traveled to New Hampshire this weekend and won first place in the tournament.  He also was awarded best goalie!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Please purchase your alcohol from our restaurant.  It is illegal to bring liquor to the golf course.  Every drink you bring here affects the employees, many of whom work for tips.

FIFTEEN DAYS until “WOW”beeka Weekend.  Contact me immediately if you have NOT ordered your shoes. The shoes will be arriving here next week so get your order in.  Practice rounds are $30 walking for all guests.

I would like to congratulate Laura Thomas  on her summer internship with Pratt and Whitney!  Laura has worked the past three summers for me in the golf shop. She will still be seen in the shop on occasion during the summer, but a little less frequently than before.  If you happen to see her, wish her the best!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

I would like to thank the 3 people that noticed that my article, intended for last week's newsletter was missing from Edition # 2, 2021.

After a call from the editor of said newsletter, I realized that I neglected to send it along, thus far missing my first deadline ever.

So, to those three concerned, loyal and dedicated readers, do not send flowers to the house and you don't have to retrieve your dark suit from the cleaners.

If you are reading this on April 29 my memory is getting better!
With apologies to all our female readers the big take in this week's newsletter deals with horse racing. You may fast forward to the next topic if you would like.

Most Americans are racing fans at least on the first Saturday of May in Louisville KY. There are always Derby house parties where people attempt to convince the other guests that they know who is going to win.

If you are looking to acquire tickets at Churchill Downs for the big day, there are some still available. There is the $60.00 type that will allow you access to the grounds, or you can upgrade your seats anywhere from $500.00 to $3,900.00 if you want to watch from Millionaire Row. You might catch Tom Brady up there with his offensive linemen as his guest.

If you want a cheat sheet for the race and the entire card you can go to e-ponies.com and invest $20.00 for a computer breakdown on the stakes races.

I would also recommend checking out stevebyk.com for a great view of the day's races, the charge $ 0.00!

As for a possible winner from this keyboard, I do have a clue.  All my futures pool bets are no longer valid because those horses must be in the witness protection program. If you are getting 35-1 or 70-1 it doesn't mean squat if the horse doesn't get into one of the 20 stalls on Saturday. No refunds on Future Pool bets.

I've been prognosticating Kentucky Derby races in various publications since 2004.  How successful have I been, is a topic for another day~~let's look ahead.

My public may be awaiting my choices for the 2021 classic, simply so they can eliminate my selections and go from there.  So here we go:

#1 Known Agenda is my top choice at 6-1 morning line. Todd Pletcher trains and if any rider can figure out a trip from the inside post it is Irad Ortiz Jr.

# 14 Essential Quality cannot be overlooked and will be the post time favorite.

# 17 Highly Motivated, lost to my second choice in the Blue Grass by a neck and will be 3 times or more the price at post time. Did I mention that Chad Freakin Brown is the trainer and Javier Castellano rides?

Possible underneath plays to complete vertical tickets and possible bombs :

#10 Midnight Bourbon, Money Mike Smith is not in from the west coast to work on his tan.

#15 Rock Your World.  If Joel Rosario is on a horse, that horse has a chance.

Half of the field has 0.0% chance of winning. The owners of these horses are there to party and impress their clients and to say they had an entry in the Kentucky Derby, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Whether you are in Louisville, at a house party, or at your local OTB parlor, good luck and enjoy the day. The safest place may be at a house party because you will not have immediate access to an ATM.

Please arrange to grab an early tee time on May 3rd, I don't want Mr Deep to think that I am taking business from his golfing venue.

Whenever there is a big day of racing, I sincerely miss consulting a good friend and excellent handicapper the late Craig "Teapot" DeBlois, who we lost a few years ago.

******

Tough loss for Padre pitcher Yu Darvish this week vs the Dodgers.

He gave up 1 hit and struck out 9 and lost. I would rather get shelled early and avoid the stress.

**

I helped a friend with a tag sale at his crib this past weekend because he is moving to Florida. A few observations from my experience:

*Old golf clubs and 2 wheel pull carts always remain after completion of the sale. (Buy new and support your pro shop)

*People will buy anything, except old golf clubs and 2 wheel pull carts.

*If you have open liquor bottles people will buy them but legally they can't be sold. The homeowner found a way to satisfy the requests of the shoppers.  He sold them a pencil for $10.00 and because he made friends with these folks he gave them a complimentary bottle.

*Some customers made it a point to not leave the sale until their budget was exhausted.

* Total take for the two day sale.....$1,600.00.

* Cost to have someone haul away the unsold items........$700.00

That concludes our consumer report of the week.

PGA Tour -

Australians Marc Leishman & Cameron Smith were the unlikely winners of the Zurich Classic (love the format) in a sudden death playoff against 3rd round leaders Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel!  Our buddy from South Hadley, Richy Werenski who teamed with MA native Peter Uihlein, finished 1 shot shy of being in that playoff for the championship (they jumped 15 spots on Sunday)!  Today the elites head to the Innisbrook Resort at Palm Harbor, FL for the Valspar Championship.

Artist's Slice -

Starting next Thursday, we’d like to present to you a different take on art from the mind of a golf course!

LPGA Tour -

23 year old Canadian Brooke Henderson shot a show stopping 67 in the final round of the Hugel-Air Premia L.A. Open at the historic Willshire CC to rally past 3rd round leader, American Jessica Korda.  The Ontario native was one of a very few golfers playing any golf as courses are shut down in her home territory for another month due to COVID!  Today marks the start of the 4 day HSBC Women's World Championship at Sentosa GC in Singapore.  ESPN will telecast daily from 11 PM - 3 AM.

DEEP Thoughts

The Massachusetts Manufactured Housing Association located in Halifax has decided to hold a tournament for all owners and clients here at Waubeeka.  It’s nice to know that organizations from eastern Massachusetts recognize that the western part of the state has much to offer, including our fabulous course, our wonderful location, and the many amenities the Berkshires has to offer.  Great choice!
