It's A Beautiful Day at Waubeeka - OUR THURSDAY NEWSLETTER

Read this week’s newsletter containing all our course updates.

Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

One of my most favorite golf stories ever!  I saw Nancy Barry here last week, she’s back living in NA and it brought back a special memory.   I remember her running down from the tee on old Hole #1 to fairway #9 to save a man’s life about 30 years ago.  This man had collapsed and his teammates not knowing what to do, thought he had passed and put a handkerchief over his face.  His son was playing in the foursome behind him and, needless to say, was distraught.  Nancy, a former phys ed teacher and obviously very knowledgeable in CPR brought him back to life. She told me a few years back that she receives a Christmas card from him every year.   I get goosebumps just recalling this.   Nancy has always been a star golfer…..consider her a heroine, too.  Thanks, Nancy!  Now, readers, do you know where our AED machine is?

Tonight is the first NFL’s first football game.  Wishing Jake Benzinger the very best of luck. Certainly, some NFL teams could use a fine, strong, intelligent man like Jake.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

The grass is just starting to sprout on fairway number 1; nobody likes soft, everybody wants firm and fast and green!  We are finishing up aeration of all tees and approaches this week.  We are starting to make a list of improvements for next season.

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

Congratulations to Al Stalker, our new President’s Cup Champion.  Al, a former club champ at the old NACC, was in a back and forth battle with Tom Downey; but in the end, Al stalker just brought his ‘A’ game and defeated his long time playing partner.  Stalker has come alive and this past Sunday shot a 73 gross to clean up the sweeps pool, also!!!  Stalker joins our First Lady Champion Kay Goldstein.

We had one of our greatest moments last Sunday.  It was our final Junior Clinic for 2020, and we decided that after lunch we would have a golf ball hunt in the Green River in front of the 7th green. For some unknown reason, there seemed to be an excess amount of balls that needed to be retrieved that day. The hunt was on, and in spite of the extremely warm weather, the water felt great and everyone loved it.  Most of the kids decided to keep their treasure, even after Mike offered them his usual rate of 7 cents a ball.  I’d say they are pretty smart kids!  They braved the heat and went right in and found a ton of balls!!  Our future is in good hands!

Fitting day.  Titleist, TaylorMade and Callaway.  We need 4 appointments to schedule a fitting date and time.  The company reps will review with you lie angle, launch angle, shaft options, club length and swing weight. These reps are trained to create a set of clubs that are perfectly matched to your swing!  Why not optimize your performance?  If you have been considering a new set of clubs, ladies and men have different points of emphasis, let me know.  Callaway has a new line, REVA, designed for women.  Why not take advantage of this opportunity?  Interested, contact me, 458-8355; I will set a date and time for your private fitting and help you prepare for it.

Sunday Sweeps this week was pick your partner in the Tour Championship. Al Stalker/Dustin Johnson took home the gross win, followed by Russ Gilman/Justin Thomas and third went to Joe Vanuni/John Rahm.Net was claimed by Al Lorge/John Rahm, second went to Jake Jowett/Justin Thomas and rounding out third was Bill Molloy/Rory McIlroy.

Sign ups are now out for the Junior Club Championship and the Cart Barn championships this weekend. The Senior Club Championship still has some openings so get registered for September 17 & 18.  Junior Club entry fee $0.  Senior Club entry $10.

Fantasy Golf Standings continue to fluctuate.  We are through with the FedEx Cup but there are still some events left on the schedule. The pool will continue until November 1st with the HSBC World Golf Championship.

I came up with a great idea to get out and play with you the members!!!  Play with the Pro Day!! Out by the scoreboard you’ll see the sign up sheet for the different days that are still available!! You and two others or sign up as a single!! Your choice of 9 or 18!!! No excuses...sign up today!!

I enjoyed a great round of golf yesterday with a couple of my favorite members, Anita Hodgdon, Linda Lewitt.  We were then lucky enough to have Jan Carroll join us for the back nine!! Thankfully, I made a couple of birdies to beat them scratch.  Net, on the other hand, was not so good.  A fun time, for sure!

I also want to thank Jim Lipa, Glen Murray and Dave Wood for playing last Friday!!! I never had to worry about a flood because these guys were filling the “SANDBAGS”!!!  Before we even teed off I was two down!!! Thanks fellas for a great day on the course!!

This Saturday, I will be playing with member Tom Degray at 10:40 AM.  We are looking for 2 other members to round out our 4some.  Either sign up outside the pro shop or call me 458-8355, first member come, first member in!

Teaching Moment

Feel free to question me anytime, ask about your swing, or make a suggestion.  Private Lessons - Available by appointment, $60 for 45 minutes of instruction; 5 lessons gets one additional lesson at no charge!  458-8355 for appointments.

Rules Question of the Week

With all of the rain that we received last week I know that many of our bunkers did have water in them. Here are your options!!

Q.The bunker is filled with water – what are my options?

A.When the bunker is filled with temporary water, you may play your ball as it lies or take free relief in the bunker. When taking free relief, you must find the nearest point of complete relief in the bunker and drop within the one club-length relief area (see Rule 16.1c(1)). If complete relief is not available, you may take free maximum available relief in the bunker and drop within the one club-length relief area from the point of maximum available relief (see Rule 16.1c(1)). Additionally, for one penalty stroke you may drop a ball outside the bunker by going back-on-the-line as far as you’d like keeping the point where your ball lies in the temporary water between you and the hole (see Rule 16.1c(2)).

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

When you have been in the company of many PGA professionals over the years and have given instruction to guys like John Daly, Matt Kuchar and Greg Norman, you have played D-I golf at Coastal Carolina against many guys who now play on tour and you have spent most of your life in the golf business, what else is there?  If you ask North Adams native Trevor Gliwski it was a recent round of golf at Michael Jordan’s The Grove XXIII in Hobe Sound, FL, THAT was his ultimate thrill and experience.

He was invited to play the course by his cousin and his former  college roommate Tom Gillis who plays on the Senior Tour. "Should I bring a fourth?” Trevor asked and Gillis said that he had already taken care of that.  After his 2 1/2 hour ride he found himself in the parking lot at the club.  He was met at his car by a staff member who asked him what brand of golf ball he plays.  When Trevor reached the range he was given a bag of practice balls identical to the balls that he plays. I guess for a $250,000.00 membership tag, you should receive some perks.

He was soon to learn of the gentleman who was to complete their foursome, PGA stud, Rickie Fowler.  "What a great guy, we had a blast. Until you actually play with a touring player you can't appreciate just how good they are. I'm not long but I can get it out there pretty good but he was 80 yards by me on every drive. We had a great match and my partner (Gillis)  made a 2 on a par 5 to limit the damage . Gillis and Fowler combined to shoot a 5 under on one hole. When Gillis made his albatross, Rickie made a ‘pick it up, it’s good, eagle.’  We ended up losing $10.00 bucks on the day".  What a great experience for a young golfer who was honored by his hometown of North Adams after winning the Mass AM at Longmeadow CC in 1992.

Mayor John Barrett III declared it "Trevor Gliwski Day" and gave him the key to the city.  Trevor's dad, Dan, can be found at Waubeeka always working on his game and I would love to tee it up with him this fall. He will not have to worry about me making any eagles or better.

Your scribe was in a foursome at Waubeeka last Sunday which included Mike Deep and Tom DeGray of the local club. Great weather, decent golf and a chance to take in the majestic views of an outstanding layout.  PGA professional Erik Tiele encouraged Mr. Deep to join us, I believe, simply to get him out of the pro shop.  I noticed that Mike still has some game, as they call it in the horse racing business, he has some "back class".  If we held up the 3 ladies behind us it was because Mike picks up all broken tees on every tee box. This is quite a change for a guy who used to litter all tee boxes with his logo tees in years past.  Nice day, great lunch and it was great to see a lot of familiar faces.  On Hole 17, Mr Deep instructed our 4th, Matt Cyr of Lee, that it was OK for him to hit his second shot to the green.

Matt hit his best shot of the day, a 4 iron, to the center of the green. Unfortunately the group in front of us were still on the green putting out.  That led to apologies and a round of drinks on the owner.

The "Big Dig" of Lenox is complete, much to the dismay of the local police and sheriffs, no more profitable details.  After months of flashing lights and warning signs, the tunnel from the pro shop and practice range to the first tee has been completed at the Wyndhurst Manor & Golf Club (formerly Cranwell Resort) and is open for transport.  Exiting the tunnel, golfers will be directed to the first tee, which was previously the 8th hole, behind the Mansion. I was recently asked by a guest after I pointed out that the 1st tee was behind the mansion, "Thank you and can you tell us what the mansion looks like?”  Well, I guess it looks like a, ah, I guess a mansion.
                                   *****************************
Ok all you baseball experts out there.  Mike Trout just hit #300 to set the career home run record for the LA Angels.  Can you name the player he passed who had 299?  If you said Albert Pujols , go to a  neutral corner.  The correct answer is Tim Salmon.

                                      ***********************

I was asked on Sunday afternoon how I did on Kentucky Derby day, why people want to know my business, I don't know.

"How did you make out yesterday?”

"Do you want the good news or bad news?”

"Bad news.”

"I lost a week's pay.”

What is the good news?”

"I only work two days a week.”

PGA Tour

Dustin Johnson, certainly his year, a hall of fame performance over the past month and the coronation last Labor Day at the Coca-Cola Tour Championship!!  It all started right here in MA and it was a 4 week run to remember for the ages; In front of a gallery of 0!!  More news (or history):

Tour Champion - Dustin Johnson

FedExCup Title - Dustin Johnson

Player of the Year - Dustin Johnson?

Arnold Palmer Rookie of the Year - Scottie Scheffler or Victor Hovland?
OK!  That year/season is over.  Let’s begin the 2020-2021 season today.  Most are headed to Napa, CA for the Chevron Safeway Open, a good tune up for the new season’s first major the following week, the U.S. Open!!  The favorite at Safeway---none other than Phil Mickelson!!  Sergio, Jordan Speith, Shane Lowry and Matt Kuchar will be in the 144 man field.

LPGA Tour

Today also marks the beginning of the 49th consecutive ANA Inspiration Tournament in Rancho Mirage, CA at the Dinah Shore Tournament course of Mission Hills CC, a mere 500 miles south of Napa, where the boys are!!   In 1972, Dinah Shore gave a huge boost to women’s golf when she called on friends, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope to play in the inaugural Pro-Am Tournament!!  They immediately lined the fairways with tens of thousands of spectators.  Don’t think there will be that many this year!!  Looking for big names that are playing, how about 8 of the top 10 Rolex ranked players in the world, including #2 Danielle Kang, #3 Nelly Korda, #4 Sung Hyun Park, #5 Mingee Lee, #8 Inbee Park, and #9 Brooke Henderson.  Temperatures expected 115 degrees!!  No wonder the winner plans to jump in Poppie’s Pond on Sunday (NBCTV)!  Where is the darling Sophia Popov?

DEEP Thoughts

I had a blast last Sunday, got to play 18 holes with aging friends Tom DeGray, Dick Syriac and new young acquaintance Matt Cyr.  Matt is a proud member of our military and I was honored to be in his company.  Dick and I  played the forward tees and had the potential to reach all the par 4’s in 2!!  So much more fun to be putting for birdies than for par!!  To the rest of my aging friends -- just try to TEE IT FORWARD one time and have even more fun!!  Also, thank a service member next time you meet him/her!
