Attention All Runners:  The 6th annual Freedom Virtual Road Race is this Saturday.  The Jim Foley Foundation is an inspiring website.  While a journalist in service to his country, he was captured and killed by the Islamic State in 2014.   Run or walk a couple miles for Jim and send the foundation a check!  Click here to make a donation. Let’s talk about our $2,000 initiation fee.  We want golfers to join; the response has been great.  However, the overwhelming objection to joining has been, we need a little more time.  Waubeeka needs more money to continue to operate in the manner you have become accustomed to.  We’ve decided to extend the time period where you can join without paying a $2,000 initiation fee to December 31 2020!   Those who have joined by paying $300 and avoiding the initiation fee, have benefited by playing some tremendous golf these past few weeks.  But…..December 31st will be the absolute deadline to join without an added $2000.  If you intend to join for next year…..NOW IS THE TIME!  Play the remaining weeks with your deposit.  Over 30 new members have joined and we welcome them to the Waubeeka family!


The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Heat for the NBA Championship, but the stock of Duncan Robinson jumped out of sight!!  For your enjoyment, here’s a little clip about Duncan in the finals game 5, where he had 26 points, 7 three’s and 6 boards

Let’s all celebrate what a great year this has been for the game of golf!!   We’ve seen new faces, old faces, young faces, male faces, female faces, smiling faces, family faces all enjoying a game that in USGA Executive Director Mike Davis’ words “It’s the game of a lifetime, so you can be a little kid to days away from kicking the bucket, so to speak, and you can play golf.”

Have you noticed some of the cart paths begging for some reclaimed blacktop?

New drainage on the 9th green will begin one week from today. We will also be improving the bunker on that hole at the same time.  This will be a huge improvement to the overall condition of the green and make the bunker more playable while giving the green/bunker area a much better definition from the fairway and approach shot.

The Glowball Tournament slated for tomorrow night has been canceled due to the predicted forecast of cold and showers. We will approach the idea again next season for a midsummer date!! 

Fall Mixed Scotch Tournament to be played this coming Sunday, October 18th.  Noon shotgun start!! We need one more team to even the field.  Call now, 458-8355.  Soup on the turn and a great Chicken Francais dinner to top off what looks like a great day to be golfing!

Sunday, Oct. 25, we are holding our famous Par 3 Tournament.  $100 to the first hole in one!! All the holes will be played as par threes ranging in distance from 90 yards to 200 yards!! Entry fee.. members $20, non-members $100.  Ask me about the details!!

The Sunday Sweeps format for this week was to throw out your worst hole!! Al Stalker took home the gross win with his 70. Ron Goss claimed second, Dan Bourdon, third and Todd Shafer placed fourth. The net portion was won by Bob Williams with his 60, Roger Prevey placed second while Jim Corkins, Tom Degray and Fred Scully all tied for third.

Rules Question of the Week

Chuck’s ball on the 12th hole was played from the fairway area by the 100 yard marker, across the pond marked which is marked as a yellow penalty area, and lies in the bunker behind the putting green. Chuck makes a stroke from the bunker and the ball comes to rest in the penalty area in front of the putting green. What is the ruling? 

A. Chuck may drop a ball in the bunker under penalty of stroke and distance.

B.  Chuck may drop a ball within two club-lengths of where the ball last         crossed the edge of the penalty area, not nearer the hole.

C.  Chuck must drop a ball on the fairway side of the water, taking relief under the yellow penalty area relief Rule (17.1d).

Correct answer:

A. The player may drop a ball in the bunker under penalty of stroke and distance.  ExplanationRule 17.1d(1)

I would be remiss if I didn't pay tribute to PGA professional Tom Sullivan of Wyantenuck CC on his tragic passing last week. He was a friend for years and a great guy.  I heard from many people who went way back with Tom; Paul Quinn of Longmeadow CC: " So sad, I have known Sully since the late 70s when he was at Quaboag CC. First class professional."
John Demko of Crumpin Fox: " A tragic loss, a class act and true gentleman. Still to this day he was one of my true friends in the golf business." John Wells PGA of Lenox:  "Awful news, Sully and I go back at least 40 years. What a great man, one of the best." Randy Koldys, Monument Mt. hoop coach:  "A true gem of a friend and golf professional."

There is a Go Fund Me drive in progress to help Tom's widow Kathy and their two college age  children. The response has been great and hopefully will continue to grow.

You have heard  the expression that someone would "give you the shirt off their back." Well, Tom Sullivan took that one step further with me..
I reported to Wyantenuck CC to marshall a Western Mass High School championship. It was typical Berkshire County fall weather so I donned my flannel lined Carhartts to survive the 5 hour day in the elements.
Sully would have none of that outfit on his course so he provided me with his FootJoy rain pants for the day.  A professional all the way.

To continue my carbon footprint saga, as promised, in North Adams.

Lets see:

• My school, the  North Adams State College Mohawks became the MCLA Trailblazers
• I lived above Gagliardi's Appliance Store, that became a McDonalds
• I lived above the original Nassif's Pharmacy, urban renewal got me there
• I lived above Scully's Cafe, that place burned down
• I bartended at Unis' Grill, Champs Place and Scullys, all gone
• First job out of college at Green Mountain Race Track, shuttered in 1993 and recently was gutted by fire.
• 
• The first Country Club that I joined and played for years (NA Country Club ) is presently a solar farm.
• Project Success, an alternative school where I taught for 3 years, was a victim of budget cuts by the city.

I lived in North Adams for 15 years, loved the area, made many great friends, but I'm not sure if I could verify my existence there.

Last week I turned on a MLB playoff game in the 7th inning. I remember it was the 7th because the play by play guy told me the inning 16 times during a half inning, where no runs were scored. Yes, it was former NESN veteran Don Orsillo back to irritate me again.

While I'm at it, why does every baseball play by play guy have to tell us that "there is one out in the inning?” "That is the second out of the inning" etc etc.

I don't understand why they have to add "in the inning".  Where else can there be outs?

I guess the lead off hitter could make the first out "of the game" but that is it!

PGA Tour

After 72 holes of fierce competition in Sin City, Martin Laird, Austin Cook and Matthew Wolff needed two extra holes to decide who would win the Shriners Hospital for Children Open at TPC Summerlin.  Laird ended all doubt with a birdie on the 2nd playoff hole. The Tour will remain in Las Vegas as today marks the start of the CJ Cup at iconic Tom Fazio designed Shadow Creek!  Defending champ Justin Thomas will be present, absent will be 2020 POY Dustin Johnson who has tested positive for COVID!  First time the PGA has allowed live betting odds on all 4 rounds at BetMGM!  Maybe 18 year old Tom Kim is worth a $5 wager!

Sei Young Kim bested Inbee Park by 5 shots to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Aronimink Square, Philadelphia, PA.

DEEP Thoughts 

Howard Herman wrote this week that 4 local golf teams were happy to have the opportunity to play golf!  Our entire staff is not only happy that these fine young men can play golf, but we are encouraged by the many new faces we see enjoying the great outdoors!  Coach Mitch Spoooner of Mt. Greylock said it best, “Let’s all follow the rules, keep our safe distance and not ruin this opportunity for others.”  Amen!
