It’s the year of the cougar..ahh Kreuger, I mean.  Cheryl Kreuger won the Club Championship at Taconic two weeks ago,  and on Tuesday, National Women’s Golf Day, captured the prestigious Curtis Bowl with partner Barb Hecimovich by 5 strokes at The Cape Club of Sharon!!  Same as the Krugerrand,  her putter was like gold, as she also has captured the Ladies’ Club Championship at her home course, the Orchards in Hadley, MA!  Cheryl and her teammates are playing at Waubeeka in this year’s Fall Classic and will be looking to continue that winning streak.

Join Waubeeka NOW!  Best opportunity ever offered.  $300 to play for the rest of 2020 AND this $300 will be credited toward your 2021 membership AND avoid any initiation fee!  The 2021 Membership rates and fees can be found here!  Any current member who brings in a new member will be entered in a drawing for the PINNED rangefinder!  Sign it out for a free demo.

Anyone interested in a 8 week Mixed League, open to men and women or mixed teams on Friday afternoons, 9 holes, $26, beginning the first Friday after Labor Day, Sept. 11, ending October 23?  Tee times begin after 3 PM.  If you’re interested in playing, just click here and send in your form.  We will not start this league without a minimum of 20 golfers!

As Waubeeka continues to monitor the rapidly-changing COVID-19 situation, providing timely information to our members and guests, it is more important than ever that we have your contact information.  For the sake of safety and social distancing, more and more functionality is moving online.  In order for us to offer greater self-service capabilities, it is key for us to get up-to-date email addresses and phone numbers for all so that we can notify you of a COVID related issue, perhaps return a lost item, or keep you informed of special opportunities at the club.

Thank you to all the members who took the time to say ‘thanks’ for the free cart in August.  It’s nice to know you appreciate us as much as we appreciate you!  If you didn’t get your free cart, tell the Pro; he’ll make it right with you.

Dr. Bob Winters, (renowned golf psychologist, known to many of us at Waubeeka, he’s the lead instructor at our Nike Golf Camp ((hope they come back next year)), was a guest on “Golf Talk America”.  Listen to the doctor HERE.

Duncan Robinson, Jimmy Butler and the underdog Miami Heat took a commanding 2 games to none lead over Giannis Antetkounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks last night in front of zero fans. Game 3 is Friday night at 6:30.

Are you looking on our website for Hot Deals?  I just saw at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon, there is a slot available for $55 for 4 golfers, including cart!!  Quick, go to our website now and grab it!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

We are currently venting our greens using our slice machine.  This is a seamless systematic process whereby we push 60 three inch knives in the ground which allows for gas exchange, relieves surface compaction and improves infiltration.  Slicing has little effect on play and is performed a minimum of twice annually.  Actually, the more we slice, the more the turf benefits!!  Surface compaction can easily be seen on a soccer field, where the goalie and every player spend all their time compacting the soil the entire game, similar to walking on the greens all day!  Our crew will try to aerify (quite different than slicing) some tees this week, if weather permits!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

Perfect weather for outside banquets for up to 50 people!!  Special apps this week include Zucchini Frites, Mozzarella Sticks, Pork Pot Stickers and Nacho Chips!!  This is Family Meals month; bring your entire family and enjoy our delicious food and terrific views!!  Cal 458-6000 and let us know you’re coming!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

We had a fantastic turnout to celebrate Women’s Golf Day!! It was great to see many new faces along with many old friends come out and enjoy the perfect weather and conditions on the course.  #WGDUnites or @WomensGolfDay.  We celebrated better than any other course as our friend Stacy Govi had a hole-in-one on the 14th hole!  Stacy used her pitching wedge on the 14th hole! Witnesses were Don Dagnoli and Mike Deep!

This Labor Day weekend, tee times start at 7 AM, Saturday, Sunday and Monday! Huge Labor Day Sale.  We want you to join AND avoid the $2,000 initiation fee which will begin with all new applications after Sept. 30.  Buy anything in the pro shop, pay $100 extra for it, and that will be your deposit on a 2021 membership!!  The $100 deposit will guarantee you avoidance of the initiation fee!!

We have contacted some of our club manufacturers to set up a fitting day.  Titleist, TaylorMade and Callaway are offering discounts for fitting appointments, up to 20% off their clubs!  We need 4 appointments to schedule a fitting date and time.  The company reps will review with you lie angle, launch angle, shaft options, club length and swing weight. These reps are trained to create a set of clubs that are perfectly matched to your swing!  Why not optimize your performance?  If you have been considering a new set of clubs, ladies and men have different points of emphasis, let me know.  Callaway has a new line, REVA, designed for women.  Why not take advantage of this opportunity?  Contact me, 458-8355; I will set a date and time for your private fitting and help you prepare for it.

This week's Sunday Sweeps was no par 3’s on the front nine and no par 5’s on the back nine. First Gross went to Geoff Tatro, second third and fourth went to Todd Shafer, Chris Bourdon and Chuck Lewitt. The Net portion saw Al Lorge take home first while Gary Urkevich and Jack Pieraccini tied for second and Jake Jowett claimed fourth.

Sign ups are now out for the Junior Club Championship, Sept. 12 and 13 and the Senior Club Championship on September 17 & 18.

The last Chip and Sip of the season was held this past Monday. It was a great session of lessons for the ladies and the weather was ideal every evening. Now they are course bound over the next few Monday evenings!! Thank you again,  ladies!!

Rules Question of the Week

Question: In the rain, a player holds an umbrella over his or her head with one hand while holing a short putt with his or her putter held in the other hand; there is no penalty.

A) True

B) False

See the answer at the end of this section.

What a finish in this past week’s BMW Fed Ex cup Event!! Two huge putts; one to force a playoff from 43 feet and one to end it on the first playoff hole from 66 feet!!

The Fantasy Golf standing saw some big moves!! It will continue to be interesting with a couple of Majors still to be played in this strange new schedule. Andy Vidal leapt into first place thanks to Jon Rahm’s finish, Ken Sann remained in second, Ron Goss fell into third and Chuck Lewitt moved up to fourth.

Teaching Moment

Feel free to question me anytime, ask about your swing, or make a suggestion.  Private Lessons - Available by appointment, $60 for 45 minutes of instruction; 5 lessons gets one additional lesson at no charge!  458-8355 for appointments. Join me on YouTube for a quick putting lesson using the Barrel Drill, click here to watch it!

One of the real good guys!!  You won’t find a better ambassador for the game of golf than 91 year old Bobby Ahlen!  Bobby is a legend in Berkshire County, winning a bevy of tournaments throughout his career.  We were privileged last Friday to have Bobby play here at Waubeeka and he was up to it again firing a round better than his age ~~~75, sixteen shots better!!  Thanks, Bobby, for visiting us!!

Rules Question Answer
A. True is the correct answer
Explanation: The player is allowed to hold the umbrella himself or herself. It would be a penalty if the player's caddie or any other person held the umbrella over the player's head while the player made a stroke. See Rule 10.2b(5)

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

The Waubeeka Newsletter has quite a circulation around New England. Readers from Springfield and East Longmeadow have responded to some recent articles.  Now, after our feature on good friend Pop Dean, we hear from Carl Cellana of New Hampshire and Dick DeGray of Vermont.  Carl recalled a trip to NYC with Pop and Mary Ellen to Yankee Stadium for an Old Timers game. After the game they were in a nice small Italian restaurant when a big black limo pulled up. "Billy Martin got out of the limo, talked to the host and went back to the car and got his travel companion to join him in the restaurant.  It was Mickey Mantle and the two came in to eat. The former Yanks were nice enough to sign the menu for us and my son Kurt still has it.”  DeGray, whose brother Tom has been a long time member at Waubeeka, added  “Pop was a great guy, he would always greet all visitors at  NACC with a smile  and was a popular bartender at the club.”  Chuck Lewitt and Ed Morandi also shared fond memories.

Out of State News

The membership list  at Waubeeka features many former NACC members and others from theTunnel City. These folks grew up reading the North Adams Transcript (sold at Tony Deep's store on Ashland Street) which often featured stories on natives of the city and their kids and grandkids who may have moved away.  Sort of a "Where are they now" section.  Late Sports editor Tom McShane would always be looking for these kinds of scoops.

Maren Petropulos has retired as the girls lacrosse coach at Souhegan HS in Hollis, New Hampshire. Coach Petropulos played her college lacrosse at Hamilton in New York. Maren compiled a 332-98 record in her 25 years behind the whistle. She won 3 State Titles and sent many of her troops to D-1 and D-3 schools with many getting scholarships. Her daughter, Tyler, played four years at Harvard where she was all league and captain for two years. Tyler has worked for the Red Sox Foundation after graduating in 2012.  Maren is the wife of David Petropulos who had an outstanding hoop career at Drury despite being coached by your scribe and Jim Freeney and a fine golf career despite being coached by his dad, King George. Their son D.J. graduated from Amherst College where he played four years at quarterback.  Oh, I almost forgot,  they are all related to "Beek" members Nick and Owen Petropulos.

It is Fall~~~That can only mean it is time for the Berkshire County Senior Series to begin and continue to provide help to county junior golfers going on to college.  Here is the 2020 schedule:

Weds Sept 23 Berkshire Hills ....two man scramble        12:30 shotgun

Weds Sept 30 Greenock CC ....singles                            12:30 shotgun

Weds Oct 7 Cranwell Golf Resort....two man scramble    12:00 shotgun

Weds Oct 14 Wahconah CC   .......two man scramble     12:00 shotgun

Weds  Oct 21 Waubeeka Golf Links two man scramble  12:00 shotgun

The good news is if you are 70 years old and carry a handicap above nine you move up to the forward tees.  These events are great for seeing old friends, playing some nice venues and helping junior golf in Berkshire County.  You guys know the drill, but if you forgot, because you are getting along in years, this may help. Call Bill Gates (413) 464-3184 or Paul Traversa at (413) 822-5613.

A reminder to all prospective seniors who are interested in participating.. bring your golf clubs, turn on hearing aides, be sure to go to the right golf course and enter your home address on your GPS after arriving at the club.  See you there.

PGA Tour

‘You drive for show, you putt for dough!’  Ask DJ first, then ask Jon Rahm.  DJ sank a 43 foot putt to send the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields into a playoff with Rahm!  Now, it seems certain that DJ will win his second FedEx playoff in a row, especially since Rahm suffered a one shot penalty for forgetting to mark his ball on the green 13 holes earlier!!  So, on the first playoff hole with Johnson awaiting his coronation, from downtown, Rahm sinks a 66 foot putt for the win and $1.71 million dollar payday!!  Tomorrow, the final 30 will tee it up in Atlanta, GA for the season ending Coca-Cola Tour Championship and the crowning of the FedEx Champion~ all at the home course of Bobby Jones!!  Here is how they start before they hit their first shot:

DJ minus 10, Jon Rahm minus 8, Justin Thomas 7 under and the rest of the field even par.  The winner in Atlanta and the FedEx champ could very well be 2 different golfers!  The Tour Championship winner cashes $ chump change (comparably) while the FedEd winner cashes a $15 million bonus!!   Who won’t be there: Tiger, Phil, Sergio, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Speith, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, Martin Kaymer, Jason Dufner and local favorites Keegan Bradley and Richy Werenski!!!

LPGA Tour

American Austin Ernst shot a Sunday best 63 for her first win since 2014, 144 starts ago.  The Walmart NW Arkansas Champion entered the final round 4 shots back and finished two shots ahead of Anna Nordqvist!  Off week for the ladies this week.

DEEP Thoughts

This is Family Meals month, the idea being to eat with the family.  Why not join Waubeeka now, a family membership, and eat with the family 2 or 3 or 4 times a week?  What is that worth?  Memories, what are those worth?  Bringing the family to the range, hitting balls, laughing, enjoying, coaching, helping - what is that worth?  All this and not having to pay the $2000 initiation fee!!  What is that worth?  Do the math…..
