Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates.

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

BREAKING NEWS - GolfWeek Magazine has selected Waubeeka Golf Links to host the 2021 New England Junior Championship.  It is estimated that there should be a significant boost to Williamstown tourism.  Showcased will be the very best male and female golfers from all of the 6 New England states and New York.  More details to follow soon.

With the election over, let’s all hail America’s Chief Golfer, Woodrow Wilson!  Wilson was ordered by his doctor to take up the game at age 56.  No president has played more golf while in office than President Wilson!  If it's good advice for a President, what about you for 2021?

We are still looking for that special person to create a robust display of artwork at Waubeeka.  Have an idea?  Would love something bronze, metal, steel, concrete or a combination of!

No Par 3 Tournament this year at The Masters starting a week from tomorrow on November 12th.   96 players will tee off on 1 and 10 in a morning and afternoon wave, until the cut is made Friday night!  Running out of daylight in Augusta!  First time ever a Masters in November!  CBS will televise the final round live from 10 AM Sunday until the finish, calculated to be 3 PM!

If 4 new members join before January, you only have to pay for 3!  For golfers under 40 years old, you can join for $1,050 if 4 new members sign up together.  And, there will not be any initiation fee!  Credit cards won’t be accepted for this deal.  Call PGA Professional Erik Tiele today, 458-8355.  Members wishing to pay before 1/1/21 may deduct $50 off renewal rates and those who played in the 2 day men’s member guest may deduct an additional $50 off.

Lady Members - Waubeeka is looking for members to join the team representing our course in the Massachusetts Fall Cup matches. We will play 5 matches in 5 weeks, some home, some away; meet new friends and see different golf courses!!  We couldn’t do this in 2020,  but next year - let’s go!  Call Vicki, 458-8355.

Watch here this brief interview with New Member Nicolette McGovern.

Next Wednesday, we would like to invite all veterans to play golf with us; take a cart, eat and enjoy yourself, NO CHARGE. Make a tee time online or call Erik, 458-8355.  Thank you for your service!

Clemson, the 2019 National Champions in football, have stopped accepting students into their PGA Golf Management Program?  We sent an email to Clemson and got a response that the program is being cut due to covid and low enrollment!  Hard to comprehend with golf on the upswing!

Don Rea was elected Secretary of the PGA of America last Thursday.  Rea, though he lives in Arizona and is the owner of Augusta Ranch GC, has plenty of ties to this area, and we wish him the very best.  Rea is married to Karen and has 2 children, Don III and Katie.  Jim Richerson was elected the 42nd president for 2 years, replacing Suzy Whaley, who now serves as honorary president.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians opened an office at 84 Spring Street in Williamstown, according to Heather Bruegl, Director of Cultural Affairs.  They occupied Waubeeka Golf Links in the 1700’s.  See what they say on Willinet here.

Last Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and yesterday we were either closed or delayed by frost!  Where have all the golfers gone?  Good weather now for a bit! Let’s take advantage….it’s not time to put away those clubs just yet!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Our second green has become a weather nightmare, but our work is progressing steadily and quite nicely!!  The 2 new sand bunkers have had liners installed and the shape and depth are daunting! The boss is not too happy as we rented an earth moving machine, but we saved plenty of time with this beast; it hauls 9 tons and leaves less ruts than a tractor!!  Drainage has been covered with ¾ inch pea stone above the liner and the process of installing sand has begun.  Weather looks great for the next few days, which makes our crew happy!

Taking advantage of the upcoming weather and since our tournament schedule is over, we will begin aerating the older greens tomorrow with small tines!  Free hot dog or $5 credit in the restaurant for all until the end of the season--on me and Erik!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Congratulations Nico & Ellie on your beautiful wedding day.  Thank you for allowing us to be your host.  We are humbled and so very happy for you!!  The best from all of us to you!!

ASK LARY OF LENOX IF HE REMEMBERS THE MAGIC WORD YOU WOULD SAY AT NORTH ADAMS COUNTRY CLUB THAT WOULD MAKE YOUR GOLF BALL COME BACK OUT OF THE WOODS.

ANS.”KAWA” (FOR STEVE KAWA WHOSE BALL ALWAYS CAME BACK OUT)

Larry answered, “Yes and I will still yell Kawa if the situation arises. Why not, it worked for Steve.”

Let's talk about aces, aka hole in one (or is it holes in one?)  Talking to people over the years there are some unique tales.  Let’s hear from our brothers from Forest Park CC in Adams. Bruce Cardin, retired director of golf recalled "Babe Shaw had 5 aces on our 3rd hole, his last one was at age 81.”  Set ‘em up, Geritol and tonics for everyone!  Cardin continued, "Paul Roy won a $20,000 car by acing our 3rd hole also.  His tee shot hit the road, bounced off a mogul next to the green and rolled in.” Our very good friend Jeff Polucci related a story to me of one of his 8 aces a few years ago.  "I was involved in an intense match and knocked it in on #5 at Taconic.  I got in the cart with my opponent and he looked at me and said, "Press.”  I expected him to at least say “Nice shot.”  Jim Mitus, PGA of Skyline had an interesting tale a few years ago.  "I've played a lot of golf and I have never had one.  Our bartender Stacy Morrissey recently defied all logic.  Playing her first round of golf ever, on the 6th hole of her career she aced #15 up here.  She hasn't played since.”

Jack Nicklaus had to wait until 2015 to record his first ace on the Augusta National Par 3 Course.  Do you remember 2018 when Tony Finau aced #7 on the Par 3 Course and during his celebration, rolled his ankle?  Former Taconic member and long time teacher at Mt Greylock Fran Cardillo brought back memories. He played left handed and made four aces. He must have gotten bored and switched to right handed and had a few more.  John Wells of Lenox who spent some time playing PGA tour events told me, "I had my first one when I was 12 years old on #7 at Greenock and I have had 5 total.  He added "Joe Piretti had 13 at Cranwell when I was there, and he didn't start playing until he was 50.”  John Dawley told me that his dad "Bud" had 15; Jim Pease was also in double figures and John himself has had two.  So there is hope for us all; patience is a virtue.

* In the tragic news department; what a shame to lose George Ferris, 82, to an automobile accident this week.  A hard working man who was always a good listen while I was getting a razor cut back in the day.  My condolences to his family.  A true gentleman; he will be missed by the entire city of North Adams.

* Sorry NY Jet fans, you lost to KC last weekend. The line was 19 points and no they did not cover.

* I feel obligated to release a few horses to keep an eye on this weekend in the Breeders Cup from Keeneland.  The two day event runs Friday and Saturday.  Keep in mind that I am a big time horse racing fan but also realize that my last winner was Truman.  Here we go:

Friday in the BC Juvenile,  Jackie's Warrior from the Steve Asmussen barn should be the public choice.  Friday, Juvenile Turf set to go off at 3:10, is the best race to bet on either day.  Lowest morning line odds are 5-1. If you like any horse in the race, you will get a good price.  I'm leaning toward Gretzky The Great @ 8-1.  Saturday, Filly/Mare Sprint, IF Serengeti Empress gets out of the gate first,  the race is over.  She will not be caught.  It will look like one of the old Northampton Fair "Boat Races".  Gamine, trained by Bob Baffert will take most of the action so there could be some value there.  The nightcap on Saturday, the $4 million Classic is too tough to call.  I believe there are 6 horses that can win; it is simply too much of a crap shoot.  If I bet the race, I will look for value.  Tom's d'Etat at 6 to 1 or better could be my flyer.  My attitude toward the weekend races is to get even..........or even worse!!  Good luck.

Remember if you decide to take any advice from me and things don't work out there is an old saying in the race game "If you are going to be a sucker, don't be a noisy one.”

PGA Tour

48 year old Bryan Gay birdied 9 of his last 14 holes, including the first playoff hole at Port Royal GC to win the Bermuda Championship.  Spectators were rooting for him in a field loaded with competitors closer to his daughter’s age than his age!  Today, it's on to the Tom Doak redesigned muni - Memorial Park in Houston, for the Houston Open, which always precedes the Masters.  Notables in the field include DJ, whom we haven’t seen in a couple of months and Brooks Koepka, who helped Doak do the redesign!

DEEP Thoughts

Hope you haven’t put away your clubs yet!  Waubeeka will remain open until Mother Nature says it’s time to close! No sense rushing into anything!
