It's A Beautiful Day at Waubeeka - OUR THURSDAY NEWSLETTER

Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates.

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

The Waubeeka family wishes to express our sincere condolences to Tom Sullivan’s wife, Cathy, his children, Sarah and Ryan,  and all the members of Wyantenuck Country Club. Tom was not only a fellow pro, golfer, mentor and inspiration, he was our friend.  He leaves a legacy in both golf and his wonderful family.  We were saddened by this tragedy, but rest assured, Sully will never be forgotten.

I would like to personally thank all our members who rejoined this year not knowing what may become of the golf season….we, too, didn’t foresee what was to happen…. But, we are happy to announce that 2020 was our best season ever…. We made a commitment and so did the members who joined. In spite of the pandemic and losing a couple of months of golf enjoyment, this year has definitely been our best season ever!  The accolades we received this year show that our members made the right decision to join….Waubeeka has never been better!

Very proud of being voted one of the 8 best golf course deals in the Northeast by Golf.com!  When you are in the same category as Bethpage, that is a tremendous honor! Link here

Good News.  Yale Golf Club, one of the top college courses in the country, has reopened.  After shutting down this summer for what many believed forever, due to COVID and the fact that Dartmouth, Brown and others canceled golf as a college sport, the outcome appeared awful.  BUT, the powers that be, the AD and many alum, made their voices heard, and last week, Yale opened for the last 6 weeks of the golf season!!  What started as a very bad year for golf, has morphed into one of golf’s best ever seasons!  Let’s hope Brown, Dartmouth and the other colleges will follow, reinstate this game and give away those scholarships to fine young students and golfers!

Let’s talk about our $2,000 initiation fee.  We want golfers to join; the response has been great;  however, the overwhelming objection to joining has been, we need a little more time.  Waubeeka needs more money to continue to operate in the manner you have become accustomed to.  We’ve decided to extend the time period where you can join without paying a $2,000 initiation fee to January 2, 2021!   Those who have joined by paying $300 and avoiding the initiation fee, have benefited by playing some tremendous golf these past few weeks.  But…..Jan 2nd will be the absolute deadline to join without an added $2000.  If you intend to join for next year…..NOW IS THE TIME!  Play the remaining weeks with your deposit.  Over 30 new members have joined and we welcome them to the Waubeeka family!

Watch out for the raccoons at the White House and at Waubeeka!

Fall Mixed Scotch Tournament to be played next Sunday, October 18th.  We still have availability.  Mail in this entry today! Click here.

Congratulations to the teams of Will Kannegieser and Sam Goldenring of Williams College fame as they and Nick Maccario (56) and Mike Calef qualified at Berkshire Hills CC for a trip to the USGA Four-Ball Championship at Chambers Bay, Washington next May.

The Los Angeles Lakers hold a 3 games to 1 lead over Duncan Robinson and the Miami Heat.  Game 5 will be tomorrow night at 9 PM.  Duffy Judge sent this great article about Duncan’s rise from Williams College to the NBA Championship game.  GO DUNCAN!

Scott Stafford of the Berkshire Eagle reports that neighbor Brian Fairbank of Jiminy Peak has been named to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.  Well deserved honor for this hard working and dedicated visionary.  His work has lifted Jiminy Peak to be recognized as one of the Northeast’s best mountains!

This year our secondary toilets between 9 green and 10 tee have had so much use that we were forced to close them yesterday.  Thanks to A1 Septic for getting them back in order by 9:30 this morning!  If you  need septic service, we recommend them highly!

It seems as though I have been putting Al Stalker’s name into this newsletter quite frequently so why should I stop now?  Well, Al added another Hole In One to his list!!! His 5th “ACE” came on Hole #14 yesterday. He was playing with his buddy Chuck Lewitt when the feat happened!!!  He used a 7 hybrid to knock it in!!! Great Job!!  My question is … what’s next for Mr. Stalker on his 2020 achievement list?  Oh, Chuck bought Al a drink - local rule at Waubeeka!!

With only 4 weeks remaining the Fantasy Golf held steady this week Some small fluctuations in the field but the top 4 all held on to their positions.  1st - Ken Sann, 2nd - Ron Goss, 3rd - Chuck Lewitt and 4th - Andy Vidal.

PRO SHOP CREDITS EXPIRE Sunday, Nov. 1.  Exception, those who played in the Ladies Fall Classic, The “Wow” Beeka Bestball, the Mixed Scotch and the Par Three Tournament!  We will carry over the winnings from those 4 events into next year's earnings!!  Redeem your credits now.  Use em or lose em!

Rules Question of the Week

In stroke play, a player takes his or her stance in a bunker to play the ball lying in a bunker. The player changes his or her mind regarding club selection, leaves the bunker and returns with a different club. Before making the stroke, the player rakes the bunker where he or she first took his or her stance because he or she wants to make a different type of stroke with a firmer stance. What is the ruling?

A.There is no penalty.

B.There is a one-stroke penalty.

C.The player gets the general penalty.

Rules Answer
The player gets the general penalty. (2 strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play) ExplanationRule 12.2b(2); Rule 8.1a(4)

The NENY Section Tour Championship Champions Cup concluded yesterday at Wyantenuck CC. Fellow Berkshire County Professional, Eric Mabee of CC of Pittsfield was the winner, his assistant, Thomas Sennett tied for 3rd. Congratulations to them both!! This was the first tournament without Doug Evans and now without Tom Sullivan. The NENY section has suffered two untimely tragic losses.

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

I feel real bad for the high school golf teams that are not competing for various reasons. Mt Greylock is one of the fortunate schools that are making it work.  Nice win by the Mounties defeating Lee HS.  I would like to see an open tourney put together for all high school players to end the fall season. Maybe someone could step up and make it  happen.

A conversation at the Syriac household last week after I came home  from a day of golf.  I entered the house and lowered my face covering so Jonah the German Shepherd would recognize me and allow me access.

"How was golf?”

"Not bad.”

"Did you eat?”

"Yes.”

"What did you have?”

I looked down at my mask and answered, "Looks like meatloaf with gravy and some corn.”

The Berkshire County Senior Series will have 3 events in the books by press time. Another reminder that the purpose of these events is to give financial aid to college bound golfers. We need to remember to give when the donation bucket is on display at the Wednesday shotguns.  We thank you for your support.

To continue on my carbon footprint saga, let’s begin in 1959:

  • My first job was at a greenhouse; it is now a storage facility.
  • The paper that I delivered, The Shopping News, is like the Civil War, history.
  • My grammar school, Our Lady of The Sacred Heart (OLSH) is now a public school.
  • Our old skating pond where we played many hours of hockey is now the Eastfield Mall.
  • Memorial Golf Course where my dad and I would play until dark is now an Industrial Park.
  • Off to high school to become a Cathedral Purple Panther. After a tornado destroyed the school it was rebuilt to become Pope Francis Academy and the Cardinals.

Next week the saga continues when I matriculated to North Adams.

PGA Tour

40 year old Spaniard Sergio Garcia rallied from 6 shots back on the final nine to defeat the likeable Peter Malnati in the Sanderson Farms Championship by a single shot.  Malnati had his only PGA Tour Victory at this same venue 5 years ago, but had to watch nearly two hours to see if his low round of the day 63 was going to be enough to capture his 2nd Sanderson Farm and PGA Tour victory.  Sergio made a clutch Eagle on the par 5 14th to tie the match and then hit a perfect 8 iron from 171 yards to 30 inches for the close- your-eyes birdie! Purse $6,600,000, $1.188 to Sergio and $719,400 to Peter Malnati.  Oh what a difference a putt makes!  This week, the pros head to Sin City for 2 weeks to visit TPC Sumerlin in Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospital for Children Open this week.  Golf has not particularly been the sport to gamble on, but Vegas is betting on a HUGE increase in golf gaming for the next 2 weeks!  DJ and Rory are 10 -1, Tiger is 20 -1!  Tony Finau tested positive for COVID, so withdrew to quarantine away from the Strip.

LPGA Tour

”I love Champagne”  said Canadian Mel Reid after she finished 19 under par to capture the Shoprite Classic presented by Acer.  Americans Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest, Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champ) and Jennifer Song were so close, yet so far!  Today marks the start of another major, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Aronimink Square, Philadelphia, PA.  Hello Sophia Popov!!

DEEP Thoughts

Working on something special for next year to bring enjoyment to both our members and guests…...nothing I can reveal now….but this is SPECIAL. A SECRET TO BE LATER REVEALED! AND NO…..ALTHOUGH I WISH….IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A HOTEL…..
