FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

I can’t ever remember having any better opening days than what we experienced over the weekend….perfect weather in the 70’s, the course in the best shape, and seeing so many of our members and friends!  If this is any indication of the future, we should have a phenomenal year!  And, even though the weather may not be favorable for golf the next couple of days, with the warm temps we’ve had, I’m sure if the snow falls, it won’t be here for long.

Happy Birthday to Anita Hodgdon… her birthday was yesterday and we wish her the very best year.  Anita has also agreed to sub for our first Spring Cup match, April 29.  Thanks, Anita!

On behalf of the entire Waubeeka team, I would like to invite all veterans to play Waubeeka this Monday, April 19th, Patriots Day.  There will be no charge for golf or cart, play 9 or 18, and we will have a terrific meal for you when your round is done.   Please call the pro shop, 413 458 8355 to reserve a tee time.  Thank you for serving our great country!

Oklahoma is considering a bill to issue a license to hunt ‘Bigfoot’ or ‘Sasquatch’.  Doesn’t Oklahoma know ‘Bigfoot’ has been cited in Williamstown, MA?

Our Art Division has been doing well;  we’ve secured some lovely pieces from some well known artists.  All pieces are for sale; check with me and I am able to provide information on the artist and let you contact them before making a purchase!  More pieces arriving next week!

Thank you for the compliments on our renovated Ladies’ Fairway Cove.  We have many new pieces of apparel.  Some of our new brands are Tee-to-Sea, Sunice, Nivo, and Weather Apparel, along with the usual favorites, Footjoy, Callaway and Kate Lord.  I believe we have the largest collection of women’s apparel of any golf course in western MA!

MIKEY MEMBERSHIP - Available to those who have never joined before, good only for one season, twenty 9-hole-rounds or ten 18-hole-rounds or any combination thereof.  There will not be an initiation fee when purchasing a MIKEY MEMBERSHIP.  If you decide to join, (the purpose of us offering the MIKEY) you will have to pay an initiation fee in year 2.

Ladies’ Allied BEST BALL has been changed to Monday, June 28 from Tuesday, July 13 at Waubeeka.  The schedule will be hanging in the Women’s Restroom and Pro Shop.

A Note About the Masters….2018.  Williamstown native Dylan Dethier won a lottery held for the media the last Friday of the Masters, April 2018.  He was a winner and got to play the Sunday pins at Augusta on Monday.  Could he break 80 at Augusta with the tees 1000 yards shorter than Dustin Johnson played them in 2020?  Great read here!

Andy Blau was honored as the Volunteer of the Year for Mass Golf (MGA) many years ago.  For those of you who remember the great store, England Brothers on North Street, Andrew was the manager!

Waubeeka still remains the location for the highest total population within a 175 mile radius.  (Great place to build a 120 room destination resort~all approved by the Town).  According to the latest census bureau released July 1, 2019,  we hope we can still say this next year, with the COVID exodus leaving big cities, we may lose that status next year.  The bright side is, people are leaving the cities and moving to rural areas, like Williamstown, MA!  Welcome!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Rollin, Rollin, Rollin, keep that machine Rollin ~~~Green #2 is looking really good!   Hoping to open for play BY THE END OF May!

Member question - this FALL, which green would you prefer to be redone #6, #9 or #15 ?  Flag me down or send me an email hudson206@hotmail.com.

Assistant Superintendent Keenan has spent most of this week rolling the fairways, approaches and greens.  What a huge difference it makes when the ground is soft!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

A great big ‘THANK YOU’ to Brian Uliasz and the Martignetti Companies for donating to us 3 new ‘Jack Daniels’ umbrellas.  Great for keeping our outdoor diners in the shade!!

Any person bringing alcohol to Waubeeka will not be allowed to play and you will not be given a refund.  We sell alcohol in our Tavern.

Bring your family!  We were heartened this week when we saw a couple of members who play golf in the morning and asked their families to join them for lunch after their round.  That is what a membership to a club means.  Not only are you a member, but having your family meet you after a round for lunch, to hit balls and to interact with your friends is what it’s all about.  Make it a habit!!  We welcome you!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

I had the opportunity to play our course yesterday and have never seen the course looking this good this early in the season. When you see Brian and the staff out there give them a wave and thank them.  Outstanding work out there!

PGA Junior League sign ups and registration is now open to all junior golfers. We will be offering a 13 and under team.  Even if you aren’t a member you may sign up to play on our team.  If you know of a youngster, have them call me or check out the PGA Jr. League on our website!  We do have a scholarship program for those who may need one.

I have two sets of used Ping Irons for sale in the pro shop. One set of Ping Zings and a set of Ping Eyes.  Take them up to the range and try them.  I can give you a great price!! There is a new set of grips on each set.

Club Trade-in Program  Buy a new set of clubs from us either April 23 or May 15 and we will give you credit towards your new purchase.  Don’t forget Demo Day, May 15 when many club reps will be here. Take advantage of a great opportunity.

Once again, I am carrying the Pinned Rangefinders and the newest models came in yesterday. Check them out!

The new Taylormade Sim 2 along with the Titleist clubs have arrived, and Callaway started to arrive on Tuesday. Looking for that new Driver for 300+ yard drives or the putter that never misses, well then, you better come in and see Square Deal Tiele and see what catches your fancy!

Let’s see what we can comment on this week:

A few takes from the Masters which I watched in earnest. It is quite a production by CBS but very predictable.

* If a golfer makes a couple of bogies he enters the CBS Witness Protection Program, never to be seen again. If his family is watching at home they may figure he was abducted by aliens.  Did Brian Harman get hit by a bus on Sunday morning?

* It appears that Jordan Spieth is the new flavor of the month. The cameras would cut to him while he talked to his caddy,  surveyed "the putting surface" or commented on his shot while they could have been following the other action.

* I suggest the PGA adapt a new rule.  Once you place your ball on the putting surface it must stay there and be putted. These guys who now realign their putts a few times before pulling the trigger is annoying and slows down play.

* When there is action on the course why are we welcomed into Butler Cabin to be told about what to expect during play on the course throughout the afternoon? How about simply letting us watch?

* As usual the CBS announcers never mentioned the amount of purse money that was being lost down the stretch by players who were leaking oil. That is not allowed. They are not playing for money, but only to win a green jacket.

* I wonder if Dustin Johnson, who missed the cut, did not return to place the green jacket on Hidecki Matsuyama at the conclusion, if he would ever be invited back. I sincerely doubt it.

* I don't speak Japanese but I thought I heard Matsuyama tell his caddy, " The heck with the jacket, when do I get the $2 million?

* Midway through the final round Jim Nantz told us that the final pairing was "on the clock".  At that point Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele did not appear to pick up the pace, but we never heard anything else on the subject.

* Sir Nick Faldo referred to the pine straw as pine needles and immediately was called into Fred Ridley's office.

* If you looked quick you would have spotted Nantz removing his shoes before entering Butler Cabin. He surely wants to be invited back next year.

Is it just me or is Major League Baseball getting more difficult to watch?

This past weekend the Tampa Bay Rays elected to put a shift on left-handed-hitting Jay Bruce of the Yankees. They had four outfielders and stationed all 3 infielders to the right of second base. The entire left side of the infield was vacated. Bruce grounded out to second.

Do the Yankees have a hitting coach?

Billy Martin is rolling over in his grave.

Memo to MLB play-by-play guys, please stop with the "There is one out in the inning".

You can say there is one out in the 4th inning or 7th inning but not just in the inning.

There is no other place that there can be outs but in an inning. Please stop!

Wow has the UMASS hockey program come a long way. They won the Frozen Four title.  I watched a bit of the 5-0 clincher over St Cloud. The announcer stated that the team did not have any players on the roster that were from the Bay State. Their on line roster lists 4 Mass natives including a goalkeeper from Ludlow who played for Pope Francis (formerly Cathedral HS).

Let's hope for some nice weather and I hope to see many "patrons" on the links very soon .

PGA Tour - THE MASTERS

Hideki Matsuyami (draws the same crowds as Elvis Presley or Tiger Woods did) made over $1 Billion in Japanese endorsements for his Masters win!!  Dustin Johnson didn’t make the cut, but he hung around the weekend to put the Green Jacket on the shoulders of Japan’s national hero!!  Two Japanese winner’s in two weeks at Augusta National as 17 year old Tsubasa Kajitani won the ANWA 8 days ago.  How about second place finisher Will Zalatoris, ($1,242.000 paycheck) the rookie to watch in 2021.  He’s 22 starts off the Korn Ferry Tour, with 10 top 10 finishes!!  Better than his look alike, Happy Gilmore’s caddy!

What’s in Hideki Matsuyami’s bag?
  • Driver - Srixon ZX5, 9.5degree, graphite shaft
  • Fairway Wood - TaylorMade Sim2 Titanium, 15 degree
  • Irons: TaylorMade SIM UDI (3), Srixon Z-Forged (4-PW), with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts
  • Wedges: Cleveland RTX 4 (52, 56, 60 degrees), with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts
  • Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport w/Lamkin grip
  • Ball: Srixon Z-Star XV
  • Grips: Iomic (full wing)
Today marks the beginning of the RBC Heritage at HarbourTown in Hilton Head, S.C.  Watch out for the home town boy, Kevin Kisner!

LPGA Tour -

The Lotte Championship began yesterday at Ko Olina GC, Kapolei, Hawaii.  American Ally McDonald shot a 7 under to open and is one shot out of the lead!

DEEP Thoughts

For those of you who aren’t yet members of a golf course, come play Waubeeka to see why Golf Magazine voted us the best conditioned course for the money in Massachusetts.   I truly believe you will realize our low membership fee is well worth it.  And while you are at it…..we believe in DYNAMIC PRICING.  If our tee sheet has available openings, we very often lower the price.  Feel like playing?  You just may find a very attractive deal by checking our website
