Good Morning Nate,

FROM THE GM - Vicki Richardello

Many entries are arriving every day for this year’s Women’s Fall Classic. With so few tournaments being played due to Covid restrictions, this turnout will undoubtedly be oversubscribed. Space is limited!   I will email your tee times on Tuesday morning, Sept 15. Don’t forget, this is a 4 Person Best Ball tournament...2 low gross/2 low net; every partner is eligible to use her score for both gross and net!!  Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Last Sunday, Nick Maccario, playing at Bradford CC in Haverhill, MA shot a 56!!!  Not a bad score for 18 holes, considering the world record is 55!!!!

Duncan Robinson and the Miami Heat swept the Indiana Pacers 4 straight in the bubble last Monday evening!!  They are waiting to play the winner of the Orlando Magic/Milwaukee Bucks series, which Milwaukee and Giannis Antetokounmpo lead 3 games to 1.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - Brian Bartlett

Thank you to repeat Club Champion Jamie Gaffey, who suggested we move the fountain on Hole #9 to Hole #6.  Terrific idea, it will be more appreciated as that pond is almost crystal clear!  We are currently backfilling the ditch Hole#6 and installing pipe from Rickert Electric, so it will be running as soon as David completes the hookups!!  Can’t wait.  Thank God for the little rain we did get, trying to manage our mowing schedule to keep the turf as healthy as we can!!  The first fairway looks a lot better, still not satisfied, but with TLC and water, we should see the fairway we’ve become accustomed to playing!

FROM THE KITCHEN -

This weekend, Friday or Saturday night, order your Rib Eye steak dinner or stuffed Chicken Breast.  We have two small parties booked this weekend, so take advantage of dining with us, either inside in our air-conditioned Tavern on 7 or in the rear of the Tavern and witness our bucolic views while dining al fresco, in the fresh air!

FROM THE PRO - Erik Tiele

The Club Championship was a great success this year and Jamie Gaffey (74-81-79=234) successfully defended his title with a two shot victory in the Championship Flight. Chris Bourdon (80-79-77=236) placed second and Todd Shafer (80-88-80=247) claimed third. In the Men’s First Flight Joe Vanuni claimed his first title firing a 237 total (83-77-77). Russ Gilman was the runner up with his 245 total (81-79-85) and Dan Bourdon and Jim Crews claimed a tie for third. In the Net portion, Jack Pieraccini had rounds of 72-71-70-213 which gave him the title of Net Champion.  Jake Jowett was second at 215 and Chris Ware was in third at 220.

Congratulations to our new Women’s Club Champion!!  Judy Willette claimed her first title by firing two great rounds of 80-81-161.  Kay Goldstein was second. Sandy Bourdon won the net portion of the women’s Championship with her two rounds of 71-74-145.  Linda Lewitt and Julie Arnold tied for second net.

The two lucky winners of the Bob Dascani Memorial Raffle were Anita Hodgdon and Jim Crews!! Thanks again, Nancy, for the generous donation in Bob’s memory!!!

Rules Question of the Week

Here is a link to a topic that came up during the club championship this weekend. Taking relief from a cart path. Rather than being long winded and explaining the rule I thought that I would share the address to a video that gives you an explanation and shows you the correct procedure.

Fantasy Golf should see some significant moves in the next few weeks as the Fed Ex Cup begins its run to the final events. Big Purses = Big Swings in the standings.

Teaching Moment

Feel free to question me anytime, ask about your swing, or make a suggestion.  Private Lessons - Available by appointment, $60 for 45 minutes of instruction; 5 lessons gets one additional lesson at no charge!  458-8355 for appointments. Watch this video for a quick putting tip!

Dick Syriac (laryoflenox) writes:

A major loss in the "Good Guy" department with the recent passing of Ron "Pop" Dean of North Adams.  I met Pop in 1965, my first year in town, and he never changed in all the years that followed. He had the ever present greeting and smile.  He was a fixture at North Adams CC where he fine tuned his golf game for years.  I have no idea why he was called Pop; I often referred to him by a name to commemorate an accomplishment that he achieved at Worthington CC during an open singles event.  All the PGA touring pros that break 60 are referred to as Mr. 59. Jim Furyk, who shot one better at The Travelers, is Mr. 58.  Pop brought his "A" game up to Worthington and he must have also had a healthy GHIN card in his wallet.  When they tallied up the score cards Pop was awarded the low net prize with an unbelievable 43 NET.  After that event he stopped taking his game on the road. (His picture was on every bulletin board in every pro shop in Berkshire County) Just kidding, after posting a 43 net what else was there to shoot for?  So "Mr. 43" is gone and will be missed by everyone who knew him.  There will never be another Ron "Pop" Dean and I doubt if anyone will ever shoot a 43 net, ever, (and get off the property with both legs working).  He left a great family and many loyal friends behind who will now have a serious void in their lives.  Too bad there is not a club house at NACC to honor his great score with a plaque.  Anyone can win a club championship or a member guest, but a 43 net is a first in the history of golf.  Time to play some 4-3 exactas during the remaining days at Saratoga in his memory.

                                             **************

Chuck Lewitt correctly named the duo who took a lightning hit at NACC as Mike "Jocko" Koperniak and brother-in-law Larry Taft.  Next time Chuck dines at the Waubeeka outdoor lounge he will receive extra ketchup for his fries. Thanks to all who sent in guesses.  The name "Porky" Oliver was submitted but he is the answer to another trivia question regarding NACC.  I was told that he was the only person to clear the pond from the tee on # 9 (or 18) in the early years of the club.  Chad Alibozek could probably do that now with a 4 iron.

                                            *****************

The Ct. Valley is still very much in need of some rain. I was at Edgewood CC in Southwick and Oak Ridge in Feeding Hills this week and there is more brown grass than green. Both courses were well populated with customers, which is the good news.  More bad news, Mrs Murphy's doughnut shop in Southwick has been closed for a few months and its future is in doubt. This fine breakfast venue has been around for decades and once featured the tallest waitress who ever took my order. That would be Rebecca Lobo of UCONN, WNBA and ESPN fame.

PGA Tour

Dustin Johnson (he likes NE golf, he also won the Travelers in Hartford) showed everyone who is the World’s #1, the FedEx Cup Leader and the Northern Trust Champion with a convincing, 11 stroke victory and 30 under par performance at TPC Boston, Norton, MA.  It’s been 10 years since any tournament was won by more strokes on the PGA Tour!!  Today, the top 70 players, including Richy Werenski, Bubba, Rory & Tiger, are at the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Chicago, where these ultimate Drivers will be on display!  Next week, the final 30 will head  to Atlanta, GA for the season ending Tour Championship in Atlanta, GA.

Phil made his Champions (over 50 years old) Tour debut Monday.  He missed the Northern Trust cut on Friday, as a result, got bounced from the FedEx playoffs.  So, Phil decided to play and win at Ozarks National GC, Missouri, Monday to avoid a long layoff before the Safeway and the new season’s first major,  the US Open at Winged Foot, Sept. 17!!  He is one of 20 to win in their first appearance in a Champions Tour event!

LPGA Tour

Who is Sophia Popov?  Three weeks ago she was a caddy on the LPGA circuit!  Sunday, she won the season’s first major, the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Troon GC.  Sophia shot 11 under par for a 2 shot victory over Jasmine Suwannapun with Minjee Lee 4 shots from the winner's circle!  Tomorrow marks the start of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at the Pinnacle CC in Rogers!

DEEP Thoughts

As this year’s golf season continues, many have asked, “How is Waubeeka doing?”  The answer...it is no surprise that due to the pandemic, March and April were slow, almost non-existent.  But since then, with our friendly staff, daily specials, dynamic pricing, tasty tavern menu, and the fact that golf is the safest sport to play right now, Waubeeka has seen more outside play than ever before!  We expect this fall to be a truly remarkable season and hope to see you out on the course.  Now is an ideal time to join and enjoy this sport for a lifetime!!  Remember, it’s always  ‘A BEAUTIFUL DAY AT WAUBEEKA’, ESPECIALLY IN THE AUTUMN!
