FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Do not let your COVID guard down. Ottawa Premier Douglas Ford closed every golf course in his province as of last Saturday when he issued a stay-at-home order north of the border!  Here, let’s wear our masks, wash our hands frequently, keep 6 ft. away from each other, get vaccinated and follow the CDC guidelines.

Did you know Waubeeka Golf Links has 3 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations?  Why not come down, charge your car, play a round of golf, have lunch or dinner in our outdoor dining area and, when you're done, your car is fully charged and ready for takeoff!

Happy 80th Birthday Kenny Hodgdon!  Anita supplied the cake and Kenny darn near shot below his age again on Patriots Day!!

Did you know every MassGolfer who has a GHIN card is eligible to receive the MassGolfer Magazine at no charge?  Send an email to sderderian@massgolf.org and start your subscription today.

Congratulations to our Club Champion, Jamie Gaffey on being named the North Atlantic District Sales Engineer of the Year for Walter USA.  Just listen to Jamie talk about the golf swing and you will know why he is an excellent engineer and a great person!

Don Dagnoli sent us this video of Duncan Robinson!!  He’ll be at TD Garden, Sunday afternoon May 9. Watch here!

Congratulations to our golf professional Erik Tiele on being named to the Board of Directors for the NENY PGA section.  His knowledge and enthusiasm for the game will be a big benefit to that organization.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Bunker rakes have been placed in the bunkers; please use them. Last Friday we received half an inch of rain and snow, and as a result, on Saturday morning greens 8, 9 and 15 could not be mowed due to moisture. This is why the older greens need to be updated to USGA specifications and will allow for consistency in our greens. When you see Keenan Pallos thank him for his hard work along the 4th and 5th fairway.

We finished aerating all the greens yesterday and sand filled them with our new sweep & fill machine.  You shouldn’t be able to tell we aerated in a week!

UMASS turf specialists inform us that the dreaded annual bluegrass weevil activity on golf courses this spring compared to the 2020 season is on the rise.  We are monitoring and are trying to keep any damage from these insects to a bare minimum.

FROM THE KITCHEN -

The annual Members Appreciation Party, cancelled last year due to COVID, will take place on Saturday evening, May 8 from 5:30 PM until 9:30 PM.  The exclusive event will serve complimentary appetizers prepared by Chef David and assistant Chef Jeff.  Cash bar.  As an added treat, The Yale Whiffenpoofs, America’s oldest Collegiate A Cappella Group, who have played for Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush will play exclusively for the members and spouses from 6 to 7 PM.  The members will mingle with members from 7 - 8 PM.  Please RSVP in the clubhouse by May 1st.

This is the sign under the tree in our outside dining area...a very talented artist obviously found the perfect palette!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The President’s Cup and the First Lady’s trophy will begin qualifying on May 10 through May 16.  All matches are match play net and must be played within 2 weeks of the start date.  Separate sheets for men and ladies are inside the pro shop.

All members are eligible to play in the Men’s and Women’s Allied. Their full schedule is posted in the pro shop.  Men must register for the Two Ball Championship to be played on May 8 at Berkshire Hills CC before April 29. It’s great to see all of our members and guests enjoying the course!  As you all know, I try to carry many of the current names in golf products and once in a while a new or obscure company.  If there is something that you may be interested in, please let me know.  I will try my best to get it for you. Also remember that I carry many demo clubs to try out on the course, so check them out!

Reminding you all that we have a Demo Day on Saturday May 15th!  A great chance to try out some great products!!!  Need new irons, how about Titleist?  Looking for a new driver?  How about the Cobra line? Wedges?  Cleveland is among the best when it comes to the short game!  And golf balls.... see what a difference using the correct type of ball can make at our Bridgestone ball fitting!  Tomorrow we also have a demo day; however, at this time it is full.

Buy 3 dozen golf balls, get 1 dozen free ends soon. If you are still interested ...hurry and get your order in!  A great ball personalization promo being offered by the ball manufacturers.

Physician Endorsed ladies’ hats..same as you see on Facebook, are available in the pro shop!

This week's format for the Sunday sweeps was delete a par 3, 4 and 5. Honors were claimed by Todd Shafer (62) in the gross portion and a tie between Jake Jowett and Peter Landry (57) in the net portion. Second and third were claimed by Jim Crews (63) and Jamie Gaffey (64) in the gross and tied for 3rd in the net was Fred Scully and Ron Goss.

Do you know of anyone that might be looking for a few hours of work this season?  I am looking for somebody that would be interested in working about 10-15 hours a week in the golf shop.  Give me a call at 413-458-8355.

“WOW”beeka Weekend is sold out!  Last year's Covid pandemic put this event on a delayed start and we held an impromptu “Wow”Beeka Tournament last fall for 16 teams.  What a difference a year can make!  As of Thursday April 15th, we have filled the field with 50 teams! We are now taking teams to be placed on the alternates list. We have a great weekend planned for all!

New members - There is a welcome packet behind my desk.  If you have not received one yet, please ask and I will give it to you. Glad you’re here!

PGA Tour -

Stewart Cink loves Hilton Head!  $1,278,000 worth of love for the 47 year old. And it couldn’t have been better….he had his son Reagan as his caddie! Newbee Will Zalatoris made $25,000 for a 6 way tie for 42nd place! The long hitters are in New Orleans today for the Zurich Classic.  Today and Saturday they are playing fourball (better ball, same as the “WOW”beeka Weekend”), while Friday and Sunday they are playing alternate shot that can rattle your nerves!  Watch out for the team of Collin Morikawa and Mathew Wolff, who are a good bet at 14 - 1!

Champions Tour -

How many snowbirds have played Tiburon in Naples, FL?  Steve Stricker used to live in Naples, so he came back and picked up $240,000 (compare that to the PGA Tour winner purse of $1,278,000) and the Chubb Classic title! And if I’m correct, our good friend, Trevor Gliwski was a pro at Tiburon!

LPGA Tour -

Lydian KO loves the Lotte Championship and the $300,000 (compare that to what Stewart Cink made) first place payoff!  She hadn’t won in 1,084 days, but last Saturday she won by a whopping 7 shots! Today marks day 2 of the Hugel-Air Premia LA Open at Wilshire CC.  American Jessica Korda has a one shot lead.  Golf channel is televising from 6:15 - 9 PM tonight, Friday & Sat!

DEEP Thoughts

With everything that is happening in our world today, it is nice to know we have our golf course... a place of peace, solitude and understanding.  Our wish to all  members and friends is joy, good health, and the comfort of friendship.  This year will be better.
